McDyver··on Apple AirPods Can Work as More Affordable Hearing Aids, Study Finds
The upcoming PineBuds PRO seem to do that also [1]

> The BES2300 – the chips at the heart of the PineBuds Pro – was seriously considered for hearing-aids, so there is a potential that the PineBuds Pro could serve as over-the-counter (OTC) hearing-aids for people with very limited hearing impairment.

McDyver··on Systemd 252
Just because the project is moving, doesn't mean it's moving in the right direction.

What I like about linux in general, is that there are lots of small tools, with a reduced and specific scope, that do their job well. Systemd seems to want to do and control everything.

McDyver··on Traffic cameras expose your location through parking apps
Even if you did nothing wrong and "have nothing to hide"(TM), knowing where you are can also tell others where you aren't.

It gives the possibility to infer patterns from your travels, or can, for instance, give a thief the opportunity to rob your place knowing that you are 200 km away and won't be home any time soon.

McDyver··on Ask HN: For a job in tech, are you only interested in remote only jobs?
Full remote only (with option to go to the office sporadically)

If I commute for 1 hour a day (being optimistic), that's (22*10) almost 10 full days wasted per year.

Time is my most valuable asset, and I'd rather waste it doing things I like

McDyver··on Ask HN: What are you doing this weekend?
Maybe you could consider complementing your walks with some open street map surveying:

McDyver··on Tell HN: Locked out of Gmail account even after right password, recovery email
It doesn't matter if you have a reminder, a banner, someone going to your door to ask you to confirm.

If you miss that step, because you're in a hurry, your kid pressed the button while you looked away, or whatever, you shouldn't be immediately locked out of your whole life without recourse.

We allowed ourselves to be held hostages by these companies, but we should know better now.

McDyver··on ‘Return to the office’ rhetoric needs to end
It's interesting that this is happening mainly with Big Names.

At the Big Name Im'm working for, this is also being mandated, at the advise of PwC. 4000 people back to the office full-time.

I wonder if others are also being influenced by consulting companies.

McDyver··on Australian Signals Directorate coin code cracked by 14yo in 'just over an hour'
"And believe it or not, a boy, 14 years old in Tasmania, was the first person in just over an hour to get *all four* layers right."

Cue Maxwell Smart: "would you believe 5 layers?"

McDyver··on Ask HN: Can I see your cheatsheet?
Delete empty files / empty directories

find . -type f -empty -print -delete

find . -type d -empty -print -delete

Move photos/videos to folder, based on their creation date

exiftool -d /home/user/Photos/%Y-%m-%d "-directory<CreateDate" ./VID*.{mp4,jpg}

(or leave the extension out, and all files with EXIF data will be included)

McDyver··on Why All Cryptocurrency Should Die in a Fire
It's good you live somewhere where hiding your sexuality is not an issue.

But, for argument's sake let's say you can be put in jail or killed for your sexuality. You want to buy something from a specific store that caters exclusively to your sexual preferences. The CC company sells that to your government (or another entity wanting to enforce that), then you are arrested or killed, or you family harassed.

McDyver··on Mullvad VPN now accepts Monero payments
OK, so using your logic, if you're wearing a balaklava to warm up your head, don't use cash. Will remember that
McDyver··on Mullvad VPN now accepts Monero payments
Does that mean that every user replying to this thread is a criminal and have no legitimate use to the VPN?
McDyver··on Mullvad VPN now accepts Monero payments
I couldn't find that option, so I'd say no
McDyver··on Mullvad VPN now accepts Monero payments
I would say VPN and monero are the digital equivalent to a balaklava and cash.

Did you ever use any of those in "real life", or only when committing crimes?

McDyver··on Mullvad VPN now accepts Monero payments
AirVPN

You can use openvpn or wireguard as clients (or their own), and while i was writing this I just saw they accept payments with different crypto (bitcoin, ethereum, litecoin, bitcoin cash, dash, doge, monero)

McDyver··on DaVinci Resolve 18
It is! And you can also get the speed editor + resolve for the same price. Kind of "do you want a free speed editor with that?" :)
McDyver··on [dead]
How easy would it be to associate that z logo with a "naZi" message.

