LordLandon··on Tell HN: GitHub no longer supporting unauthenticated `git://`
I use pass[1] as my password manager, and pass-git-helper[2] to serve credentials from pass to git.

The way I see my password manager, is that its password store in itself is "something I have", while the password to it, is "something I know".

Hey, don't diss nano like that. Try alt+c, or ctrl+g. Looks like you didn't try looking for a solution either (=

First thing you should teach in a class like that is to teach them to fish for tricks in the manpages/docs rather handing them individual tricks throughout.

LordLandon··on 85% Firefox Users Use Add-ons, Only 33% Chrome Users Use Extensions
Since you're a chrome user, I'm not sure that you've heard of this, but firefox sync is amazing! Syncs history/bookmarks/tabs/settings/passwords across all your firefox instances, including firefox for android. I can read something on my phone, while on the bus, then get home and open the same tab on my computer or vice-versa. Or if setting up a new machine, I can add it to my sync profile, and it near instantly has all of my browsing history etc.

I feel that's much more useful than syncing extensions, as those can be machine dependant (i.e. i wouldn't want the same layout modifications with firefox on my tiny netbook screen that i do on my desktop)

LordLandon··on Obscurity: Does Changing Your SSH Port Lower Your Risk?
If you're running a multi-user server, with possibly malicious users, that's not a good idea. Ports <1024 can only be bound to by root; so if a valid user of the server can figure out how to crash sshd, he can run his own version on the same port >1024, and then all your users' password are belong to him.

LordLandon··on For what are the Windows A:\ and B:\ drives used?
Why? Westwood were probably the only game company that understood this problem, and shipped their games on two CDs (allies and soviets), even if the content was mostly identical, and could all easily fit on one, just so that two people could play at once.

Just to play devil's advocate, but wouldn't targetted ads be more preferable then, since they WOULD have a bearing on what you're looking at?

I think what could add value to this, if the focus was on taking a picture of yourself - from your laptop's webcam or something. Then you could do some basic facial recognition to align the pictures, centering the face, and slideshow that.

LordLandon··on I solved the embedded Chrome OS ad equation and won a Cr-48
If it's split into windows, not only do I have to hover over every tab to find the one that I want, but also repeat the process for every open window.

The alternative is sorting the tabs somehow, but that's more maintance than a middle click.

LordLandon··on I solved the embedded Chrome OS ad equation and won a Cr-48
When you have many tabs open in Chrome, the length of each tab shrinks so that they all fit in the bar. Smart positioning refers to, when you click a close button on one of the tabs, the rest don't expand to fill the remaining space until you move your mose away, so that the next tab's close button falls under your cursor in case you want to close it as well.
LordLandon··on I solved the embedded Chrome OS ad equation and won a Cr-48
I've been leaning back towards firefox recently due to how chrome handles large number of tabs: poorly. It'll squeeze them down to the point that they wont even show the favicon, making finding an open page annoying - compared to firefox, which has a minimum tab length, and scrolls the tab bar if it grows too large to fit.

The rest might be a personal prefference, but I rarely use the mouse to close tabs anyway, ctrl+w is faster, and I can hit that as many times as I want without moving the cursor anywhere. I also preffer the / and ' shortcuts firefox has.

LordLandon··on A Walk In The Cloud: My First Day With Google’s Chrome OS
There is a thanks-for-applying page; apparently, that's botched up error handling - that text box needs to have < 140 chars.
LordLandon··on First Day Review: The Google Chrome OS Cr-48 Notebook
Some thoughts:

It's a little odd that it wouldn't allow you to install Chrome extensions from outside of the market

The external harddrives probably DID work, and would show him images if he used something that required browsing for them

As much as I hate to admit it, he's right about iTunes. Who with an iP{{o,a}d,oop} would be able to use this thing alone as primary pc?

How do floating pop up type windows work? I.e. clicking the pop out button on google chat, or hulu

For a web-centric machine, those 3g plans seem a little towards the expensive side, with pretty low data allowances. But on the other hand, I don't really know how many bytes "regular browsing" accumulates in a month.

LordLandon··on First Day Review: The Google Chrome OS Cr-48 Notebook
The hardware doesn't seem very relevant for this pilot - the main point is Chrome OS. Because it's built on linux, an ARM port shouldn't be too much further than a recompile out of the way.
