Martinussen··on Cognition Labs Seeks $2B Valuation
> So far, the utility on existing codebases is less than zero.

I'm curious what definition of "Utility" you are going by here - at the most basic level of "smarter, more context-aware autocomplete", does it have zero or negative value to a developer? Would you disagree that even an experienced developer could save some amount of time, at the current state of the technology, even if only at the stages where you're just writing code you already have a pretty clear concept of in your head?

> No way to spot this if you don't know what you're looking for.

I would expect most people to at least ask for more clarification on random changes to `head` offsets, honestly - or any other diff there.

If they had access to just merge whatever with no oversight, I guess the blame is more on people using this in other projects without vetting their basic security of projects they fully, implicitly trust, though. As bad as pulling in "left-pad" in your password hashing lib at that point.

The "random binaries in the repo" part is also egregious, but more understandable. Still not something that should have gotten past another pair of eyes, IMHO.

Martinussen··on Xz/liblzma: Bash-stage Obfuscation Explained
How on earth did any of this make it through a code review and get merged in? It seems absurdly careless, unless I am missing something.
Martinussen··on Monolith – CLI tool for saving complete web pages as a single HTML file
Can't say I've used pocket, but I think the newsletter-saving (generated email addresses), open source/selfhostability, and api were differentiators that made me actually start using Omnivore - I wouldn't trust closed source and with premium options for something like this.
Martinussen··on Monolith – CLI tool for saving complete web pages as a single HTML file
I believe it saves a reader-mode version of whatever you feed it, by default? I also pull a copy into my Obsidian vault using the plugin/api, but it's easy to implement with the api if you don't want Obsidian too. Makes it very easy to refer to articles from notes later! (or just rip out everything except the part I cared about.)

I've saved shopping carts and logged-in pages regularly, so the markdown reader version in the apps should definitely be independent of the article/page itself being up.

Martinussen··on Monolith – CLI tool for saving complete web pages as a single HTML file
https://omnivore.app basically entirely filled that void in my life. 100% recommend.
Martinussen··on Fans quitting Spotify to save their love of music (2022)
Last I checked, I believe using the Spotify API for a player (or, explicitly called out, a music quiz app) is against their terms
Martinussen··on Alternative iOS App Stores Only Work for 'Grace Period' When Outside of EU
I suppose the question is if you have a "right to bear arms" or a "right to bear arms that shall be unhampered by the government of the USA" - and either way, you don't have a "right to 3rd party app stores" in this case, Apple has an obligation to provide a service to you (an EU citizen), without certain restrictions. That seems a lot more reasonable for applying no matter where you are at the time.
Martinussen··on Sergey Brin on Gemini 1.5 Pro (03/02/2024) [video]
Isn't that pretty consistently what studies show - that right-leaning individuals are less likely to act/communicate with empathy and compassion?
Martinussen··on WhatsApp Chats Will Soon Work with Other Encrypted Messaging Apps
You can already read Signal messages using the API directly, if you want to, so depending on how serious you take that issue, it has never been something you could be "sure" of.
Martinussen··on Men are hitting on my scheduling bot because it has a woman's name
Someone at work in a customer-facing role is less free to handle these things like they want to, potentially at the risk of very real consequences to their job. If you work at a bar, or a mechanic's shop, or in the grocery checkout, a customer throwing a fit and spitefully getting your boss/management involved can lead to anything from straight up losing your job to just being a "difficult" worker and not getting the shifts you need.

If the people are not total strangers, it's different, but approaching someone that didn't volunteer to be in the situation, and can't freely respond, is absolutely inappropriate a lot of the time - I'd argue, at least.

(Obviously, a good employer should help you feel protected and safe in situations like this - but we all know that is not a choice many people get to make for themselves)

Martinussen··on The 'arms race' between YouTube and ad blockers
I'm not proposing anything, just noting that Youtube ads are not providing a relevant direct incentive to a lot of creators. Obviously "keeping Youtube running" also matters to anyone using the platform as a part of making a living, but at least personally I feel like that is a different problem that needs to be approached from other angles.

Some amount of reinvention seems necessary, the cost model of video hosting (without just making it a public service) changes the maths a fair bit.

