Mobius01··on All-natural geoengineering with Frank Herbert's Dune
Frank himself, you can get a clear picture of the ecosystem as outlined here by the end of Children of Dune.

One (possible) omission here - the sand trout traps water underground by linking and forming dams around water pockets - that’s the cause of Arrakis’ ultra arid environment, but maybe it’s also the source of nutrition?

Anyway, it is a bit silly indeed but in the novel’s context it feels grounded.

Mobius01··on How to make sense of any mess
Interesting to see it crop up here. I met Ms. Covert when she released the book and have a signed copy around here somewhere. It remains relevant as ever, and has value well beyond UX practices. It’s a short read too, I recommend it.
Mobius01··on Google's Gemini tops Apple's App Store, snagging lead spot from ChatGPT
I suspect this is happening due to the nano-banana image model becoming available to the general public. As a designer/artist, the generative image models’ impact on my field has been disastrous and depressing. For the average person, it’s the greatest thing they’ve ever seen.
Mobius01··on Microsoft is officially sending employees back to the office
I work in a large company that mandated 4-day RTO last year. Even taking a completely objetive point of view on the situation leads to the conclusion that something else is needed. We spend our days at our desks, on Zoom calls. People won’t get up to join in person - mostly because the conference rooms are all blocked by “special projects”, but mostly due to the offshoring of positions and distributed workforce post-pandemic. We are all spending valuable time on commutes to do what was possible from home.

Now I suspect the C-suite has noticed the discrepancy between attendance and occupancy, and I fully expect that their solution in this job market to be a 5-days, monitored attendance RTO soon. We are regressing at an alarming rate.

Mobius01··on Microsoft's Copilot AI is now inside Samsung TVs and monitors
As a rule, never connect a TV to the internet - use an Apple TV instead. Apple are no saints, but they’re not blatantly doing these things and the user experience is vastly superior.
Mobius01··on Covid vaccine in US now requires consultation with physician
I work in a very large corporate office, and Covid is showing signs of coming back in force - two close colleagues are down this week and several reports across the building. And I can’t get a booster because these ignorant imbeciles decided for me, based on non-scientific vibes?
Mobius01··on America by Design
They destroyed 18F for this.

I can already see the dog and pony show briefings of design solutions that will never see the light of day. Someone will walk away richer and the people will see no benefit. I can’t believe this nation is that stupid.

Mobius01··on The History of F1 Design
Skipping the MP4/4 is an odd choice too, as it is widely considered the pinnacle of F1 car design and with results to show for it.
Mobius01··on Trump, Apple to Announce New $100B Commitment to Manufacturing in US
Another factory that will take 5 years to come online. Which will turn into 10. Which will then quietly fade into the background as something that never came to fruition and was done for the optics?
Mobius01··on What went wrong for Yahoo
Now I want a counter factual story about Yahoo acquiring Facebook, which then never flourishes into the influential network it became. What happens to society? Would we have the same political climate?
Mobius01··on Instapaper Rakuten Kobo Integration
Brilliant news! I really like my Kobo Libra, it feels like the idea eReader format.
Mobius01··on US AI Action Plan
Removing Red Tape and Onerous Regulation Ensure that Frontier AI Protects Free Speech and American Values Encourage Open-Source and Open-Weight AI Enable AI Adoption Empower American Workers in the Age of AI Support Next-Generation Manufacturing Invest in AI-Enabled Science Build World-Class Scientific Datasets Advance the Science of AI 9 Invest in AI Interpretability, Control, and Robustness Breakthroughs Build an AI Evaluations Ecosystem Accelerate AI Adoption in Government Drive Adoption of AI within the Department of Defense Protect Commercial and Government AI Innovations Combat Synthetic Media in the Legal System

I can’t take this seriously, as recent actions by this administration directly contradicts a few of these stated goals.

Or maybe I don’t want to, because this sounds dangerous to me at this time.

