Magnets··on Saudi Arabia Shuts Down About Half Its Oil Output After Drone Strikes
Drones will be a thing of the past. UK laws are already cracking down on recreational drones, once something major happens they will just completely ban them for unlicensed users.
Magnets··on Could Get Millions to Turn Factory into Condos, Is Not Selling
Looks like she is planning on renting to a commercial tenant.
Magnets··on Cern scientist: 'Physics built by men – not by invitation'
Too many of the people trying to solve the gender imbalance in STEM are ignoring the fact that girls and women just don't pick STEM (biology/maths excluded) at A-level or degree level and want to fix it by tipping the scales when it comes to hiring in the hope that will encourage more girls to follow STEM career and "fix" the problem instantly.

The problem isn't that women are overall disadvantaged when it comes to getting hired in STEM, it's that women are not choosing STEM careers.

You could argue that too many men in the workplace will put women off following that career, but I really doubt that is the only significant factor at play here.

Why would a male be advantaged in those fields?
Magnets··on Did I just waste 3 years?
But you are actually competing with the whole developed world. There may be localised tastes or patterns to follow but your competition is from the whole world.

Your market is the whole world too.

Magnets··on Amazon Dark Patterns
If a product is poorly packaged from the manufacturer or (more likely) poorly packaged by Amazon and that leads to a lot of people receiving a damaged product, then it is clearly beneficial to see that in the reviews before you purchase.

Or maybe the product just has poor QC, again, it should be allowed to show up in reviews.

If it's just a one-ff then it will be watered down by all of the other reviewers anyway

digitalocean charge $5/mo for 1TB. Downloading 200GB will cost you just over 440GB of your 1TB limit

Magnets··on I made my own VPN server in 15 minutes
Less so because there's fewer people using cloud providers as a VPN. And it will be one user per IP, where the VPN providers place many people behind 1 IP
Magnets··on Battle for the Internet
>Many consumers might actually just want news, social media, software updates, some streaming services and limited access to the open Internet. Yet, they are forced to pay for the rest of the traffic and infrastructure.

But it's a level playing field because all ISPs face the same problem.

Magnets··on Battle for the Internet

Magnets··on How to find a trustworthy VPN service
Whenever I see any article discussing which is the best VPN provider it's usually written by someone who is benefiting from the recommendation of a particular company.

This article is no different

They keep messing around with the UI and changing it so often while also breaking extensions.

If you remove those features why wouldn't I just use chrome? It's faster and has more consistent usability

Magnets··on Wealth isn’t created at the top, it is merely devoured there
>They would have to completely fuck up to lose even a tiny fraction of their userbase.

Look at Blackberry and Nokia. You don't necessarily have to fuck up, it can be you're simply not moving fast enough.

Flickr, Myspace, bebo, there are plenty of companies who were early and lost their advantage or went out of fashion.

Magnets··on The end of smartphone innovation
It doesn't mean there isn't any improvement. Phone cameras are getting so incredible now that you really don't need to carry a P&S and with things like HDR+, OIS, 4k video you'll get better results.

People have been saying that smartphones replaced cameras for years, but now they are not just a replacement but actually better.

There has still been innovation with dual cameras, finger print sensors, laser focus, better LED flash, USB type C and monthly Android security patches will probably encourage people to upgrade after they reach EoL for a device.

Magnets··on Set up a cheap cloud hosted adblocker in an hour for $2.50 a month

Magnets··on Amazon Go
Tesco started that back in the late 90s and Sainsburys also did it 5+ years ago, then Tesco seems to have had another go at it recently.

edit: Safeway was first, in 1997

The Camden store illustrates the progress Safeway has made in other directions too. As part of its customer friendliness, Safeway was the first of the major food multiples to introduce self-scanning, the system it calls Shop & Go.

Magnets··on Yahoo scanned customer emails for US intelligence
I guess they are using the same justification as GCHQ; they use tools to scan everything and a human doesn't actually read ("rifle through") the majority of material.

Is it still an invasion of privacy if a machine reads my emails? Google read my emails to check for spam.
