I am the Technical Co-Founder of a Stealth-Mode Software Startup.

We expect to retain a few consultants towards the end of the year, if things go well we will hire some W-2 employees in Spring of 2016.

If you'd like to work for us, whether as a consultant or employee, please mail your dead-tree cover letter and resume to:

   Michael David Crawford
   650 NW Irving St
   Portland OR 97209-1272
   USA
We're mostly cool with remote work; that is, some of our projects must be done on site but most don't need that.

Consultants may send brochures or other marketing lit rather than their resumes. If you are a consultant, really a trifold brochure is far, far better than a resume and cover letter.

While I cannot guarantee response of any sort, to the very best of my ability I _will_ reply. If I don't think we could possibly extend you an offer, I may be able to suggest someone else who could.

I won't ask you to do any coding outside your interview. I myself regard coding challenges as unpaid labor. My decision to pursue this startup had a lot to do with my decision to boycott coding challenges.

Wish us luck: most new business fail within the first five years.

MichaelCrawford··on Ethiopian LGBT Activist Banned by Facebook Under Real Name Policy
While not strictly required Facebook is persistent in trying to obtain my mobile phone number.

I'm cool with facebook knowing my mail and my real name but there are some people that I don't want to hear from on the phone. Were they to email me I would just mark them as spam.

Also if facebook knows my number then it can follow me whereever I go, or rather, whereever I go while my phone is powered on.

MichaelCrawford··on Hillary Clinton Plans to Campaign Against Uber’s Contractor Economy
Just the other day someone posted a link about the "sharing economy" job of pretending to be a girlfriend. The service is promoted as a way to convince others that you're getting some.

In reality is is used for many things, for example the author's "boyfriend" wrecked his car and needed someone to talk to.

However the author found that she earned about one dollar per hour. The crowdsourcing company that she worked for points out that, as its workers are independent contractors, it is not bound by employment laws.

I hasten to disagree but that's what the company actually says.

I see the sharing economy as the problem not the solution.

You have absolutely no idea.

While not dead certain I speculate that we could reverse global warming by powering off all the child pornography servers.

I regard Microsoft's Bing Image search as the most-egregious offender.

Clark County Washington Deputy C. Bull suggested I notify the FBI. "The FBI obviously knows about it," I replied. "There must be some reason they don't enforce the law. I have some theories but really I do not know."

My essay is a very rough draft but far enough along that you can see where I am going with it.

MichaelCrawford··on The Reddit Problem
I don't agree with von Rospach's position.

Among the problem he cites is that the moderators were not require to align with the company. He suggests that they should have been paid as consultants, which would enable Reddit to force compliance with company policy.

My take is that the problem is that Reddit did not align with the moderators.

A very common problem, not just with community-driven websites, but any enterprise which is largely driven by volunteers, is that the volunteers really do have a legitimate equity stake in the company. Terms of Service, Privacy Policies, copyright licenses or even assignments have no bearing on that.

Piss off your volunteers and they will all walk away.

Sun's Open Source Diva was hired specifically to explain Open Source to Sun's own staff, after the public outcries that resulted from such blunders as granting new employee commit privileges without them having proved their chops to the volunteer developers by submitting patches via email or by attaching them to bugs.

In my own case I was very excited to subscribe to a feral cat political activism newsletter. But I quickly unsubscribed when I found no way to contact the people who wrote the newsletter. While I think they mean well they were soliciting donations but they were not even permitting me to give them suggestions as to how to save the lives of cats.

It's not just for-profit corporations; IMHO nonprofits are commonly far worse. It is the result of cognitive dissonance. Because the nonprofit is predicated on doing right by others when they do wrong they regard those they harm of deserving of their unjust punishment.

When deciding whether to donate money to or volunteer for a nonprofit, visit their offices. Do they have a nice view out the window? Aeron chairs? Lamborghinis in the parking lot?

Hookers and blow?

That's why I intend to donate to the Portland Rescue Mission, Blanchet House of Hospitality, Salvation Army, Union Gospel Mission and some of the churches around here but I will be damned if the Central City Concern ever manages to pry a contribution from my cold dead hands.

HN's CMS doesn't interpret your angle brackets correctly; the first yields "No Posts Found" and the second 404s.

Here is the correction for the second:

but I wasn't able to figure out what to do with the first.

I have lots of ideas as to how to change that; the problem is not unique to the government.

