Martinussen··on Isitdoneyet.gg is a website I made to figure out if games are complete
> "This was the final update, thanks for playing my game, there will be no more updates"

So you're only going to call abandoned and/or end-of-support games "done"? Even if they were abandoned because there wasn't more that needed fixing/balancing, you're still using a definition I have never seen any other human being use. If it would be done at a given version if the dev just left, isn't any game that provides access to run any version better than "done"? (Minecraft, for example.)

For any multiplayer game this seems to just favour yearly release slop over actually good games with good teams behind them.

Martinussen··on Our decision on Cursor following its acquisition by SpaceX
How does Zed compare to the tab completion in Cursor ("Cursor-tab")? It's honestly the only reason I have stuck with cursor in spite of the UI/UX being worse every single time I update it. Can I get something equivalent or better from Zed or some vscode fork/extension now? Admittedly I haven't looked in a bit, but it's seemed like nobody really cared about this workflow when I've tried in the past.
Martinussen··on We Are Forking dotenvy into dotenv-ng
Or even simpler: why on earth are you using double quotes for a string if you don't want double-quote behaviour? Anything like this should just be in 'single quotes'... Any developer getting to "its parser changed a secret while reading it" and "By the time the bcrypt bug blocked SecretSpec," from basic shell semantics is frankly astonishing. I mean this on an organisational/team level, not as a personal attack on anyone, but the hubris is incredible to me.

This feels like the exact type of solution a badly prompted and poorly piloted AI tool manically follows to an absurd conclusion if you don't step in and tell it to do it the obvious and correct way instead of re-inventing the wheel.

(I would also argue most of the point of a .env file being what it is that you can source it in a shell? Does the author here have any sane argument for not using a yaml/json/whatever file and XKCD-927ing it instead? Is this not just introducing a flaw when `source .env` stops behaving like expected?)

Martinussen··on Beef and dairy drive 41% of biodiversity damage linked to global farmland
This seems to say that an individual going vegan would save an entire transatlantic (!) flight for their footprint every single year, and recommends it as one of the four most effective things one can do?
Martinussen··on In Japan, 'calf hair harassment' exposes gender-based appearance conflicts
> I think a lot of men would also say it's unattractive if women wore shorts with hairy legs.

Not actively attractive is one thing, but "unattractive" feels extreme. A sane person, man or woman, caring about the hairiness of someone else and if they're wearing shorts or not is absurd. Are rolled-up sleeves and t-shirts off limits if my arms are hairy too now? :b

Martinussen··on The Gargantuan Lie That Is Collapsing the Climate
Even though I agree that what the other commenter is saying is a fever dream, I do have to note that crops grow great in Norway and Sweden... so it's at least a little to do with temperature, surely.
Martinussen··on I won't read LLM authored fiction
You're thinking of _entertainment_, not art.
Martinussen··on The Three-Second Theft: Why AI Voice Fraud Outruns Every Defence
Just add video and a better voip endpoint to existing setups and you're already there. A lot of scams can be (and are) run by a small handful of people now. Phishing at scale with stuff like fake tracking links etc. is already fully automated by people in a ton of ways and can definitely handle some back-and-forth over sms/whatsapp/whatever.
Martinussen··on What `for x in y` hides from you – From Scratch Code
Is "hiding" in the sense that you just need to have read the docs or know how the language works at a pretty basic level really a problem, or even a negative? I would certainly say that the readability and clarity on the form of loop being used is a bigger win, either way.
Martinussen··on GPT‑Live
It's just... Very robotic and clearly generated, makes random inhuman pitch shifts, etc.. Very alien overall.
Martinussen··on GPT‑Live
This voice is awful, possibly one of the worst AI/computer voices I have heard in like two years now - what's up with that? Is this seriously the best a company burning this much money can do, and they consider this acceptable to release? Like two syllables in and my first response was to grimace and physically cringe. Does anyone here think this sounds good, or even just "fine enough"?

Do engineers that work on this for long periods of time stop seeing the forest for the trees and think this could be mistaken as human? I'm saying this as someone that assumes all narration/most VO work will be fully AI fairly soon (for better or worse.)...

Martinussen··on .garden TLD's change to a bad neighborhood
Unacceptable for who? It's definitely more than acceptable for a lot of people.
Martinussen··on Wikipedia Workers to Seek Union Recognition
Far from the richest by capita, average income, PPP average income, mean/median household wealth, etc., which feels like what we're actually talking about here. A lot of countries in the EU/Europe that would make the US look far worse, no?

