I've seen a few markov chain bots which were hilarious. As another comment mentioned, they can also be used for automated moderation. I've also seen a few servers with a bot that lets you "level up" depending on how active you are
Lt_Riza_Hawkeye··on Amazon denies report of accepting Bitcoin as payment
Hey, FB employee here (views my own). I don't think Diem is necessarily in search of a problem:

- Other payment systems like PayPal/Venmo/Zelle are for P2P domestic use only - you can't send money cross-borders.

- Paypal/Venmo requires you to have a bank account. Diem doesn't, and so part of Diem's mission is to serve the un-banked.

- This is a little pedantic, but PayPal/Venmo/Zelle/Square Cash are closed ecosystems. You can't send money from one to the other, for example. Diem is a protocol that you can interact with using any wallet, not just Novi.

Not being paid to post this or anything. I just think Diem is not well advertised haha

> If a billionaire wants to blow their money on a risky bet, why should the SEC stop it?

It's not "their money" to blow. 80% of that money was borrowed from others and he now cannot afford to pay them back. Yes, the SEC should definitely care

Lt_Riza_Hawkeye··on Why I distrust Google Cloud more than than AWS or Azure
I can attest. I work at a similar megacorp with a very large megarepo. If you commit a change that breaks any kind of test, anywhere, that shit is getting reverted very rapidly. If you MUST make a breaking change, congradulations, you get to update all of your users code too.
Lt_Riza_Hawkeye··on Decompiling FlatBuffers case study: Facebook's GraphQL schema (2020)
This is nice work. I would guess the only reason it isn't documented publicly is so that it can be changed at any time, without having to wait for existing users to migrate. However, given the sheer volume of people running outdated android app versions, I suspect it will remain stable for quite some time. Thanks for posting this.

Lt_Riza_Hawkeye··on Show HN: League of Legends Build Orders by Genetic Algorithm
Did my best to generate a jinx build, with high HP recovery and no lategame armor penetration (and no armor/mr). I also chose no gap-close because of jinx's passive and w. It generated:

kraken -> boots -> rfc -> ie -> last whisper -> vamp scepter -> dominik -> bt

I'm surprised to see this even with high hp recovery - I asked for no armor pen, but it decided to build dominik's anyways, and it doesn't buy a vamp scepter until after 3.5 completed items. If I went this build, about 99% of my games would end before I got ie, everything after that matters a lot less, and so I'm surprised to see it push everything non-"core" (including the armor pen I didn't want) into the end of the build.

They can. Think of it like a torrent file and a webseed. You can freely use torrents to distribute your content, but if everyone who has ever downloaded it goes offline, any new downloaders will be stuck at 0% forever.

The only add on here is that you can pay some service in filecoin to keep seeding your torrent forever.

Lt_Riza_Hawkeye··on REST vs. GraphQL – A search for evidence on which is better
It makes perfect sense for facebook.

You write the moral equivelent of __attribute__((graphql)) on your code, and boom, you can query it. You want mutations? __attribute__((graphql_root_mutation)). If your object is stored in TAO, everything works perfect. You can add custom fields or even custom objects implemented in PHP that can do whatever the hell they want.

You never have to think about a database. And you barely even have to think about security if you're using pre-existing objects, the rules for which users should be allowed to see which objects are written in one centralized place and enforced everywhere in the codebase, graphql included.

Of course, it only works that well because there are multiple ~20-30 person teams maintaining that infrastructure. And GraphQL was designed with Facebook's infrastructure in mind.

Outside of Facebook, I cannot see myself using GraphQL for any reason.

Lt_Riza_Hawkeye··on Minimal safe Bash script template
No. I'm not sure what the "-" is doing in "${TERM-}", but if $TERM was for example set to "-z stringhere" then that would be interpreted as two arguments to "[[" instead of one, and would ensure that it always returns false, for example
Lt_Riza_Hawkeye··on Amazon EC2 Mac Instances
They do allow OSX to be run in a VM..... but only if the hypervisor is on Apple hardware :P

And under the new EULA they don't allow renting a VM, only a device in its entirety

> there doesn't seem to be any sort of XNU hacking community

Probably because (from what I've heard), even using xnu is extremely painful, let alone hacking on it.

