N00bN00b··on Beware of a New Amazon Token Crypto Scam
I've been using it for well over 10 years now.

Sometimes I want to spend money on things that I think are morally right, but the credit card companies/paypal won't let me buy.

You can search for lists. I'm doing things that aren't even on most lists (things like buying medication - not drugs - at a discount). A good consumer will never be in that situation, they'll stick to the paths well traveled and stick to whatever laws they happen to think exist and apply to them (often without actually checking those laws or applying civil disobedience to laws they don't agree with).

An independent mind will sooner or later get into situations of wanting to do things that the established corporations don't want you to do and then you'll find out how little you can actually do with your corporate approved currency.

N00bN00b··on Dollar Tree says US$1.25 price point to become new standard
Yeah, that sounds cool and all, but somehow I ended up with a job that pays over $100K a year, that makes me work for about 3 hours a week from home and has been paying me for years to do that. And I'm pretty sure my manager knows that.

If I were to quit, I'd end up with another job that makes me work for 30+ hours a week, for the exact same salary. And that's just one example. I know many more like that.

Your supply and demand can't explain that, yet it is my daily reality in a capitalist society. Capitalism is just another lie we tell each other to make each other believe we live in a just world.

N00bN00b··on Steam Is Down
Check the front page of downdetector, there's a lot more that's down I think including origin, it all spikes up at the same time.

Either an backbone issues, AWS or something like that.

N00bN00b··on HashiCorp – S1
Just odd. Why would you change a definition in the middle of an existing chart... Just call it M1a or M11 and add a new chart.

Curious what is really going on that I'm not supposed to understand.

N00bN00b··on What caused all the supply chain bottlenecks?
>All of this funny stuff is mostly people trying everything they can to get capital gains instead of income so they can pay a 25% tax rate instead of a 39% tax rate. When you're talking about billions of dollars - 14% is a lot of money.

0.1% doesn't pay 25%. That's well documented. I don't know what the effective rate is, but averaged out over multiple years it's probably somewhere around 5% and then another few % that's spent on avoidance (not taxes). Maybe 10% at most.

Just look up Bezos or Musk's tax return. Same with Buffett.

N00bN00b··on A patent troll backs off
Ugly. So it's just a "protection fee" in a sense. Wouldn't surprise me if that's true.

You just won't find it written down anywhere.

N00bN00b··on Child suicides in Japan hit record high
It took me about 10 years to really understand the enormous differences between my native culture and my current culture. And those differences are staggering. And they are both western.

You're assuming you can "see" the cultural differences.

Sometimes you can easily see it, but often it's really hard to figure out, because they are going to express themselves in edge cases that you have to run into, which takes time and then it takes time to run into enough of them to be able to see a pattern.

N00bN00b··on Samsung Foundry Forum announcements
Kind of makes sense. People probably didn't all of a sudden become more dishonest. Thanks.
N00bN00b··on Samsung Foundry Forum announcements
>but it was in the past two decades and got particularly ridiculous beginning around "28nm" up to now.

I wonder if that is some kind of cultural shift that is taking place that started around 2009, or if it's always been like this and I just never noticed.

BMW model numbers used to more or less accurately reflect engine sizes, not anymore, it's just numbers now.

2G, 3G, 4G used to mean something, not anymore.

I could add a remark about the federal reserve, but... I'll just stay away from that. Don't want to be too edgy/turn this into a political discussion (I just think it's interesting from a cultural perspective).

It's like we collectively decided that "it's just numbers, man."

N00bN00b··on Private censorship is not the best way to fight hate or defend democracy (2018)
Comes down to your definition of advertisement.

It's not without self interest. But that was kind of my point. So I'd say you and I are on the same page, I just used a different way to describe it and if that wasn't clear, that's probably because of how I wrote it. But thanks for giving me your feedback.

N00bN00b··on Private censorship is not the best way to fight hate or defend democracy (2018)
>Reddit-like software is open source, what's stopping anyone like you then? Talk is cheap.

That source code hasn't been updated in years.

>There are job ads on HN, plus HN is even more highly moderated than Reddit. So it's a very bad example.

If you add meaning to the words of others that is not there, then indeed, the examples are bad.

