MSKJ··on Grok bot is now in Tesla
I've found Grok in vehicle to have degraded. When it first launched it worked ok. I used it for very basic things like asking for definitions or some additional context when listening to audiobooks on my commute.

But after a while it wouldn't understand me properly, I'd have to kind of yell or try to change my pronunciation like an old school assistant which made the process very annoying.

Anyone else have a similar experience

The tools can look however the dev wants them to. The utility is for content. It is an aesthetic choice

Folded and unfolded will both be designed for 2 aspect ratios. 1 for Portrait and 1 for Landscape. Opening the fold and rotating 90 deg will give you the larger version while keeping the aspect ratio

MSKJ··on AI is hitting entry-level jobs hardest, Stanford study finds
I (and everyone else) had to take an ethics course in college to get my engineering degree, I think the course should include the value of coaching and passing on knowledge to the next generation.

Even from a profit stand point, we need to invest in the entry levels to get mid- senior levels

MSKJ··on Data centers raise nearby temperatures by up to 4 degrees in Phoenix
Interesting, as we increase our total global power consumption, losses in the form of heat will increase proportionally.

This is more of a zoning problem

MSKJ··on Smoking accessories are making a comeback
"The decrease in number of adults who currently exclusively smoke cigarettes by approximately 6.8 million persons was offset by the increase in the number who currently use e-cigarettes exclusively (approximately 7.2 million). This increase was primarily driven by increases among adults aged 18–24 and 25–44 years (approximately 2.3 million and 3.9 million, respectively), leading to no net change in overall current adult tobacco product use."

'Exclusively' smoke cigarettes is the key phrase there.

I'm sure use is way down over 60 years period, but my point was

1. I have noticed a recent uptick 2. It is not uncool anymore, so there is less hiding it and subsequently accessories are getting popular

MSKJ··on Smoking accessories are making a comeback
"Cigarettes (and tobacco) have never been less popular in America" where is the data for this?

I don't think its right. The author is not wrong, there has been a resurgence of smoking tobacco. Anecdotally, I see it a lot more pretty mush outside any bar, club, party. And not just vapes, cigarettes. It's cool again, as are fancy accessories for it

MSKJ··on New cars are getting 1.2cm longer and 0.5cm taller each year
Agreed on this point, everyone wants a subscription
MSKJ··on New cars are getting 1.2cm longer and 0.5cm taller each year
The thing is bigger car are proportionally safer. And the market likes bigger cars, so the consumers are voting for bigger cars.

In the markets where consumers prefer or need smaller cars, they are offered. E.g. Japan

MSKJ··on The "Disability Dongle": Why Silicon Valley Hates Me and You
This is a bit of fallacy of relative privation. No need to fix it all. We can all be considerate in the areas we have control over and as a society have basics like ramps etc.

MSKJ··on Ask HN: What changed in your life when you started meditating (and how)?
I also started with the Waking up introductory course. I took 10 min of my lunch break every work day and practiced, I wasn't so good on the weekends.

I am not sure if I can give definitive answers to all the ways how It's affected me, but I recognize more often when I've gone into autopilot

I read something that helped me keep going, can't remember the source so I'll paraphrase: Meditation is like showering. You have to keep doing it for the affects to stay

MSKJ··on Societal Impacts: Claude's values across models and languages
Claude has been frustrating for me also even with the tool/ pretend human approach.

If I pay someone to, say, bounce ideas off of I would expect their continued participation

E.g.

I make craft and was stuck on some shape idea for a thing (non standard). So I figured I'd throw it in Claude and see if it generates an idea I didn't think of

Me: Hey I'm making a thing what's a good shape for it?

Claude: blah blah, shape 1 or shape 2 etc.

Me: Nah don't like any of those

Claude: K cool, good luck

Me:...

It seem like their goal is to train your behavior by forcing you to interact with Claude in the "correct" way

MSKJ··on Richard Feynman and the Connection Machine (1989)
There's this stigma towards AI in certain things that I find interesting. In your case was the weirdness (the uncanny valley area) due to the AI using Feynman's voice? Would it still be weird if it used a different voice?

The AI generation in this case is a tool to convert text to voice, one of the best use cases of this technology IMO