And it's not like you can re-compile your changes to xnu back into a working MacOS machine

Lt_Riza_Hawkeye··on macOS Big Sur Update Bricking Some Older MacBook Pro Models
Average time between when a security bug is introduced in the linux kernel and when it detected is 5 years. [0] But because people don't update their shit, 99.9% of exploits in the wild involve bugs that were patched over a year ago. [0]

If apple fixed a security bug in big sur, I'd like to update sooner rather than find out in a CVE next month that I should have actually upgraded ASAP.

That said, waiting at least a few days to see if any problems shake out is probably a good idea.

Exactly. Not to mention younger engineers will probably work 24/7 for 12 weeks while constantly worrying they could be fired tomorrow because they didn't fix some bug fast enough.

Lt_Riza_Hawkeye··on Geany – A flyweight IDE
Yep - I find it very handy in vim (and yes, you can click on the tabs in vim too). Clicking and dragging selects things in visual mode, and you can also drag your tabs to reorder them.

Also works in tmux - you can drag your splits to resize them, or select a tmux "tab" to switch to it. You can also select text and then do things with it, like search back in the scrollback for other occurrences, or copy it to the system clipboard. Right click even brings up an in-cli context menu.

Lt_Riza_Hawkeye··on How to Allocate Memory (2016)
Don't forget MAP_GROWSDOWN

> MAP_GROWSDOWN

> This flag is used for stacks. It indicates to the kernel virtual memory system that the mapping should extend downward in memory. The return address is one page lower than the memory area that is actually created in the process's virtual address space. Touching an address in the "guard" page below the mapping will cause the mapping to grow by a page. This growth can be repeated until the mapping grows to within a page of the high end of the next lower mapping, at which point touching the "guard" page will result in a SIGSEGV signal.

Lt_Riza_Hawkeye··on The Beauty of COBOL (2018)

It is not if you use free source format, which most new cobol programming is done in. Fixed source format does require the columns specifically, free source format lets you start wherever on the line you want, and extend for however long of a line you would like, but comments start with *>

Lt_Riza_Hawkeye··on The Founding of Google Maps (2015)
AJAX's origins are actually really cool. It started before XmlHttpRequest. If I recall correctly, when the user took an action that required a server response, the javascript would make a 1px by 1px iframe and load it to a specific URL with the important information in the query parameters. The response would look something like this

    <html>
     <head>
      <script>
       someGlobalFunction({
        searchResults: [
         {"name": "Joseph Paul"},
         {"name": "Joe McCray"}
        ]
       });
      </script>
     </head>
    </html>
Then once the iframe was loaded, `someGlobalFunction` would handle the results and update the page.
Lt_Riza_Hawkeye··on Tethered Jailbreaks Are Back
I assume you make a new mach-o file that hasn't been signed by apple and try to exec into it. If it runs, definitely jailbroken. Obviously a jailbroken phone could load a kernel module that detects this and stops it from running in this specific case, leading to a cat and mouse game between jailbreak developers and these apps. iBooks tried this once.

>Nobody is telling people who use Java since version 1 that they need to upgrade code if they want to continue using the language. The code just works, and will continue to work as long as there are compilers for Java

This is the same with Python. Python 2 code will continue to work with python 2 interpreters, just as java 1 code will continue to work with java 1 JVMs and JDKs. But neither are being actively developed and Oracle will not even sell support for java 1, let alone release security updates.

Lt_Riza_Hawkeye··on 8chan goes dark after hardware provider discontinues service
>Internet hate forum

If 8chan is an internet hate forum, so is reddit. Yes, 8chan has little to no moderation. People go on 8chan and talk about whatever, the fact that there is hate speech somewhere in there, and it is allowed to stay there, doesn't mean the entire site is dedicated to hate speech. We don't say "Internet Cat Photo Forum" about reddit just because /r/aww exists.

There will always be places "providing providing a safe space for anonymized, like-minded individuals to congregate, espouse their basest thoughts and feelings." This is firmly a good thing. You can always hang out somewhere else if you don't prefer it. 8chan going down means nothing in the long run. One goes down another survives.
