MrFantastic··on The unreasonable effectiveness of just showing up everyday
Your brains processes stuff in your sleep.

After some time off, I play much better the next day after practice than if I were to play immediately after practice.

MrFantastic··on Research suggests that when the rich bank, the rest borrow
The younger people that can qualify to buy a house aren't poor.
MrFantastic··on Research suggests that when the rich bank, the rest borrow
I thought it was more that rich people use excess funds and debt to buy more income producing assets.

Poor people have no excess cash and use debt to buy goods from companies and therefore the wealthy shareholders accumulate even more money.

Only 55% of the nation own stocks. The top 1% own 38% of the stocks.

MrFantastic··on Stack Overflow sold to Prosus for $1.8B
The first post on SO for most accounts tend to be from Newbs. The people see the question and think Read The Fucking Manual and downvote. Then you have zero karma and you can't do anything else.

The problem is that the Newb doesn't even know where to start in the manual.

MrFantastic··on Stack Overflow sold to Prosus for $1.8B
It's gotten brutal. I was learning a new language last year and all my posts were downvoted out of the que.
MrFantastic··on High IQs are associated with mental and physical disorders
My experience at MENSA meetings was a bunch of people bragging about their IQ. Many had their IQ listed on their name tag.
MrFantastic··on DARPA now has AI-controlled F-16s working as a team in virtual dogfights
A Tesla could make a left turn but they don't because the company doesn't want the liablity. Having to cross 3 lanes adds a lot of moving parts and you can't see a car moving 35mph in the 3rd lane when the other 2 lanes are stopped.

A plane basically has to avoid the ground and other planes.

The planes don't need human passengers. Humans are the planes Achilles' heel.

MrFantastic··on Reddit: Online Presence Indicators
I think that is set by mods. Some subreddits default to searching that subreddit.
MrFantastic··on When Everyone’s a Genius: A Few Thoughts on Speculation
If you own the entire company it's easier to weather market downturns. BRK prefers to own the entire company so they can allocate capital to the sectors than need it.
MrFantastic··on Training Makes Runners More Efficient, but Not Cyclists (2018)
You can spot inefficient runners once you know what to look for.

Efficient runners are striding 20 or 30% faster. Usually over 180 strides/minute.

If you look at the efficient runners head looks like it's floating smoothly. If you are bouncing you are losing energy.

MrFantastic··on An experiment in giving cash to recently homeless people [video]
UBI would lead to dramatic inflation in rents in desirable areas. There is only a finite amount of premium real estate.

UBI would just jack up rents by the amount of payment in San Jose or Boulder because the people that want to live there mostly have jobs so their extra UBI would just go to making their commute better.

UBI might help people move from West Virginia to Indianapolis but it won't help people in Bakersfield move to San Jose.

MrFantastic··on The great bicycle boom of 2020
I do a lot of my own bike repairs. When I take it to the local shop, they can fix it better than I can. When it's slow my local shop will show me how to do some tips on some of the different repairs. I replaced all the cables and shifters on my bike and I had a hard time getting the derailleur adjustments correct.

I had to replace some spokes, that would have taken me a while to do on my own and some specialized equipment I won't need again for a decade.

MrFantastic··on To the brain, reading computer code is not the same as reading language
3 years of HS spanish with a grammar nazi teacher. He's interupt mid-sentance to correct your verb tense.

His students were objectively less skilled than the other spanish teacher that focused on vocabulary and conversational skills.

MrFantastic··on DoorDash from Application to IPO
BTC is a great store of value until better tech come out then it's done.
MrFantastic··on DoorDash from Application to IPO
2 years ago, I could order 4 entrees from a local Indian restaurant for $50 + $20 tip. The same restaurant is DoorDash only now and the same order is $70 with no tip.

I don't order delivery anymore, for $20 I'll pick it up myself.

MrFantastic··on DoorDash from Application to IPO
Doordash, GrubHub and Uber Eats have increased prices for delivery with no increase in value.

I used to be able to order 4 entrees from a local Indian restaurant for $50 + $20 tip.

Now this same order costs $70 with no tip. The same applies to all local delivery now.

These 3rd party vendors are sucking the profit off the top, killing small businesses and increasing costs to consumers.

I thought capitalism made things more efficient, this is rent seeking.

MrFantastic··on L.A.'s coast was once a DDT dumping ground, but no one could see it until now
The SCOTUS basically ruled that Corporations are people in the Citizens United case.
MrFantastic··on L.A.'s coast was once a DDT dumping ground, but no one could see it until now
Corporations live forever. They should have an unlimited Statue of Limitations as well.
MrFantastic··on How to arm Caesarean babies with the gut bacteria they need
As gross as it sounds, why wouldn't dipping a finger in the vagina and into the babies mouth work?

50%+ of the population has conducted simular tests and everyone lives.

MrFantastic··on The benefits of note-taking by hand
I've taken pictures of my pencil diagrams. Label the photo well and you can reference easily.
MrFantastic··on Show HN: Healthcare Is Dumb
That's just for insurance. You still going to be paying 20% of the actual medical bill. You can easily run up a $100k bill in a week.
MrFantastic··on A College Degree Is No Guarantee of a Good Life
Parents that invest time and resources into their children?

We had a computer lab with 8 Apple II's in my public elementary school in 1983. We also had a few TRS-80s.

MrFantastic··on A College Degree Is No Guarantee of a Good Life
Productivity has increased but I'd argue that because of technological leverage and not more college grads.

A large portion of those creating the tech are self educated.

MrFantastic··on The Zen of Erlang (2016)
Immutable variables are too weird for me.
MrFantastic··on Population-level herd immunity against Covid-19 will not be achieved in 2020
The mindset that we can avoid all risk by staying in lockdown is wrong. The most at risk are people over 70. They already have a 6%+ percent chance of dying every year.
MrFantastic··on The Quora Partner Program Is a Scam
Quora is driving me crazy with all the requests to Answer questions that seem to be algorithmically generated.

Most of the question could be easily answered with the first result from Google or are purely opinion based.

MrFantastic··on An alternative argument for why women leave STEM
Men are hardwired to ascend to the top of the hierachy so they can access all the women. That's why male billonaires will risk their fortune to make another billion.

Women are not rewarded biologically for being the top 2% in their industry. It's almost as if the higher women climb career wise the fewer dating options they have because women tend to want men that are even higher on the totem pole.

Outside of a score keeping system, each additional dollar is less rewarding very quickly once you pass $150k in income.

MrFantastic··on Georgia election server showed signs of tampering, expert says
I live in one of the wealthiest zipcodes in Georgia that tends to vote strongly Democrat.

The usual voting location was moved to the edge of the district to a building with limited parking despite a large Church being located next to the usual voting location. Due to undersupplying voting machines the waits were 2hours +

Average wait in traditional Republican areas was under 15 minutes.

The GOP controls the Voting committee.

I have every reason to believe that was intentional.

MrFantastic··on Ask HN: What has your work taught you that other people don't realize?
Models are still the best way to attempt to understand other people's actions.

People rarely understand why they do things and even when they do they will often give a socially acceptable response vs the truth.

MrFantastic··on What Is the Most Valuable Thing You Can Learn in One Hour?
I know a few women that make $100k+ with $200k in a savings account. No equity in anything.

They are too scared to invest.
