SEPA seems to have no problem moving sub-euro amounts. I am not an entrepreneur, but I did send single euro amounts to my friends. Is it more difficult in USA?
Monory··on Germany's terrible trains are no joke for a nation built on efficiency
You are almost correct, according to SBB [0], train is considered to be on-time if the delay is less than 3 minutes.

Monory··on Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin
I got interested in that after your comment, and apparently there are two main reasons for that.

1. Oxygen is being produced in stars by so-called CNO cycle [0], which is how stars heavier than our sun mostly do their fusion. More intriguing question is why there's more oxygen than carbon or nitrogen (which, as implied by the name of the process, are also created), but that's a different topic.

2. Additionally, oxygen-16 is a particularly stable isotope, as its nucleus has “doubly magic” [1] amount of constituents, so it doesn't get destroyed in other processes.

Well, in ZSH [[ -v VAR ]] can actually differentiate between unset and null variables

And

NO_COLOR=

would lead to an non-intuitive behavior

More and more both personal computers and servers are using ARM CPUs without AES acceleration, though.

Also, write speeds of modern SSDs comes to be over 5 GBps.

Monory··on Atlassian fired me while I was taking care of my wife who is fighting cancer
> took 2 months off paid leave and then came back and quit immediately

That's absolutely common practice in places where you can accrue PTO without limits. People rest with compensation they earned and then leave re-energized. And that's a good thing.

Macs are definitely not personal — you can trivially set up multiple user accounts.
Monory··on Biden launches action on "Big Tech, Big Pharma, and Big Ag" – can it be real?
Am Russian, am vaccinated with Sputnik V, would do it again. Yes, the study was rushed and details were missing, but, eventually, all things got in order.

And it's a real working vaccine, effects of which I see basically every day on my friends.

You can also just go to any post, there will be no scrolling, too

The latest Firefox is actually v86, and the refresh button is right there for me.

Could you maybe have accidentally removed it in the Customize menu?

Monory··on Is soy a key driver of deforestation?
If you consider that eating plants is unethical, that's great! So you should go vegan, too, as most of our plants go to feed meat animals — thus you can minimize undue plant suffering.
Monory··on Is soy a key driver of deforestation?
You can, however, live without cheese. You cannot without breathing.

Monory··on Wikipedia Lost 3B Organic Search Visits to Google in 2019
Shouldn't Wikimedia Foundation be grateful for that? Their goal is met — people learn stuff even faster, and also they incur less server costs, because Google eats them.

For a site without ad revenue, it looks like a total win-win for them!

Monory··on Android updates are getting slower and slower, despite Google's best efforts
Fully-closing apps requires them to re-initialize them from scratch after each re-open, which is cpu-heavy (thus also battery-heavy) and slow.

A frequent usage pattern, also, is quickly switching between several apps. There's no definite “close” on mobiles apart from force-quits, which are unhappy for all apps, too.

Monory··on Dirty COW Was Livepatched in Ubuntu Within Hours of Publication
Never heard about Canonical Livepatch Service before that.

It looks really interesting and useful for patches like that, but, sadly, very expensive for use in production - it requires Ubuntu Advantage support package which is $250 per instance per year.

There are also more static variants. I know that Yandex collaborated with Zelenograd [0] (city to the north of Moscow) to optimize timings of city traffic lights. Yandex has similar data to what Google does in other places, due to Yandex.Maps app, and they reported to increase average car speed at many intersections without dropping average at any other one.

On the example shown, average car speed at one particular intersection improved from 10 km/h in rush hours to 30 km/h, which is fairly significant.

For many cities which do not want to spend money to replace all traffic lights, such collaborations could be less-than-optimal, but still a great improvement.

Monory··on DeepMind Challenges for StarCraft
Problem with that lies in different balancing.

For example, while banelings, are considered hard-counter to marines, stimpacked marines are still faster than even speed-banelings not on creep and just a little bit slower on creep. Pros use splitting to minimize damage, but here, as you can see, it can be just ultimate showdown.

Another example would be high templars vs ghosts. It is fairly difficult for Terran player to target high templars, but just two EMP shots basically puts templars out of combat, and miss of those shots renders ghosts mostly useless.

So, any area-of-effect attacks would be mostly useless due to infinite APM. That means minus colossi, tanks, banelings, thors and many other units. Probably that means that some race will be somewhat (or, maybe, insanely) overpowered (my bet is on Terran due to possibility of multiple drops, which themselves could be useless, though (because AI can't "miss" a drop), and stim-marine micro). So, the game will require massive rebalancing.

Monory··on DeepMind Challenges for StarCraft
All tanks have limited and fixed range, so Automaton just instantly splits all zerglings from the one which comes first into tank fire range. It IS instant, but highly deterministic, at least their first attacks are. And after their first shot, due to long cooldown, all zerglings are just already attacking tanks in fairly split manner and mostly unkillable by tanks anymore.