Either way, no, if unions don't reduce how much people make and provide stronger worker's rights, protection from corporate abuse, workplace safety, collective bargaining for things like holidays, you can think it doesn't change your take-home at all and pretty undeniably see the benefits. How many weeks of legally mandated paid time off do you get, and how many additional days do you get on top of that as a median worker in the US? :b

Martinussen··on Wikipedia Workers in Britain set global first by seeking union recognition
You'd similarly factor in comparable medical insurance/ avg. out of pocket medical expenses, taxes etc. for a median income earner the other side then, right? At median income, does that really tilt the scales much when all is said and done?
Martinussen··on Wikipedia Workers in Britain set global first by seeking union recognition
As in you can subtract it from your taxable income, I assume. I think it's fairly normal (in this part of the world*).
Martinussen··on Continue has been acquired by Cursor
Doesn't that make using the MIT license a dark pattern by itself?
Martinussen··on Celebrities say they are being censored by TikTok after speaking out against ICE
I think you are heavily underestimating the level of contempt he has built towards Americans and the US in the last month or two. I don't think Europeans, certainly not Scandinavians, will forget this for decades. This isn't like some random normal boycott-type movement that goes viral, I legitimately think Americans are teetering on being persona non grata as a people unless they prove they've divorced themselves from the mess at home.

It might be manipulating people at home, but you're closer (still not close, obviously) to Russia than Sweden as far as a trustworthy business partner or ally now. We're suddenly not making any long term plans that rely on America or American companies where it's avoidable, I don't know if you understand how big of a shift that is.

Martinussen··on Open SWE: An open-source asynchronous coding agent
Data storage has gotten cheaper and more efficient/manageable every year for decades, yet people seem content with having less storage than a mid-range desktop from a decade and a half ago, split between their phone and laptop, and leaving everything else to the "> cloud" - I wouldn't be so sure we're going to see people reach for technological independence this time either.
Martinussen··on PHP 8.5 adds pipe operator
When you say chaining, do you mean autoboxing primitives? PHP can definitely do things like `foo()->bar()?->baz()`, but you'd have to wrap an array/string yourself instead of the methods being pulled from a `prototype` to use it there.
Martinussen··on Cursor 1.0
Cursor also does this.
Martinussen··on I can’t understand Apple’s Critical Alert policy (2023)
Sorry, maybe/probably should have clarified I meant a different medication - meant to comment more on the general utility.
Martinussen··on I can’t understand Apple’s Critical Alert policy (2023)
If I miss the dosing window by more than an hour or so it'll either ruin my sleep or ruin my day after lunch, I have responsibilities and can easily lose track of time for an hour or two while working or in meetings, so the iOS medication reminders are very useful to me personally, at least.

edit: though if I remember or see the initial reminder and log it, it obviously won't go off with sound. If it pings, I've basically always already forgotten.

If this is a genuine belief you have, I think you need to break out of your echo chambers a lot more.

Martinussen··on DOGE has 'god mode' access to government data
Calling a guy a pedophile repeatedly because you made yourself look stupid getting excited about your cool submarine and how awesome everyone will think you are when you save some kids wasn't really worth much money either. I don't think Musk has the self-control to think like that, honestly.
Martinussen··on JJ Cheat Sheet
That looks more like a git alias than a job for an entirely new tool, to me. How many of the core functions do you really need to cover before `jj` itself becomes redundant?
Martinussen··on ElevenReader
Doesn't apply to all situations, but "replace things that were done by humans" in arts can absolutely be a loss by itself. Making graphics/speech/video a commodity doesn't replace designers, voice actors, or directors, but we've definitely see it can directly harm them and the people that enjoy their work.

> can't find better things to do, such that it makes them poorer, or anti-social its a loss

I feel like this misses the point a bit - lost income/sustainability for artists is obviously a big issue we'll be facing, but looking for a performance indicator in an artistic endeavour doesn't really get you anywhere. There's more ways to value a painting than "what the market would pay" and "potential heat output as firewood", right?

Martinussen··on It's time to abandon the cargo cult metaphor
You... Might want to check what Mel Gibson has gotten up to over the years if that's your impression of the man. Not much of an edge case, and you're being pretty intentionally obtuse if you're arguing Ford or Gandhi are useful comparisons here.

Anyone promoting Bill Cosby the person is definitely doing something questionable, which is the relevant point.

Martinussen··on My Favorite Self-Hosted Apps Launched in 2024
I think flat rates either make you too expensive for a small/scrappy operation getting off the ground, or too cheap to be able to offer what a large client might want (without additional agreements). In practice, this feels like the space that individuals doing sysadmin/IT stuff for local businesses are covering to me, but with even more caveats.
Martinussen··on I'm quitting the Washington Post
Those blurbs all seem to pretty clearly indicate it's not an unbiased news reporting show? Do you legitimately feel "hear the news from our guests" after "news commentary and informed perspectives" is proof that they are trying to make you think it isn't a talk/discussion/opinion-centric show?