To bring up the moderation here, you're supposed to be nice and interpret the words of others positively. Your reply is bordering on malicious:

>Be kind. Don't be snarky. Have curious conversation; don't cross-examine. Please don't fulminate. Please don't sneer, including at the rest of the community.

N00bN00b··on Private censorship is not the best way to fight hate or defend democracy (2018)
"Approaches free" does not mean "free" in this context and that HN derives that value in other ways than advertisement was the point I was making.
N00bN00b··on Cops Get Qualified Immunity After Jailing Florida Man for 'I Eat Ass' Sticker
Just so you know... Here you can't say that slang word for cigarette either. Because that comment where you said it to me is "dead" and doesn't allow me to reply to you.

If that's not ironic, don't know what is.

I don't want to be paranoid, I don't want to be an activist. But I can't even talk to you normally anymore. I constantly have to worry if I'm allowed to say certain words, I have to check my accounts to see if I was shadowbanned and I have to do that on all platforms once in a while.

It's ridiculous. I don't even think any extreme thoughts and I can't even be left alone. Like.. Leave me alone, you know? The internet wasn't like this 10 years ago.

N00bN00b··on Private censorship is not the best way to fight hate or defend democracy (2018)
Computation, bandwidth and (open source) software is so cheap these days that it approaches free for many people (but not all). It's just a matter of coming up with a functioning model.

Ad supported is just one such model and it's not a very new one at that. Remember, you made this comment on server that was provided to you for free without the need of ad support.

N00bN00b··on Private censorship is not the best way to fight hate or defend democracy (2018)
I don't really need to find myself, you know. I know where I am. The problem is more that others can't find me and don't even know that I'm missing. Maybe you're right about the reason, but even that's irrelevant.

It's scary. I happen to know this was done to me. How many times have others made you disappear without you knowing you were scrubbed without being given any notice?

This isn't my first account on hackernews (not my second one either, though with one exception they are all in good standing).

But my very first account, I was happily participating here for years, until someone kindly told me I had been shadowbanned and I don't how much of my voice was censored exactly and I don't know why.

So the issue isn't reddit. And apparently it's not really about me. The problem is exactly what this article is about, private censorship. Web3 is supposed to address issues like this (though, I don't know how much of that is handwaving and make believe). As soon as I can, I'm going to move there.

I just can't trust these corporate entities, they don't operate in good faith, aren't transparent and avoid accountability for their actions. The utopia that was promised to me has failed and is in full decay, the signs are everywhere. It's time to move on.

It's sad that a "normal user" like me ended up with those beliefs.

I just wanted to be left alone and allowed to voice my opinions, I don't want to have to deal with censorship, I don't want to have to tell others how I've been impacted by it, to make them aware of what's happening behind their backs. Instead, here I am having a discussion like this with others.

Am I even allowed to say this? Will this be wiped as well? I don't know. I wish this was all a joke. What kind of dystopian future is this? It's ridiculous beyond belief.

Oh yeah. Accounts have NSFW tags these days. Also impacts chat functionality. You'll get warnings there. They call it "profile" but your profile is 100% of your account activity.

This link has pictures in it, showing you the NSFW tag:

N00bN00b··on Elizabeth Holmes urged employees to hide Theranos’ lab equipment from inspectors
>I think a factor we all underestimate is Elizabeth herself has this super creepy presence in nearly every photo and video where she makes an appearance -- something just seems "off", in an almost uncanny valley sort of way, and confirmation that something is in fact "off" in the form of an actual scandal

Got to learn how to recognize the antisocial ones. This is how you figure that out.

You can fake a lot, but the involuntary eye muscles don't move properly, so you can see it in the eyes.

Some use that to avoid certain people. Some use it to find the people they are looking for. The words that are said don't matter as much. You can just look them in the eyes.

N00bN00b··on Private censorship is not the best way to fight hate or defend democracy (2018)
I'm being censored on Reddit myself.

I'm not really sure why exactly. I suspect it has to do with having a NSFW tag on my account (that I didn't put there) that I'm afraid to turn off, because of the warning that's next to that button and it doesn't explain what "swearing" is exactly and if I turn it off and write "fuck" I might get banned.

