MyHonestOpinon··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (September 2026)
You may find this interesting. "Orate" has a totally different meaning in Spanish. It basically means "Idiot" or "Demented". As in someone that has lost his/her mental abilities.
MyHonestOpinon··on What I Learned from My Mom (1941-2026)
What a beautiful life!
MyHonestOpinon··on Good Culture Is the Biggest Productivity Hack, Not AI
> I am working at a bigger place now and the AI mandates handed down have been quite unproductive... As if we wouldn't have been able ourselves to figure out how to use the new tools - like we have since the beginning of software.

This is so true. We have figured out how to use an endless list of software tools. Hardly anyone is as prepared to use the new tools as software engineers.

MyHonestOpinon··on Chicken products recalled in five states due to “false marks of inspection”
I don't really know if this is the cause. But the whole DOGE thing sounded highly irresponsible. Did they understand what they were cutting. Furthermore, there may be even worst consequences in the more distant future.

It is becoming very hard not to use an LLM. I have been working on a project all this year. I started doing everything by hand, and I am using LLMs a little bit more every day. I suppose we want to use projects that were crafted with care, whether or not LLMs were used. But it is not easy to figure that out. It reminds me. 30 years ago, before code formatters were popular, you could tell good code just by looking at how carefully formatted it was.
MyHonestOpinon··on AI is removing the middle class of software engineering?
I started using SCCS in the late 80s, then RCS, then CSV, then subversion, and finally git.
MyHonestOpinon··on AI is removing the middle class of software engineering?
I also consider myself a fairly good pragmatic software engineer. I have led small (3 engineers), medium (15), and large (100+) teams.

To me, the best time was late 90s, early 2000s. We had a lot of autonomy. People would just trusted that we knew what and how to build it. I could focus on building a great product. Overtime, we lost control, to the point that we now work based on jira tickets made by managers or product owners with one tenth of the experience that we have.

MyHonestOpinon··on I made tinnitus my friend, then it disappeared [video]
Same for me. But I suspect I got them by practicing spinning kicks in Tae-Kwan-do. I have to get checked for detachment, but I am good. Doctor told me that eventually my brain would erase them, What I have been doing just ignore them as much as possible.

MyHonestOpinon··on Four simple rules behind Japan's most liveable cities
Looked at the report. They only show the top 10 and bottom 10 cities. Which has very limited use. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_Liveability_Index#2026

I imagine the parent comment was just paraphrasing on the "Is the economy stupid" phrase from the Clinton campaign,
MyHonestOpinon··on A Sick People
Sure, horrible things happened. But a big part of those deaths was the new diseases that people had no developed immunity to. It was bound to happen sooner or later.
MyHonestOpinon··on How Olinia Turns Mexico's EV Ambition into Reality
Those are left-leaning only if you do not the details. Please consider that this government has a fantastic propaganda machine.

For example, We already had a Universal Basic Healthcare called Seguro Popular. Which was destroyed in 2018 by this regime on a tantrum which left millions without coverage. We went from 9% uncovered to 26% uncovered. They are still trying to figure out how to fix that.

The "Abrazos, no balazos" approach turned out to be the party colluding with organized crime to win elections.

MyHonestOpinon··on How Olinia Turns Mexico's EV Ambition into Reality
That was not my intention, but thanks for clarifying it.

Now days we have to ask if political movements are committed to democracy even before we ask if the lean left or right.

MyHonestOpinon··on How Olinia Turns Mexico's EV Ambition into Reality
The current government of Mexico sells itself as a left leaning party. But it has been destroying or capturing every institution we had built to support our democracy, the separation of powers and the rule of law. From the judicial branch, the electoral institute, the transparency institute and many more.

> Mexico most cabs there just have windows rolled down or even no windows at all aside from the windshield.

That is mostly untrue. I have only seen those in Mazatlan and other turisti destinations.

In your example, (it seem to me that) is not that the problems is expanding (getting worst) but it is reaching (helping) more people.

Well thought out strategic tariffs are ok. But this is knee jerk tariffs. Even in the best case scenario introduces a lot of uncertainty which freezes investing and decision making in general.

I am not sure if your initial paragraph was meant to be sarcastic. I do believe we should give additional help based on economic need rather than race or skin color.

Free universal preschool seems to have big impact. Also free universal school lunches are too. There may be other examples too.

MyHonestOpinon··on There are a few things that I look back on as my mistakes in the early days
I am under the impression that a big part of the current AI progress is the result of the availability of chips that were created for gaming.
MyHonestOpinon··on There are a few things that I look back on as my mistakes in the early days
But it is not only about the money. People just have their own lives, interests, and passions. For me, the lack of autonomy when doing my job kills a lot of the motivation.

I always thought that an Engineering degree with an MBA is a very good combination. You get very practical, useful things when you are younger. Once you have acquired enough life and work experience then you can appreciate the subtleties of cases that you study in an MBA.
MyHonestOpinon··on There are a few things that I look back on as my mistakes in the early days
Not disagreeing with you. Successfull people tend to have IQs between 120 and 135. (citation needed) It makes sense because there are a LOT more people in that range than in the 135+ range. 120-135 is often sufficient. I suspect that something similar on the rich scale. People like Gates, Bezos and Musk were not fabulous wealthy, but they had enough to be able to bet big and take big chances.
MyHonestOpinon··on Maria Isabel Sánchez Vegara on Her 100th "Little People, Big Dreams" Book
Girls are doing great, which is great! However boys are not doing so well. To add insult to injury, they are still blamed for what we (the rest of men through history) did.