Maybe people will stop supporting it so blindly

McDyver··on Avoid the Apple App Store
If I buy a diesel car, should I only be allowed to use Apple Diesel? What happens if I fill up with MS petrol and damage the engine? Do I need to go to some Genius to tell me I'm an idiot?
McDyver··on The EARN IT act is back, and it’s more dangerous than ever
> They just want to provide a life for their family.

That's true, and keeping people worried about their next paycheck is a great way to control them.

The good thing about this "great resignation" or "great renegotiation", is that some people are starting to take that fight into their own hands. They are shifting the power and taking control of their own lives.

Eventually their focus will no longer be on short-term survival, and thry will take control of other aspects of their lives that currently are not so pressing.

I'm hopeful that younger people will be more aware, and see through these boomer games.

McDyver··on Portugal bans bosses texting staff after-hours
As someone mention in another comment, sending an email would be more adequate. The reason being that even if people are "adults, and have the judgement to make the correct call", there is always a looming implied pressure in sending an instant message. Not everyone will have the mental fortitude to just leave things for later, when the boss sends a message.

McDyver··on Bitcoin could trigger financial meltdown, warns Bank of England
We've tried the banks' way since forever, and we have meltdowns every couple of years, with more money being poured to "save" the banks.

Maybe it's time we try a different approach and just let cryptocurrencies be adopted, to see how it goes

McDyver··on Ask HN: Smoothness and performance of Qt based systems vs. native apps and OS
If you are privacy-minded, KDE (with the kuserfeedback) should put you off, due to the user data it collects and sends back. You can disable the sending back, but not the collection.

There are a number of packets that depend on this, so you can't just remove it. Although you can recompile it to disable data collection, it's not something everyone just does.

McDyver··on Bitcoin's growing e-waste problem
There seem to be studies after studies [0] of how wasteful Bitcoin (PoW) is - correctly so.

Are there any similar studies regarding the banking system?

With buildings and buildings full of offices just for banks, their IT infrastructure, plus ATMs, POS, etc.

How frequently are these systems replaced/upgraded?

How much energy are they using?

I think it would be interesting to make a comparison.

[0] (I have no sources, just based on seeing links to similar studies recently)

McDyver··on Tech-savvy audiences block Google Analytics
While that speculation is plausible, another view would be that companies would offer quality content without tracking users and invading their privacy (how many paid services still flood you with ads?), and possibly free alternatives would start to come up.

From your point of view, free open source is something that wouldn't exist

McDyver··on Japan's cherry blossom: as indisputable as climate change evidence gets
Like defending your privacy from apps constantly asking for access to your contacts. Once you're a bit distracted and press "allow" by mistake, it's gone
McDyver··on Why many people who make over $100k will likely continue to work from home
If they lack trust in their workers, they can replace them, no?

Especially if they don't force everyone to come to the office and hire remote workers.

Win-win

McDyver··on “One Day Longer and Those 13 Boys Would Be Dead”
A sonar wouldn't help in such a pressing situation. The sonar would only provide a map that would still need to be interpreted, and wouldn't solve the actual problem of transporting the boys.

Those "helmets" exist, but helmets as such are used in commercial diving with a tether to the diver. Not very practical to have it running along the cave for multiple divers. The full face masks that allow that are mainly used in open circuit diving and are bulky. I don't know if the pros/cons would make a huge difference.

At one point I believe Tesla or just Musk were planning and developing a pod to carry each boy, but the tunnels and sumps were so narrow that they wouldn't be able to make the turns.

Having tunnels with compressed air to inflate them would have similar issues with the bends. Not to mention the amount of gas and pressure needed to displace all that water.

I guess they took the most direct and logistically available option. I'm sure it will be a case study for the future.

McDyver··on FINRA Orders Record Financial Penalties Against Robinhood
You should be able to sell it, yes. But who are you selling it to, if Robinhood is preventing you (and your peers) from buying?
McDyver··on G7 nations committing billions more to fossil fuel than green energy
The current consumerist economy is based on scarcity.

Green energy (by definition, sustainable) should be anything but scarce, and therefore would allow "weaker" countries to be more self-reliant.

This will never be allowed by countries that want to keep their "G"-whatever denomination