My account provides a lot of help to other people, it's highly valued by the community, I have loads of karma, I've paid for quite a bit of server time by the rewards I've received.

But you can't search on my username, it won't show up (not even if you have NSFW visibility turned on).

I'm not about politics, or covid or any hate stuff. I'm just there to try and help people with depression, anxiety and other issues. And I'm being censored for some reason.

So whatever they're doing, it's guaranteed to overreach and it's counter productive and who knows how much damage it does to society as a whole.

It's just that no one knows the severity of the damage the censorship does.

N00bN00b··on YouTube is banning anti-vaccine activists and blocking all anti-vaccine content
It's just a never ending disaster once you go down that path. Because now people have to "select" their community somehow.

If that existed, I'd refuse to be part of whatever community you think I belong to and I'm going to pick the one least likely to interfere with me.

And if it's a forced choice, I'm going to fight that instead. I think you'll have to educate and then just let everyone say whatever they want.

You know, you don't HAVE to remove a video. Can just put another video above it that says "here's what we think is going on" and be done with it.

They are. They don't even know how to pirate.

The best pirates would never use free open source solutions. They'd just take whatever corporate solution that's the flavor of the day and then use that with anxiety inducing cracks that will give your antivirus a heart attack.

N00bN00b··on Windows 11: Just say no
I'd love to say "I would never install windows 11!"

But microsoft already decided that for me. I don't have any TPM chips.

And I'm definitely not going to upgrade hardware for an OS upgrade that doesn't really add much.

Remember, they did the same thing with Windows 10 a couple of times.

N00bN00b··on “Don Quixote” as a manual for living
>The book is his personal revenge

The fact that you understand individual revenge against societies and know the creative shapes it can take, gives you credibility.

But I don't think there are a lot of people that manage to get up to that level of understanding of the complexity of human behavior and their relationship with society.

Maybe the problem is the bubble I surround me with, but for me you're the first to ever even bring it up as a concept, even though it is something that interests me, I love the duplicity and depth it takes, the veracity and creativity it can take, the willfulness it requires to exact your revenge and intentionally releasing your wrath on all of humanity in a constructive way.

But I suspect most people will have a hard time really understanding your comment.

Though as a current day Don Quixote, I do appreciate it. But don't think I don't know what I am. I just don't care about your judgement. You're just as insane and ridiculous as I am, I just embraced it with the same willful ignorance you're using to deny it. The fact that I will get punished for that is something I'm willing to accept in return for the bewilderment I cause. It's all a joke after all and I can't die more than a couple of times anyway.

Not like there's a whole lot else to do once you realize this is just a simulator and not a very good one at that. The fuck is this thing even supposed to do? Fucking AI has way too much processing power available if it's messing around to this degree.

N00bN00b··on Problems with Oracle SQL
PowerShell is easy to debug though. So I never have a problem with that. I generally program in it without ever looking at any documentation. I just don't need it.

Just get-help -full/get-member everything or export-clixml it. But maybe I've done it for too long, so I don't see the weaknesses anymore.

N00bN00b··on I won over $55M in the lottery, but didn’t tell my friends or family
Most humans suck at sorting out the cognitive dissonance between "I am a good guy" and "I let auntie Vanessa die".

Doesn't mean your approach isn't right. A lot of people just can't do that properly and it can cause stress and depression, so for them it's probably easier to just avoid having to think about it.

Humans aren't really the most sophisticated when it comes to situations like this. Almost like we weren't supposed to have 10,000x times more resources at our disposal compared to the person standing next to us.

But let's just ignore that and continue our game of monopoly. Maybe this time it'll end differently. I'm sitting next to the bank though, so the outcome is pretty much certain for me.

N00bN00b··on OnlyFans to block sexually explicit videos starting in October
>I find it utterly fascinating that Reddit is able to maintain such a huge porn collection with relatively little attention. I wish I knew what percentage of submissions were in NSFW subreddits, but I wouldn't be surprised if it were the majority.

All reddit NSFW content has been removed from /r/popular and /r/all about two months ago.

I think they're getting ready for an IPO.

All that porn probably won't be there anymore in a few years.
