MonkeyMalarky··on What does "Copy clean link" mean?
Does something like that exist for Reddit? Whatever it is they use on their website is a janky piece crap.
MonkeyMalarky··on Chemicals released during wildfires in Australia damaged the ozone layer
Probably no one wants to take the risk or responsibility for letting a small one burn in the event that they lose control. No one gets in trouble for failing at trying to put it out. But taking the decision to stand back? You'll get raked over coals if it was the wrong decision.
MonkeyMalarky··on Canada's tax revenue agency tries to ToS itself out of hacking liability
I'm fairly confident that we deal with both here. They are totally separate entities and they don't even talk to each other. We get 2x the papers (R1 and T4), and we file separately with each. It's possible to get a refund cheque from one and still owe the the other.

But forget the CRA, ask me about how mine and many other peoples drivers licenses were suspended for weeks because the SAAQ totally fucked a software migration.

MonkeyMalarky··on Haraldur Thorleifsson's Personal Site
That article is total garbage and the author comes off as a complete douche bag. Did he add anything of value or just regurgitate a link to Wikipedia, quote Jordan fucking Peterson and take some time to attack some straw-man voss-water drinking academics he made up?
MonkeyMalarky··on 90k Miles on My Tesla Model 3 – Maintenance Costs Higher Than Expected
6" of packed snow should not be a problem for a car designed in North America, right?
MonkeyMalarky··on Iran says suspected schoolgirl poisonings occurred in more than 50 schools
I don't have any involvement or personal connections. It just looks weird? Honestly, I want it to be true, but I'm also old enough to remember the whole twitter revolution that was totally going to happen a decade ago but didn't. In that subreddit, what is the proportion of westerners to Iranians? I have no idea, but the one signal I have is that the posts are majority English. Which is depressing. It's like when there's a local election and reddit is a huge echo-chamber that's 100% convinced their chosen candidate will win, who subsequently gets crushed. Is this any different?
MonkeyMalarky··on Twitter can’t protect you from trolls any more, insiders say
Can't, or won't?
MonkeyMalarky··on Iran says suspected schoolgirl poisonings occurred in more than 50 schools
Farsi? To flip it around a bit, imagine a Russian majority telegram channel dedicated to the upcoming American civil war. What would you think about that? Well, how is an English majority subreddit any different?
MonkeyMalarky··on Iran says suspected schoolgirl poisonings occurred in more than 50 schools
Why are the posts there in English?
MonkeyMalarky··on Amazon is closing its cashierless stores in NYC, San Francisco and Seattle
Trusting customers to key in the correct product code when using the scale is foolish though. Supposedly there's a store out there that sold more bananas in weight through the self-checkout than they had shipped in.
MonkeyMalarky··on Chinese banks cause alarm as capital flight measures intensify
Like that one Chinese student buying a $31M house in Vancouver!
MonkeyMalarky··on Ask HN: Science fiction movies that are appropriate for 12 year olds?
Start Trek Prodigy is aimed at kids and not bad either.
MonkeyMalarky··on Ask HN: Science fiction movies that are appropriate for 12 year olds?
Also Videodrome.. snuff films / torture porn are literally a plot point.
MonkeyMalarky··on Ask HN: Science fiction movies that are appropriate for 12 year olds?
While it isn't sci-fi, it'd probably be right up their alley: October Sky.
MonkeyMalarky··on Leaked audio reveals US rail workers were told to skip inspections
Only rogue engineers get punished.
MonkeyMalarky··on Nordstrom to close all 13 stores in Canada, lay off 2,500 workers by June
It is a hard market but foreign retailers can be very successful if they have the right value proposition. Uniqlo and Decathalon (French) are both packed whenever I go.
MonkeyMalarky··on Cucumber maintainer has been laid off
The same thing happens with BI platforms. Everyone asks for a tool that business folks can use, developers go through all the effort in creating data integrations, then they turn around and ask the developers to just make the reports they wanted anyways. If that's how it was going to be, there's a lot of simpler solutions than a full blown BI platform...
MonkeyMalarky··on ChatGPT and the AI Apocalypse
>Bing didn't threaten users

I like how society progressed straight to the AIs from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy; Someone needs to add the angry Bing ChatGPT to elevators. Forget bland muzak, I want to be casually threatened while riding up and down!

