Matachines··on U.S. Files Criminal Charges Against Theranos’s Elizabeth Holmes, Ramesh Balwani
The craziest part of the justice system is how dependent on money it is.

I am in a weekly support group for people with the same offense category as me, sometimes crimes not as bad as mine. Most of the members in this group are working class - hourly jobs, no savings, no emergency funds, government lawyers. They mostly had to serve time, had to register as offenders, have strict stipulations.

Meanwhile I was able to borrow money from my parents, got a good lawyer, and all I have to do is check in with probation once a month for a few years.

Matachines··on Reddit just passed Facebook as #3 most popular website in US
What surprises be about reddit is that they get advertisers and ads while having one of the largest porn communities.

No one talks about this, and people are quick to say "Tumblr/4chan is just porn!", but not only is there a myriad of porn subreddits, many of them have OC content (people posting themselves), who thanks to reddit's new profile followers feature have a fanbase. One only needs to look at /r/sexsells (NSFW) to see this in action.

With the shutdown of Craigslist personals, people are (using and have been using) reddit for hookups as well. Crazy that they "get away" with the #1 killer of social media platform ad revenue.

Matachines··on Lisk: Blockchain development in JavaScript
Eric Elliott is a joke even in the JS community.
Matachines··on Four-year professional visas get green light in Thailand
It's cheap, safe, and tech nerds love Asian girls for some reason
Matachines··on Ask HN: How did you move from IT/software to something unrelated?
Salespeople aren't selling to you or me. They're selling to other companies.

Was there any point to this comment other than letting us know what you don't like?
Matachines··on The Circus Leaves Town: Ringling Bros and Barnum and Bailey Circus to Close
Nice blog post.
Matachines··on A small website mystery
Bc Julia Evans wrote it
Matachines··on Ask HN: Have you ever thought of leaving programming for something else?
Study history and/or industrial design even though I'm horrible in the latter.
Matachines··on Ask HN: Whatever happened to JavaScript build tool Fez?
The author probably got bored and since no one used it he pulled it down.

Most people will just stick the popular libraries even if they suck, so small ones die with the authors interest.

Matachines··on Ask HN: Tired of trying to catch the JavaScript train
Move to backend or another domain entirely like smart developers do.
Matachines··on Ask HN: Why hasn't Perl 6 taken off yet?
I know it's dumb but for some reason the large amounts of Rails people moving to Elixir bother me. I don't want the language to be synonymous with web devs :/
Matachines··on Delhi’s air is so toxic that schools are closing, expats are fleeing
you can't seriously believe indias rape problem is "normal" or that it's not an issue compared to other countries. It's an order of magnitude worse.
Matachines··on Ask HN: You've got one month, what's your challenge?
I've been reading the "primary" sources for stoicism, so Marcus Aurelius, Seneca, etc. the book the other commenter recommended is a good start and overview though.
Matachines··on Ask HN: You've got one month, what's your challenge?
Master stoicism and Deep Work.
Matachines··on I don’t like computers
Nothing wrong with being bored. Try just sitting there and think about things rather than pull out your phone as soon as real life is boring. Your attention span will thank you.
Matachines··on I don’t like computers
It's different when society and people expect you to have a mobile phone. It's not weird to not have one in 1975 because no one else did.
Matachines··on I don’t like computers
In my limited experience the people around my age (22) who hate modern computing are usually social outcasts that hang around in 4chan's technology board or similar forums.
Matachines··on Programming is boring
Programming is boring after five years of CRUD/"business"/"enterprise" apps. Unfortunately they make up the majority of the jobs out there but making the effort to get a more interesting job is worth it.
Matachines··on Don’t go to art school (2013)
We're gonna need a culture shift away from "higher education" being the only option for middle class kids. Go to any middle/upper middle class suburb and tell parents their kid doesn't need to go to college and you'll get laughed at.
Matachines··on Step-by-step tutorial to build a modern JavaScript stack from scratch
Not only do people do this to do proper work, but the major companies people look up to do and want to work at or emulate do. Hence the problem.

Webpack is weird in that it's lumped with task runners/"Make"-like programs but it actually it's a configurable and hackable version of the browser asset pipeline.

LeetCode also doesn't force you to read from STDIN :-) I find LeetCode fun and straight forward.
Matachines··on Step-by-step tutorial to build a modern JavaScript stack from scratch
I wonder what % of HN would be unemployed if companies moved away from crazy complex SPAs. Surely how crazy they get is a reason why many here have jobs.
Matachines··on Step-by-step tutorial to build a modern JavaScript stack from scratch
What's the author's credibility? I know it's free, but why should I give my time to read this compared to other resources?

I don't know how to say it without sounding like a dick, but the amount of long "learn web dev" resources by people who can't write well and whose only ethos is just being a programmer is ridiculous.

Pointless Mac vs PC debates are never off topic on internet forums :-)
Matachines··on ESPN Loses 621,000 Subscribers; Worst Month in Company History
> Coaches are complaining that the kids don't want to play a game they can't reset when it's not going well for them.

How is this not a bad thing? I certainly wouldn't want my son or daughter give up as soon as things don't work out. That kind of behavior spills into the rest of life, not just sports.

Matachines··on ESPN Loses 621,000 Subscribers; Worst Month in Company History
esports are only popular on the internet and your colleges' video game club. While they're no doubt getting bigger, they're a tiny niche and most regular people still think they're weird. Also they seem more popular in Europe and Asia.
Matachines··on Apple Sucks Now, Here’s a ThinkPad Buyer’s Guide
Not sure what you mean? I really hate the new Macbooks but I do like macOS and I'm quite productive and happy with it.

Aside from a Hackintosh my only choice is a maxed out 2015 one that should last me about five years, if not more, with my current usage. It's not the choice I wanted to make but I'm not getting a $2000+ laptop without any ports I can use without adapters.

Matachines··on Apple Sucks Now, Here’s a ThinkPad Buyer’s Guide
This is why I'm probably going to opt for a maxed out 2015 Macbook Pro. Yes, I know I'm paying for "old" hardware but I don't use VMs or compile anything heavy so it should last me a while. After selling my current one it should come out to about $1000 so not too bad.

I'm just too invested in macOS in terms of apps, comfortableness, muscle memory, etc. I actually really like it as well.
