NDizzle··on Walmart to close three tech hubs, tells tech staff to return to offices
Still happening I believe. Data scientist roles are around 260.
NDizzle··on Walmart to close three tech hubs, tells tech staff to return to offices
Where did you end up? I’m west of Centerton, out in the country. For non locals, I’m like 5 miles from Bentonville.
NDizzle··on Walmart to close three tech hubs, tells tech staff to return to offices
Median income in Bentonville is $83k. You might be surprised.
NDizzle··on Walmart to close three tech hubs, tells tech staff to return to offices
This area has a lot of options really. Tysons foods, JB Hunt, Simmons Foods, and of course you also have the companies that have a local presence to support Walmart.
NDizzle··on Walmart to close three tech hubs, tells tech staff to return to offices
They want people in Bentonville. The new headquarters is being built faster than anything of that size that I've ever seen being built. There's something like a dozen buildings going up at once. Maybe more, it's hard to keep track.
NDizzle··on Record levels of sadness in teen girls, CDC reports
It didn't have to be that way. I moved my family out of California in May 2020 to get away from the terrible decisions that were already happening. They were playing sports and doing normal stuff by June, 2020. Went to school in person that fall.

All of the data was there. It's been there the whole time.

NDizzle··on Mozilla removes Bypass Paywalls Clean extension from its add-ons repository
This means it's a good one. Checking it out, now. I love it when this kind of thing backfires.
NDizzle··on Why the conventional wisdom on how to grow muscles is wrong
Sorinex is who I went with.
NDizzle··on Tell HN: DEI initiatives undermine the self esteem of PoC within a company
~15 years ago, at a big 4 accounting firm...

One of the network engineers that I became work-friends with, as he was leaving the office at 2:15 on a Friday...

<Me> Man you always bail around this time, how do you get away with that? <Him> I'm a Mexican with a CCIE - what are they going to do, fire me?

NDizzle··on $90k to $900k: Pay transparency laws usher in baffling pay ranges
$90 to $900k is the 10x engineer, in hard copy.
NDizzle··on Folders with high file counts
Oh, we ran into this years ago. Using the RedGate libraries to compare SQL database structure (and data) generates temporary files in a folder.

A lot of weird shit starts happening once that folder hits about 10 million files.

NDizzle··on OpenAI starts testing ChatGPT premium
Ask it to talk about drag queen story hour and see what it has to say.
NDizzle··on I deleted all my social media 3 yrs ago and I hardcore regret it everyday
Social media, to me, is groups. Different groups that I associate with. There's family. There's close friends. There's youth sports, which I'm actively involved in. There's funny "I know what I have" groups, poking fun at people wanting way too much money for things.

It is what you make of it. If you make $16/hr and you follow people who post short videos from their yacht, you're gonna have a bad time. If you drive a 1991 Ford Taurus and you follow people who have $4M in vehicles, you're going to have a bad time. If you can't fucking stand your Aunt Suzy with her hot takes, yet you have her listed as a close relative, you're going to have a bad time.

If you coach youth sports and you follow a few local area to fringe area groups, you will find camps/clinics/tournaments, keep up to date in the goings on, and have a good time. If you enjoy working on cars and you follow a few groups related to tips and tricks in that genre, you'll have a good time. If you really want to get into gardening, but don't think you can do it yourself, you can find a local group that does stuff in various community gardens, which will give you a push (in either direction) to help your curiosity about gardening.

NDizzle··on Eggs are 60% more expensive than last year in the US
My wife is a professional baker.

She buys a 60 pack of eggs real regularly. It was $13 in November, it's $18 now. The same pack is $30 is California at the moment.

Check it out. Go to this link and change your zip code. See what happens to the price.

NDizzle··on Ask HN: Why it is hard for US to move to metric system?
What I mean is that it's calibrated for humans, at least dumb ones like me.

0F, it's cold and the wind chill makes it miserable. 0C? That's 32F, which is technically freezing but I can still work on my cars outside in that weather.

100F, sweaty, hot, chugging water if you're outside. 100C? GG, you're dead.

NDizzle··on Ask HN: Why it is hard for US to move to metric system?
F > C.
NDizzle··on Antidepressants are over-prescribed, but genuinely help some patients
Diet, lack of exercise.
NDizzle··on Ask HN: I'm 40 and feel my mental ability declining. Programming seems harder.
You're porting one functioning api from one language to another.

How high up there is this on your list of things that you would like to be doing today? I'm guessing it's not very high. It would be pretty low on my list.

Start fiddling with ChatGPT and get it to convert it for you.

You're bored, not brain dead.

NDizzle··on Old man yells at cloud
Dunno, I like my 200 series land cruiser. 2008!

I’m looking for a 1997-2000 LS400 at the moment.

NDizzle··on U.S. safety agency to consider ban on gas stoves amid health fears
Ahh yes, switch everyone to electric power when everything is going green and the rolling brown/blackouts are spreading across the nation and world.

No thanks, let's keep our gas.

NDizzle··on “The current climate in AI has so many parallels to 2021 Web3”
Maybe I slept through it, but what was Web3 in 2021?!
NDizzle··on Ask HN: What sub $200 product improved your 2022
Is there a single one of those aluminum-free deodorants that actually works? I've tried about 4 brands, and scent blocking lasts about 4-6 hours. Not good enough.

Good old white-colored old spice (I'm allergic to the blue colored ones) last about 30 hours.

NDizzle··on Ask HN: What sub $200 product improved your 2022
I finally got rid of my Samsung fridge, which had a bottom, open ice box. I too recall when we found the perfect scoop. They are actually hard to find. I believe this one was intended to be a candy scooper, at one of those do-it-yourself frozen yogurt places.

I can't recall the name of the store... It's a chain store that is overpriced "imported products" found next to an REI or some other middle/upper scale strip mall.

NDizzle··on Automatic1111's GitHub account suspended for "ToS violations" [restored]
Do inline links actually work in github's version of this? They don't in Azure Devops...
NDizzle··on Automatic1111's GitHub account suspended for "ToS violations" [restored]
Briefly? Still a thing.
NDizzle··on Automatic1111's GitHub account suspended for "ToS violations" [restored]
Ah yes, the extreme racist groups of… RimWorld players.

Ridiculous.

NDizzle··on CA high-speed rail is Exhibit A for how America can’t build big things anymore
That's entirely a California problem, not an America problem.
