MafellUser··on The Secretary Problem
Most old council estates are privately owned now. Many newer ones are also being sold as shared ownership.
MafellUser··on Wet/Dry Vacuum Buying Guide (2019)
This is where Europe labelling and certification make more sense. L, M , H and H asbestos. Having a HEPA filter is like saying your clothes is 100% polyester, doesn't really say anything useful.
MafellUser··on UK's largest tunnel cutting head lowered into its London shaft
That's false, Blackwall tunnel is completely banned for non-motor traffic. The pedestrian path way is for emergency use only and it's blocked off at both ends. Going down there with a bike is suicidal and also prohibited. During my 7 years commute on the A2 I have never seen a single bicycle down the tunnel.

You sure you're not mistaken for Rotherhithe tunnel?

edit: I see you're referring to Greenwich tunnel. Fair points.

MafellUser··on Hyundai rolls out 27 heavy-duty hydrogen trucks in Germany
All good but you know that every single hydrogen car contains a generator that powers an electric motor, right?

If batteries take so much space how comes EVs have FRUNKs while no ICE does? Oh because there's no need for a massive engine block, center diff, etc.

If you want to beat the efficiency, why not have everything nuclear powered?

MafellUser··on Klipper – open-source 3D Printer firmware
The software (firmware) is great but the community especially over on Discord leaves a lot to be desired. They have this sanctimonious holier-than-thou attitude towards beginners and anyone dared to question their approach. Check out Thomas Sanladerer's saga with them, it's quite eye-opening.
MafellUser··on After bus fire, CT pulls electric fleet from service
Similar to a burning petrol bus.
MafellUser··on Ask HN: How to keep water-obsessed autistic child from wasting water?
In the UK you can install a remote stopcock, it's almost a DIY job:

MafellUser··on Coinbase does not list securities. End of story
Are Forex ETFs considered regulated or unregulated, in your view?
MafellUser··on Electric Cars – fuel duty and road tax: how to replace £35B annual revenue
Completely absence from this are the loss due to lower Benefit in Kind (BIK) for Electric vehicles, and First Year Allowances for EV purchases. Driving an EV means only paying 1-2% per year tax compared to 30-40% for a locally polluting vehicles. First Year allowances mean you claim back 100% of the cost of the EV to offset any taxable income.

These business rates mean owning an EV outright as a normal employee is very dumb. Would you rather pay £300 per month for a PCP on a Zoe, or £150 a month for a Taycan as a company car?

MafellUser··on Electric Cars – fuel duty and road tax: how to replace £35B annual revenue
On top of that, it is ILLEGAL to sell and install dumb EVSEs. Does not apply to third party resales but if you can't find someone to install it, it's a moot point.
MafellUser··on Electric Cars – fuel duty and road tax: how to replace £35B annual revenue
You will NEVER catch the perpetrator. Period. Also the cost of enforcement will quickly outpace any revenue gained, as council's parking enforcements has shown.

Even when caught says on CCTV, there's no guarantee you can find and fine the driver. There are over half a million uninsured cars on the UK streets at any time. Twice that many uninsured drivers. Even getting them to pay for insurance is hard enough, how difficult do you think it'd be to get them to pay £10k fine?

MafellUser··on Apple to Pay $50M Settlement over MacBook Butterfly Keyboard Lawsuit
Only for residents in 7 states in the USA, the lawyers take $15M from the $50M settlement. As usual they're the true winners.
MafellUser··on SIM Cards Are Going Away. Why That’s a Good Thing
In the UK for the networks that support eSim, to switch provider you only need to send 2 SMS's, the eSim will then be downloaded to your phone. After a few hours it's ready to go. You keep the same phone number (if you want).

This article from uSwich explains the advantages better than the article:

MafellUser··on Woman who lay dead in London flat for 2 years
While this is factual, the majority of Met police's funding comes from the Home office, which the Tory controls, and they've been in power since 2010.
MafellUser··on Woman who lay dead in London flat for 2 years
That's simply not true. Being very involved with Neighbourhood Watch and a CBV for the Met myself, I can tell you how many times residents reported drug dealings (with legitimate proofs and intel) vs the number of time the police actually did anything.

There are 4 PCSOs, 1 PS and 1 PO covering over 17,000 household where I live. Effective policing is simply not possible, drug related or not.

MafellUser··on In esports media, layoff season is in full swing
Could someone explain what the article means by "Endemic esports media outlets" and "Endemic news site"? I'm thoroughly confused.
MafellUser··on Tell HN: Banned from LinkedIn for Reporting Wickr Drug Spam
Sorry can't, not everyone lives in fantasy land like you do.
MafellUser··on Tell HN: Banned from LinkedIn for Reporting Wickr Drug Spam
OP's wording could have been better but you can understand he means images of illegal drugs. Very kind of you to nitpick this, how else could people have known?
MafellUser··on El Salvador's Bitcoin Buys Tracker
Did they interview the tourists and ask if tourists came because of the Bitcoin adoption?

Quoting an article where someone's confounding causation and correlation does not absolve you from the sin of committing the same.

MafellUser··on Wealthsimple to layoff 13% of staff amid ‘market volatility’
They sold off their robo investing in the UK not long ago. With the way they're focusing on crypto now, I'm glad I no longer have an account with them.
MafellUser··on UK Ends Subsidies for Electric Cars
Not possible unless you can prove German residency.
MafellUser··on UK Ends Subsidies for Electric Cars
He's right but it's only in optimal condition where you can get cheap rate electricity. Driving in London is very efficient for EVs, you can hit 5mpkWh with ease since traffic is so bad. To cover 100 miles you only need 20kWh, at 5p/kWh off peak charging it's £1/100 miles. Equivalent petrol/diesel at £1.9/l and 55mpg is about £15/100 miles.

For public charging the rate is several times more than 5p/kWh, equalising the numbers somewhat.

MafellUser··on Scotland starts renewed case for independence
The running joke of hardcore Remainers is to let Scotland leave the UK, join the Union and then allow the rest of UK to apply to unite with Scotland. That's the best of all worlds, everyone is unhappy except for bureaucrats who will have lifetimes employment to handle the negotiations.
MafellUser··on Ask HN: Do people want a LinkedIn alternative?
Very hard to moderate that. Personal vs professional can also be subjective. If you're an influencer, what's the difference? Should you then be banned from the platform?
MafellUser··on El Salvador's Bitcoin Buys Tracker
Correlation != causation
MafellUser··on Major crypto lender Celsius freezes withdrawals as markets tumble
Frankly that not too atypical to regular chartist's talk. Draw some lines on some charts and make up a whole story. To give the cryptoists some credit, there's no fundamentals in cryptos so they have to use the only other tools available aka tea leaves.
MafellUser··on [dead]
>>> It approached the pyre and grabbed the body, The Print reported. The elephant then trampled on her body again, and threw it away before fleeing.

>>> The funeral was completed a few hours later.

What a ghastly scene. If I'd attended that funeral I would have never been the same again.

MafellUser··on Low economic growth is a slow-burning crisis for Britain
Sure keep cherry picking examples to support your points. Allow me to cherry pick mine:

https://yougov.co.uk/topics/politics/articles-reports/2019/1...

In the UK the most important indicator of how you'll vote is your age.

MafellUser··on How Trustpilot Extorts Businesses
Can you fight fire with fire? Can't you spam trustpilot with 5 stars reviews for your own business? Can they delete all of the spams? If you don't pay them to get 'verified' then drown out any bad reviews with good ones. Looking at how garbage their spam filters are it's not impossible.
MafellUser··on Low economic growth is a slow-burning crisis for Britain
