NERD_ALERT··on America is back in the factory business
Wages definitely are pennies on the dollar. However factors like international shipping, taxes/tariffs, quality control and lead times cost more time and money compared to domestic. So in the end it’s probably closer to 1/2 the monetary cost.
NERD_ALERT··on Twitter's Recommendation Algorithm
We don't need to speculate on this. It sounds like he did actually fire engineers over his tweets getting less engagement than he wanted.

NERD_ALERT··on Show HN: ChatLLaMA – A ChatGPT style chatbot for Facebook's LLaMA
Hmm I'm not sure here. I asked "Who are you?" and first I got this response.

LLaMa didn’t return anything, please try another prompt. It
  responds best to questions.
Then when I asked again I got the same response as the parent comment, word for word.

I am a 25-year-old woman from the United States. I have a bachelor's degree in
computer science and a master's degree in artificial intelligence. I am
currently working as a software engineer at a tech company.
NERD_ALERT··on Reasons Not to Use Google (2015)
Stallman isn't interested in practical/useful technology. I doubt the guy who has a panic attack at the thought of his browser executing javascript without his permission and uses an email client to download raw HTML has a good alternative to suggest. His main concern is shaming technology that isn't free and open source.

NERD_ALERT··on A Bank of One's Own
Mixing commercial and investment banking was banned in 1933 by the Glass Steagall Act. The act was partially repealed in 1999 which allowed banks to engage in both commercial and investment banking again. As far as I know banks have been able to engage in both since then.

NERD_ALERT··on AI to name your Java Classes
I’ve personally enjoyed using Immutables even more than Lombok. It produces generated java classes instead of a JAR when you build so it’s easy to view.

NERD_ALERT··on Vimium – A browser extension that provides Vim-style keyboard controls
I'm not trying to come off as aggressive. It's that I don't understand what more than 15 tabs could realistically be used for. I don't think I could find a use for more than 15 tabs if I tried at any given time. At work as an engineer I usually have a tab with Bitbucket, at most 3-4 tabs for pages/documentation I'm reading, a tab with Jira. Maybe I have a tab or two on Youtube to put something on in the background. So as I'm reading comments about people claiming to have > 1000 tabs, I can't comprehend what's going on in that situation. The only way that could happen is if I simply never closed tabs when I was done with the task I was looking at it for. It would never make sense to not close it if I don't need it because after 15+ tabs being open it becomes too hard for me to find anything because the tabs are so small. I'm incentivized to close tabs when I don't need the information anymore because the browser becomes unusable quickly. I know how to get back to just about anything I was looking at and if it's important enough that I'm revisiting it often it gets bookmarked.

It's less aggression and more disbelief/shock because I don't understand how it would be possible to use a browser with more than 15 tabs open.

NERD_ALERT··on Vimium – A browser extension that provides Vim-style keyboard controls
I don’t understand what’s so complicated about this. I’ve also never allowed myself to have more than 5-6 tabs at a time because it just seemed reasonable. I’m not sure what I could possibly be doing that requires more tabs. I have an organized bookmark folder structure for things I absolutely need to get back to/visit regularly. I’m using my browser for no more than a couple streams of thought at any given time.
NERD_ALERT··on Young adults and mental health: Is more childhood independence the answer?
The burden of proof is on the people making these claims that entire cities/cultures are overrun with SJWs screaming about pronouns. If what they claim is true, it’d be pretty unlikely that my personal experience is what it is.
NERD_ALERT··on Young adults and mental health: Is more childhood independence the answer?
Have you ever been outside? I’ve lived in “woke left” cities for years and worked with a lot of “woke left” individuals. Never in my life have I seen someone get angry about pronouns or call someone out for using the wrong pronouns. It’s a fantasy invented to pit the working class against eachother.
NERD_ALERT··on Young adults and mental health: Is more childhood independence the answer?
I tried reading the twitter files and it seems to be all smoke and mirrors. Twitter has a clear rule about not sharing hacked information, which this falls under. Besides that point, there’s not even really proof this laptop exists. The evidence is mostly claims fabricated by the New York Post. Hunter Biden probably had his iCloud hacked instead of dropping off a sensitive laptop at some random repair shop where the laptop was intercepted by someone close to Tucker Carlson and then magically stolen in transit to Fox HQ.

All of this aside, since when is it a crime for a company to hire someone close to a politically powerful person as a consultant. How can you reasonably write laws against this or prove that this led to Ukraine having any political leverage with Biden. The DNC is also allowed to send requests to have nudes removed from Twitter. They didn’t command Twitter with a gun to their head. They requested just like Trump and friends regularly did for content they didn’t want which was respected as much as the requests by the DNC.

NERD_ALERT··on Young adults and mental health: Is more childhood independence the answer?
The political talking points are unfortunately not that sophisticated. It’s largely about how twitter is run by a cabal of SJWs silencing the freedom to post Hunter Biden’s dick pics or fantasies about the liberals who will throw a tantrum if you say their pronouns wrong.
NERD_ALERT··on Young adults and mental health: Is more childhood independence the answer?
> And they're also all in therapy too and super in touch with their feelings and emotions which is supposed to help, but is actually likely to be a large part of the problem.

Can you elaborate on how going to therapy is “a large part of the problem.”

NERD_ALERT··on Test scores are not irrelevant
So if a student who has to work 30 hours a week to support his family scores worse than a student who has no job and visits a tutor to study an SAT prep book outlining bizarre strategies about deciding when to not answer a question to score higher, that means the latter student should be preferred for college admissions?

NERD_ALERT··on Caltech's CS interview prep course
Computer Science is not Software Engineering. A PhD does not translate to real world engineering skills. If you just go through a bachelors CS curriculum, designed to give a survey of all topics in academic computer science, that wouldn't make you a competent engineer. This is especially true now that through the internet, just about anyone with a laptop can get as good as they want at software engineering without ever stepping foot in an academic institution. Sites like Free Code Camp, Kaggle etc. have torn down all of the barriers preventing anyone from learning how to be an incredible engineer. Some of the most important software in industry is open source and anyone can take the time to learn how to contribute to it.

If I had the choice between a Caltech grad who had all A's and no experience or a student from some random state school who had interned every summer and contributed to open source, I'd pick the latter. Many people are locked out from ever attending elite schools in the first place despite competence due to coming from poor backgrounds and underfunded highschool districts.
