Matachines··on Ask HN: What laptop should I get instead of a Macbook Pro?
Hm. Might get a maxed out refurbished 2015 Macbook, seems like it's around $500 cheaper.
Matachines··on Ask HN: What laptop should I get instead of a Macbook Pro?
Do you know if refurbished Macs commonly have scuff marks or other wear?
Matachines··on Soylent halts sales of its powder as customers keep getting sick
Every time Soylent is on HN people say this.

Why don't people understand? It's so simple: Soylent is for meals you don't care about but need. It's not a) the ONLY food you can eat or b) supposed to replace all meals.

I order a box of Soylent bottles every few weeks—they come in handy while working or for a quick breakfast or if I have little time and am hungry. I also cook meals with my girlfriend a few times a week and go out to dinner every weekend. Both things can exist at the same time.

It's just a nutritious drink you can drink at any time if you need to. If you want to make it most of our meals, sure go ahead. But no one says you must.

Matachines··on Apple’s new MacBook Pro kills off most of the ports you probably need
Heh, my "upgrade" planned for this year is going to be a maxed out 2015 Macbook. Hope it lasts forever.
Matachines··on MacBook Pro
I think I'll bite the bullet and get the non-Touch Pro and a USB Hub.
Matachines··on MacBook Pro
The only problem with the non-Touch Pro is the lack of ports :/ Otherwise I'd get one right now.
Matachines··on MacBook Pro
That's not GitHub but the Atom maintainers' commit style.
Matachines··on MacBook Pro
The non-Touch Pro is perfect... except for the lack of ports. If it had 4 USB-C and/or USB/HDMI/etc posts it'd be awesome.
Matachines··on MacBook Pro
A sorta-maxed out non-Touch 13" Pro looks perfect except the lack of ports :/
Matachines··on MacBook Pro
I was either happy/neutral about everything but the price... not sure what to do now. I'm just too used to macOS and don't feel like making the switch to Windows or Linux.
Matachines··on Isaac Asimov on How to Be Prolific
How about trying to actually do it? I agree self-help books are mostly fluff that can be said in half the length, but I do think "Deep Work" is a useful technique.

One problem I did have with the book was that Deep Work might not be useful for someone whose work is largely mechanical or mundane, though in that case I'd apply Deep Work to learn skills to into more interesting jobs if one wishes.

Matachines··on Noisy Coworkers And Other Sounds Are A Distraction In Workplace
There's sort of a silver bullet: Individual offices around an open area.

Want to work alone? Close door.

Want to work alone but be aware of things going on? Leave the door open.

Can't stand working alone? Go to the open area.

Matachines··on Isaac Asimov on How to Be Prolific
I stand by the idea proposed by Cal Newport that the best way to do great work is to do "Deep Work"—large (but not all day) amounts of no-distraction, in-the-zone work. Harder to do than ever, but when I can do it I'm amazed.
Matachines··on Noisy Coworkers And Other Sounds Are A Distraction In Workplace
Another thread where most commenters will advocate for remote work and/or private offices. I agree.

Dan Luu recently said this about Peopleware, which advocates for offices and is highly regarded:

> This book seemed convincing when I read it in college. It even had all sorts of studies backing up what they said. No deadlines is better than having deadlines. Offices are better than cubicles. Basically all devs I talk to agree with this stuff.

> But virtually every successful company is run the opposite way. Even Microsoft is remodeling buildings from individual offices to open plan layouts. Could it be that all of this stuff just doesn’t matter that much? If it really is that important, how come companies that are true believers, like Fog Creek, aren’t running roughshod over their competitors?

> This book agrees with my biases and I’d love for this book to be right, but the meta evidence makes me want to re-read this with a critical eye and look up primary sources.

What's HN opinions?

Matachines··on Material Design
I wish the web would be designed with Swiss style, typography-heavy design though not sure how viable that'd be
Matachines··on Umask setting is ignored by npm for some directories
The lack of activity in the issue is sadly not rare for npm.
Matachines··on A curated list of various freelancing websites
Because people who make "awesome X" and "curated" lists do it for the GitHub stars and just accept any suggestions/PRs without checking if they're good or not.
Matachines··on Apple giveth, and Apple taketh away – the Escape key
I'm really in need of a new Macbook and don't use Esc that much... but Karabiner/Seil don't support Sierra yet so I can't do Caps Lock -> Esc + Ctrl (please someone correct me if I'm wrong). That said, I have my own mechanical keyboard I use anyway so it's not that bad. I'll be the guinea pig for this new kind of model.

Here in HN we can all say "I use X for Esc!" but this is going to be a problem to the myriads of developers and regular people that don't know about these tricks.

Matachines··on Ask HN: If your economic necessities were taken care of, what would you work on?
Read a lot, study history, and program whatever I wish existed when possible.
Matachines··on A Taste of Haskell
Of course Elixir is more welcoming—the language is "practically" functional, easy, and made for building stuff. Haskell's purity and academic background is definitely a big impact on its culture.
Matachines··on Harvard Square Classic Cafe Algiers Closing Forever Sunday
They're just another place to do homework or work now. Not sure where people discuss things in real life nowadays.
Matachines··on Bill Gates: He eats Big Macs for lunch and schedules every minute of his day
FWIW cal doesn't say you should schedule ever minute perfectly, just that you should have a flexible plan of what you wanna do every hour (can include just chilling)
Matachines··on The Pill, the Condom, and the American Dream
fwiw my alma mater removed the math requirement for CS to make it "more accessible" to people
Matachines··on In defence of Douglas Crockford
And Ruby, and Python. Don't forget the guy that got fired from his job for making a "forking" joke at PyCon.
Matachines··on In defence of Douglas Crockford
It's happened in Ruby and Python as well—so if you hate it stay away from dynamic web languages with low entry levels.
Matachines··on Bpkg: package manager for bash
Was this comment necessary? No one cares what you think about the domain.
Matachines··on Work in Silicon Valley and Spooked About Trump? Canada Wants You
IDK about the rest but Sweden has definitely not encouraged good education in a while.
Matachines··on Coding as a Career Isn't Right for Me
Most programmers are happy enough to make their current salary and many work for less. Don't think it's gonna increase any time soon.
Matachines··on Silicon Valley and Black Coders: Howard University fights to join the tech boom
None of those races count as minorities in these types of arguments. Only blacks, latinos, and LGBT do.
Matachines··on JavaScript web apps considered valuable
Way too many C#/Java developers who used JS in the early 2000s and hated it still think it's the same language.