Martinussen··on The 'arms race' between YouTube and ad blockers
The creators I watch aren't making their income from YouTube, even when that is their only main platform. Patreon and video sponsorships through direct deals/ad networks are the bulk of it, in a lot of cases.
Martinussen··on Star neuroscientist may have manipulated data to support a major stroke trial
Less truthful, really. There are good reasons we've moved on to "died by suicide" instead of "committed suicide" by now.
Martinussen··on Henry Kissinger Has Died
That rule seems like it would lock you out of pretty much all modern technology pretty quickly, to be honest. What do you use for daily computer/mobile use? What white goods manufacturers do you go for? A company will make user-hostile decisions the second it knows (or thinks) it can get away with it with a profit - fully featured, long lasting, sensibly built hardware is, sadly, not actually good for business.
Martinussen··on ChatGPT with voice is now available to all free users
What you just wrote makes more sense applied to LLM output than podcasts! You'd just as easily argue that "radio" or "news" is all bad if you don't want to differentiate between different forms of expression and communication within a medium. (Which, obviously, would be silly)
Martinussen··on ChatGPT with voice is now available to all free users
Listen to better podcasts. :P
Martinussen··on LLMs by Hallucination Rate
Every mistake you don't catch as being wrong in your inner thoughts simply become a part of your subjective experience/existence until challenged again later, if not forever.
Martinussen··on Ask HN: Why hasn't an IMDB/Goodreads for podcasts emerged?
Books and movies predate the internet and discussion forums, podcasts are generally discovered near platforms that they use for communities already. Also, books/movies usually being published more properly (ids, canonical credits, companies behind, etc) is a more obvious "database", if you look past the ratings
Martinussen··on Stop EU Chat Control
As someone that worked in an EEA tech company when the GDPR was actually being implemented, it absolutely did a ton for improving how much focus there was on privacy and PII security. That has seemed to be true for the places I've worked since too, from what I've heard. Most companies still have no good process for data deletion or export, and I am fairly convinced it would be even more dire if people hadn't started preparing for the GDPR years ahead.
Martinussen··on WiFi without internet on a Southwest flight

Martinussen··on ‘Less than half’ fresh produce sold globally makes any profit
I believe the SSB (Statistics Norway) numbers are more like ~10% for food and non-alcoholic drinks [1], it depends a lot on what you look at. Culturally the Mediterraneans have a very different relationship to food - but looking at Eurostat, we're basically on the low end of average [2]?

(Also, the VAT reduction in light of the recent govt-assembled expert panel arguing for the exact opposite as one of the best ways of taxing high-income high-consumption households without hurting lower income groups is... fun.)

Are subsidies not inherently valuing something highly? Except with some safeguards to prevent "Well you're poor so why are you worth keeping alive". Maybe it's better to shift ag subsidies to things like food stamps/some form of UBI, but that would definitively be a prerequisite.
Martinussen··on iOS 17 is available today
As a counterpoint, it takes a lot less effort to keep a file preserved. A fire-and-flood-proof document storage solution would certainly be a lot more work for me than setting my google/govt. data up so people in my life get access to what they need.
Martinussen··on CatalaLang/catala: Programming language for law specification

Martinussen··on USA Today Owner Pauses AI Articles After Butchering Sports Coverage
To be fair, just because we can generate text well doesn't mean we're any closer to actually knowing how to influence people subtly like that. Anything that makes content can be used for vague general propaganda/lobbying, but impacting product-decision in a specific way? Seems as difficult as ever.
Martinussen··on ‘Broken’ solar panels manufactured to deter criminals in South Africa
I grew up in northern Norway and I've had 6 bikes stolen, two within the time it took to get groceries with it locked outside.
Martinussen··on Study: Inflammation drives social media use
If you think HN is less fake than Facebook as far as personas goes that is probably more about your Facebook feed - HN is more homogeneous, certainly, but you don't become cultured because you've build a country club and everyone puts on a fancy accents inside.

On a side note, HN is the place person matters more than anywhere I can think of except for YouTube. Is it possible you feel like that because it's closer to your person/ingroup?

Martinussen··on Study: Inflammation drives social media use
Seems like "a desire to be publicly accessible at all times" is the outlier as far as history goes, surely. Social media use isn't exactly a known positive indicator :b.
Martinussen··on We’re all just temporarily abled
We're talking about the set of people that actually weight lifting exercises, though, not the population.

Someone that goes for regular long walks is better off than a powerlifter, I doubt you would consider that a convincing argument against the gym.
