Lutzb··on Accidental Google Pixel Lock Screen Bypass
Reminds me of Orthogonal Defect Classification. Analyze defects for when they were introduced (during development, architectural design and so on) and what caused the introduction of the defect into the system in the first place.

You can also try readcd/readom. It's really helpful in reading badly damaged CD/CDRs.
Lutzb··on EU Passes Law to Switch iPhone to USB-C by End of 2024
This so much. This era was defined by vendor lock-in. Getting e.g. a dedicated car phone audio setup was tough decision, since you could not just change the phone.

I still have a box of old phones with custom chargers, headsets and data cables. The Nokia barrel plug (different sizes), the Siemens comb style connector, the Ericsson break away type connector, the Motorola two prong, the Bosch connector and some really weird LG/NEC/SAGEM plugs.

Good riddance.

Lutzb··on Testing a Cheap ExpressCard to NVMe SSD Adapter on My ThinkPad T430
I wish there was a nice screen replacement for the t430s but otherwise the form factor is just right.
Lutzb··on Converting coal power plants to nuclear gains steam
This is NOT all of Switzerlands radioactive waste. It is just the highly radioactive waste. See https://www.energyscope.ch/en/questions/what-will-switzerlan...

The medium to low radioactive waste is magnitudes higher and needs to be dealt with as well.

Lutzb··on Another court case fails to unlock the mystery of Bitcoin’s Satoshi Nakamoto
I am still wondering why Satoshi used a GMX.com address in the beginning. This address is from a German email service. Addresses with gmx.com domain were only available for paying customers. So at least there might be some trace there.

Lutzb··on Buddhism has found a new institutional home in the West: the corporation
You are using broad unsubstantiated statements to make your points:

> Buddhism explicitly denies the existence of gods.

Where does it state that? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basic_points_unifying_Therav%C... says nothing about the denial of the existence of gods.

Lutzb··on Buddhism has found a new institutional home in the West: the corporation
False. Even with a cursory understanding of buddhist tradition you should know that the many schools accept the existence of god-like beings, but differ on their influence of the buddhist practitioner.

You could start to increase your understanding by reading https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buddhist_deities or https://www.learnreligions.com/atheism-and-devotion-in-buddh...

Lutzb··on Assassin’s Creed Liberation delisted, unplayable even to owners starting Sept 1
Something similar happened with Rayman Jungle Run on Android Play Store. The license server is no longer running and as such the game cannot be started anymore. I took Ubisoft at least a year before they removed the software from Android Play Store. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pastagames...
Lutzb··on Symbian Source Code
I have a heavily used MC218 sitting next to me. I tinker around with it occasionally (after all it runs Linux), but any productive uses have long been replaced by other devices. The device was great for it's time and even I kept it alive for a lot longer, maybe until the first iPhone arrived. Nowadays it's limited by not having Bluetooth or WiFi. This makes connecting this device to anything really awkward. Also, in comparison to modern screens the LCD screen is very hard to read an needs good lighting conditions to shine.

I miss the form factor though. Typing this text on a virtual keyboard feels like something is amiss. A real keyboard IMHO just can't be replaced by an on screen keyboard.

Lutzb··on An approximation to determine the source of the WOW! Signal
The question is if we can direct the radiating of heat. So instead of an omnidirectional beacon it could be directed towards a target and as such reduce the probability of being detected.
Lutzb··on Netflix’s big power clash and rivalries behind the crash
Autoplaying previews has really made me averse to browsing Netflix for new shows. I mostly head directly to the content I want to see.
Lutzb··on Crypto Gaming Landlords Mad Players They Exploited Now Quitting
One point that I see rarely mentioned in analysis of NFT games is that in my experience every game has some kind of player engagement half-life. After a while the games get stale, new twists, takes on the original premise of the game are necessary to engage the player. Attrition is the consequence and most often other games from other companies innovate where the original failed to innovate.

It is beyond me why I would spend more real money on these games, than let's say a classic boxed game. But maybe I am getting old.

Lutzb··on Google Release Chrome OS Flex
I was wondering the same thing. So I tried it out with a Thinkpad T430s from 2013, Ivy Bridge. In preparation I've also updated the BIOS to the latest version from 2019 (2.76).

Right out of the box Crostini will not run. However adding kvm-intel.vmentry_l1d_flush=always to the kernel boot options enables Crostini.

Lutzb··on IBM Logo Manual (1983)
The Thinkpad IBM logo was created long before the current inhouse design team came up with that rule.

But you are right, there is official merch in the brand store that clearly doesn't follow the rule. https://logostore-globalid.us/ProductDetail.aspx?did=14234&p...

Lutzb··on A Tesla Model 3 hit a police car in Orlando, driver said she was ‘in Autopilot’
The issue they were afraid of back then was that some jurisdiction might force the company to enable law enforcement to extract data from the car.
Lutzb··on A Tesla Model 3 hit a police car in Orlando, driver said she was ‘in Autopilot’
I worked for one of the top 5 car manufacturer in the 2000s in the head unit development division. One mantra at the time was that the car should never implicate its driver. Marketing was afraid of the backlash. So we were required not to keep logs of e.g. speed, pedal positions, g forces and so on. The only exception was anything related to the convertible folding roof. So many people reported failure when it was most likely caused by opening it while accelerating to fast. So for this case the do not implicate rule was relaxed.

I am no longer working in this area, but I guess the do-not-implicate rule was dropped.

Lutzb··on The Story of Playdate