Real Soon anow http://wew.warplife.com/jobs/ will redirect to a domain that my brother in law will register for me because my reputation for speaking my mind has made me completely unemployable.

It was plainly apparent who "the clint" was.

That got on my nerves.

"'The client' is really, really happy with all the prototype boards that we just soaked The American Taxpayer for."

"Great. Please tell 'The Client' that YOU SELECTED THE WRONG "PART!"

Click.

I have the idea that I could offer the consulting service of selecting 'The Parts' to the extent they are unclassified. They often are. But I dont have the first clue as to how to get started. Among my concerns is that some contractors dont want to pay someone to tell them how to avoid cost overruns.

MichaelCrawford··on Ask HN: What tasks you would give to your squire?
When I was a teaching assistant the teacher gave me some cash every day so I could buy her lunch. That gave her time to grade papers.

I personally would have my squire read Havker News for me. Thst way I could get some sleep.

Then I expect the best contribution I could make is to continue writing.

I was an unclassified subcontractor once. The primary contractor selected me for my expertise with "the part".

What he should have done was to ask me to select the vendor. The part I was asked to write code for had quite a serious design flaw.

Is there some way I could do military computing without a clearance?

I applied to the US Air Force Cyber Command as well as all manner of military computer security jobs. I received but one response, that my application to be an encryption machine trainer was declined.

I offer my heartfelt and humble apology for insulting you.

That was not my intention though I do understand why you took it that way.

I intended to insult the United States Congress.

MichaelCrawford··on Office of Personnel Management Says Hackers Got Data of Millions of Individuals
I can see your point.

However a problem we really do have is that we have lost our expertise. The COTS mandate lead to less demand for the kinds of engineers who could have prevented this breach.

My friend Murray Sims is a naval civil service coder. He rang me up once to beg me to work for the navy:

"People are dying because of software bugs."

Id love to but I get a little loopy sometimes so have no hope of getting a clearance, instead I write technical articles.

MichaelCrawford··on Office of Personnel Management Says Hackers Got Data of Millions of Individuals
The goverment has known how to vet their systems since well before 1989, when I attended a class taught by a security consultant for the DoD.

For example, your aged grandfather used to run ethernet through pressurized conduit. If that pressure ever dropped some heavily armed men would turn up.

The IP packet header has fields for security classification as well as compartment. If I design warheads and you design rocket engines, our computers are in different compartments so the router between us will drop packets if you and I attempt to discuss our work. However I could invite you to lunch.

What Bradley Manning did was simply not possible. Or rather it would not have been without the Congressional COTS mandate: Common Off-The-Shelf Computers. Rather than design special hardware or write special software for military computing the avionics for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter were purchased online from Alibaba.

Had I ever thought to bring a tape recorder to school I could have had two of my teachers prosecuted for child abuse.

Instead I puzzled over bringing a bayonet however I could see how that might lead to my not getting into a good university.

I am not cool with them discovering I read their eMail while receiving pleasure in a hoyse of ill repute.

MichaelCrawford··on Why does Gmail hate my domain?
That's my whole point.

I regard such tracking pixels as morally reprehensible. While I know most of my subscribers will disable remote images anyway, quite likely they would think poorly of me for serving them.

All the stuff I read about email marketing is all about all the kewel things one can do with email bugs.

MichaelCrawford··on Why does Gmail hate my domain?
I dont regard SEO consultants as spammers.

Whenever they solicit me I respond immediately with links to my own SEO articles. Of course the very best SEO is for ones own website to go viral at an SEO board.

One enterprising young South Asian was obviously a clueless newbie so I gave my reply a great deal of care. A few hours later he responded with:

"You are my SEO master."

I dontbreally offer SEO consulting but to claim that I do results in lots of Google Juice.

I am going to give Luke The Smackdown.

I have devoted years to beating a clue about marketing through his pointy skull but then he complains that he has to take contract comouter janitor work to pay his data center.

I expect he shops at that dame Safeway.

The way he needs to market was established in the 1960s by the stanford alumni association but Luke refuses to Read The Fine Manual.

He knows all about Open Source though.

MichaelCrawford··on Why does Gmail hate my domain?
I plan to build a developer mailing list but am hesitant to actually do so because all the advice I read tells me to do things that I personally find morally reprehensible.

tl;dr: I would blackhole my own mailserver.

Have you any advice for me?

Im planning to use confirmation as is done by free software mailing lists but my concern is how to flog my website without offending anyone by flogging my website.