MonkeyMalarky··on Chicago sold rights to 36k parking meters for $1.2B that generate $200M per year
Came here looking for the highway 407 comment! Speaking of privatization, how's it going with Hydro One? And you must be so excited for the upcoming privatized surgeries...
MonkeyMalarky··on EV startups from Lucid to Rivian see demand fade, supply chain issues linger
Something has got to give in North America, car prices have inflated but public transit costs and ridership in cities is at risk of a "death spiral", and there's a lot of people who can't afford the first who are going to be screwed by the second.

The same white collar workers that can afford the price of a new EV and have a place to charge it, are doing WFH now; they were also the same people doing daily commutes and paying into public transit which made it cheaper for everyone.

MonkeyMalarky··on Canada bans TikTok on government devices over security risks
It's all rather hilarious. The tiktok story is the 2nd headline on Google news for me. The first being something insane about a CCP official, CSIS, and a fat donation the PM's charity fund??
MonkeyMalarky··on The Camera-Shy Hoodie
An uncomfortable and time consuming one indeed.

MonkeyMalarky··on Generative AI could be an authoritarian breakthrough in brainwashing
Apparently vast swaths of humanity are dumb as bricks and teaching them to "think critically" has somehow ended up with a bunch of of knee-jerk contrarians who think they've uncovered conspiracies from global warming to covid vaccines.
MonkeyMalarky··on Stack Overflow is a cacheless, 9-server on-prem monolith
Hehehe. This is absolutely true and trying to explain it to anyone around me makes me feel like a Cassandra quoting battlestar galactica: "All of this has happened before. All of this will happen again". I'm not even old, I just happened to witness the tail end of SOA when I was still a student, followed by the rise of micro-services afterwards. Your service mesh is just someone else's message bus. Sure, it's different. Except not really. Also, bonus points for younger developers reinventing features for json APIs that SOAP already had.
MonkeyMalarky··on Canada starts investigating TikTok over data collection from young users
Yes. This is the Canadian government in a nutshell. Its like the saying "no one has been fired for choosing IBM", the government here runs on always making the safest, least boat-rocking decisions. Oftentimes, not doing anything at all. For decades on end.
MonkeyMalarky··on Four Stars for Peeling Paint and Broken Doors? What’s Behind High Airbnb Ratings
In cities: Parking? Yes, there is parking. Of course there's parking... in the general area. Oh, you were driving in from 6 hours away and relying on it? Sorry, we're gonna go no-contact at 11pm for the rest of your stay. Enjoy!

In rural areas: whoopsie the romantic getaway with a claw foot bathtub also has disgusting well water that stinks and stains everything it touches. Btw, you should buy and drink bottled water only here; According to the printed instructions left on the kitchen table that you'll only get to see after arriving. P.s. Complain about this and we'll leave a bad review on you.

I still have a couple hundred dollars of credit on my account from my last shit stay and I'm not even going to use it, I'm so fucking done with AirBnB.

MonkeyMalarky··on Planting Undetectable Backdoors in Machine Learning Models
Good for you!
MonkeyMalarky··on Planting Undetectable Backdoors in Machine Learning Models
That was my first impression as well. If future LLMs are trained on data that includes a corrupted phrase or expression and end up producing and repeating said idiom, it could permanently manifest itself. Anyways, don't count your donkeys until they've flown by midnight.
MonkeyMalarky··on Planting Undetectable Backdoors in Machine Learning Models
So, reading the summary the idea is that by trusting AWS sage maker or whoever to train your models, you open yourself up to attack? Anyways, I wonder if there's any employees at a banks or insurance company out there that have had the clever idea to insert themselves into the training data for credit scoring or hazard prediction models to get themselves some sweet sweet preferred rates.
