I don't know if it's a scam but there's been guys hanging around the local greyhound station with stories like "my phone battery died while I was on the bus, can I use your phone to call my buddy to pick me up". And I don't want to be a jerk but something about it felt a bit too pushy, and if I give then my phone I was probably never going to see it or them again. Now just giving it unlocked to a squeegee kid? Hell no, that's just plain naive.
Yeah this thread has been the motivation for me to sign up on the wait list and cost out what it would take to try fine-tuning their older models on our data. There's still plenty of work out there when it comes to building a solution to a problem.
Also what happens to the intuition and unwritten skills that humans learned and passed on over time? Sure, the model has probably internalized them implicitly from the training data. But what happens in a case where you need to have a human perform the task again (say after a devastating war)? The ones with the arcane knowledge are gone, and now humans are starting from scratch.
The price isn't even that bad, even the most expensive at 6cents per 1k tokens, it won't cost me much. It's the context size that's amazing. Gone are the days of only being able to pass ~500 tokens into something like BERT.
I'm not at a big tech company, and we don't sell algorithms, but my team does use a lot of NLP stuff in internal algorithms. The only panic I have is trying to keep up and take the time to learn the new stuff. If anything, things like GPT-4 are going to make my team 10x more successful without having to hire an army of PhDs.
If you're in NA, I bet there's undergrads running around campus just as skimpily dressed. What do you do, walk around with your eyes closed lest you be fired for looking at a woman in public?
Thousands of laid off tech workers playing around with the bot / scraper / side project they always wanted to build? Maybe we'll see a flood of indie games on steam in 6 months too.
>Workers will be required to go through multiple rounds of disinfection and testing before being given clearance to enter, and won’t be able to leave the site until their next break – reportedly once a week.
I can't imagine living and working for weeks at a time in an environment like that,it sounds awfully dystopian. Imagine a cyberpunk future where the lower casts are permanent sequestered from society because they've been quarantined.
They weren't all strictly the same though, there's some variations on the theme. One company in the past was in the business of buying fish from fishermen in small remote towns, transporting and selling it wholesale. They were also in the business of financing the boats for the fishermen. The terms of the loans were predatory and the company was a monopoly in the area, whatever money the fishermen made just went back to the company.
The analogy kind of breaks down because black swans all look the same so I'll propose switching to snowflake events. Each one is beautiful and unique and we're starting to head into a flurry of them.
Between covid, an attempted insurrection, proxy war with Russia and now this potential financial crisis, there's a new black swan event happening every ~12 months.
I wonder if that'll ever cause legal problems in the future. Sorry, that photo someone took where the accused was in background at a party some years ago? He was kinda blurry and those facial features have been enhanced with AI, that evidence will have to be thrown out. Or maybe the photo is of you, and you need it as an alibi..