Mobius01··on US Defense Department will stop providing satellite weather data
Is this an attempt at controlling the narrative around climate change, in line with the impacts at NOAA and other climate-related government agencies?
Mobius01··on The Gentle Singularity
Taking his word for it, that OpenAI is casting its future on two companies that have never built a single data center is cause for a raised eyebrow.
Mobius01··on The $11T gap between White House and economists on Trump's 'big, beautiful' bill
If we go by prior behavior, blame the Biden administration, blame our trading partners and allies (if we have any left by then), then democratic states, then immigrants, then minorities and the more vulnerable in society… eventually they may turn on their own escape goats.

It’s hard to believe a superpower could self-sabotage so throughly.

Mobius01··on The Gentle Singularity
> A lot more people will be able to create software, and art. But the world wants a lot more of both, and experts will probably still be much better than novices, as long as they embrace the new tools.

"probably", "if they embrace the new tools". Hard to read anything but contempt for the role of humans in creative endeavors here, he advocates for quantity as a measure of success.

Mobius01··on "AI Will Replace All the Jobs " Is Just Tech Execs Doing Marketing
This reminded me of this short story where the AI disruption starts as a work management software directing workers in a burger shop:

Mobius01··on Show HN: Time Portal – Get dropped into history, guess where you landed
I love the concept! A really compelling game , especially for history nerds like me. Two thoughts:

1. The AI imagery is often misaligned with the actual answer, with some anachronistic elements.

2. The scoring seems harsh. I got a couple of answers within 50km and/or 10 years in the time scale but was still severely penalized.

Good luck with this, I will definitely watch your progress and pass it along

Mobius01··on Kill your Feeds – Stop letting algorithms dictate what you think
It makes perfect sense in the current direction of travel - people are more than happy to give up their ability to choose and think for themselves.
Mobius01··on A web app to read Latin texts with inline translations
I really enjoyed this. You made a great choice in typography and the relative size where the English translations do not interfere with the original Latin text. I hope you can continue.
Mobius01··on Bill Ackman Raised No Money
None. Did you know know he now has a podcast as well? It’s a great Friday listen.
Mobius01··on Ted Chiang has won the PEN/Faulkner Foundation's short story prize
I re-read it often. It’s one of the best short stories I’ve read in the entire life.
Mobius01··on You Can Buy a Used Tesla for Cheap. Just Be Careful If You Do
Not precisely what you asked for, but here is a V8 Tesla Model S. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-6kHjF1U1E&t=956s (mild content discretion advised)
Mobius01··on McKinsey Under Criminal Investigation over Opioid-Related Consulting
I have no more to say than… good. I’ve been witness first hand of their consulting practices and the aftermath on people’s lives.
Mobius01··on Ask HN: In Dallas for the Eclipse?
Head to Plano, near the Legacy area where some corporate HQs are. It’s a flat area without high buildings and wide parking lots.
Mobius01··on The Real-World Locations of 14 Sci-Fi Dystopias (2014)
It was prominently featured in Westworld (the HBO series) from season 2 onwards as the headquarters of Delos Inc.
Mobius01··on Open Source Rewrite of Civilization 1 Source Code – OpenCiv1 Project
Cesar 3 was also rewritten (https://github.com/bvschaik/julius), and besides the marvelous work from the author that has allowed fans of the original to experience it on modern platforms and further preserve it, it has also invigorated the community and spawned other efforts to further enhance the game.

It’s a shame that many companies do not agree with such an approach for dormant or abandonware properties.

Mobius01··on OpenAI's board has fired Sam Altman
Maybe there was a breakthrough, the sort the makes one pause and wonder if it should have been done? Or an application of their current models that crossed hard ethical lines?
Mobius01··on Ozempic linked to stomach paralysis, other gastrointestinal issues: UBC study
Anecdotal sample of one here: since starting the treatment a year ago, I have hardly set foot in a fast food restaurant, and my visits to other food establishments have been reduced by 75% at minimum. Grocery shopping has been more mindful and smaller in size. The impact on my desire or even ability to consume food beyond the base metabolic necessity is real.
Mobius01··on The Transfer of a Russian ICBM to North Korea?
Nobody is using nuclear weapons, or everyone is using them and exit the human race. They’re political tools more than effective weapon systems now.
