LikesPwsh··on Pure Bash Bible (2018)
The weird defaults are partly down to the different requirements of scripting vs interactive terminal use.

The defaults of bash make more sense for terminal use than scripting.

Powershell is a bit further towards the scripting end of the spectrum- part of why it annoys people coming from bash.

Compiled languages would be at the scripting end.

LikesPwsh··on Fed raises rates 25 bps
Bps is also specifically a flat change rather than relative to the previous value.

E.g. If without bps if you have an interest rate of 2% and somebody states that it has increased by 10%, it's unclear whether they meant a result of 2.2% or 12%.

LikesPwsh··on Game tutorials should be easily skipped. Why is that so hard?
Try Legends of Runeterra for a less hostile card game experience.
LikesPwsh··on Ripple notches win in SEC case over XRP cryptocurrency
It's not possible to sustain a magic money box where everyone can put money in and get more out.

Many people get that far in their thinking, realise cryptocurrency is a bad investment, and leave it there.

LikesPwsh··on I Am Leaving
(UK) I got rid of signal when they dropped SMS support.

Using an alternative sms app that sometimes upgrades messages to signal was nearly zero friction.

Keeping an alternative messaging app for one contact is borderline-charity.

I'd do it to help with network effects if I wanted to support the company, but the attempt at crypto integration already cost them my good will.

LikesPwsh··on Amazon duped millions of consumers into enrolling in Prime, US FTC says
You can cancel it right away, it's just intentionally obfuscated.

The many layers of cancellation buttons with different layouts strongly suggest that they a/b test for maximum difficulty.

LikesPwsh··on US moves to block Microsoft's Activision takeover
It saves MS from attempting to reverse the decision in British courts, so probably net saving of human time and effort all things considered.
LikesPwsh··on Mercedes beats Tesla to autonomous driving in California
They could pay more to cover the externalities, and enjoy relatively empty roads.

Town centers will soon be inaccessible by car, so they'll still need public transport occasionally for that.

LikesPwsh··on Addressing the community about changes to our API
Home computers/mobiles with parental controls, for example.
LikesPwsh··on Had a call with Reddit to discuss pricing
Reddit power users are overrepresented as users of third party clients and old.

They have an outsized influence as content sharers/creators rather than consumer, so annoying them is worse for reddit than it might appear.

LikesPwsh··on The odd appeal of absurdly long YouTube videos
Hypothetically it could compress down to a few bytes. Just color and duration.

Given the number of videos that are a single static image plus audio surely YouTube has built in a special case for them.

LikesPwsh··on The loophole that made cars in America so big
Spending the extra money from increased fuel and vehicle sales taxes on public transport would be great for city dwellers in general.

Reduced minimum cost of living for the poor, less traffic for those who drive for a living or have no choice or are willing to pay for luxury.

Rural poor would struggle, they'd need support through another means.

I don't like the idea of extra tax complexity when it could just be an adjustment to headline rates though. Too much admin and potential for benefits cliffs.

LikesPwsh··on In Defense of No-Code’s Potential
Power Query does the same with its M language.

Recorded steps in the GUI generate code that can be manually edited.

LikesPwsh··on Lightweight SQLite Editor for Windows
My experience is that SSMS is slow to open. ADS is fast to open but otherwise slower and unreliable.

I still mostly use ADS for the git integration, file comparison, terminal, and file picker though.

SSMS only for those admin tasks where it has a nice GUI, or when ADS breaks in some way (happens a lot).

LikesPwsh··on SQL:2023 is finished: Here is what's new
Top n is even deprecated in mssql, in favor of top(n).
LikesPwsh··on Firefox rolls out Total Cookie Protection by default to more users
That's intentional.

Uncommon settings being exposed to websites makes fingerprinting much more reliable.

LikesPwsh··on UK Treasury trying to find a Head of Cyber Security for £55k
I'm not sure where you got those figures, but the NHS pay scales are public.

https://www.nhsemployers.org/articles/pay-scales-202223

Non-manager caps at ~£48k for most technical roles.

LikesPwsh··on Japan wants 85% of men to take paternity leave but they’re too scared to take it
Increased education requirements to not live in poverty is the #1 reason in my opinion.

When parents expected young children to perform unpaid manual labor the net cost of upbringing was negligible or even profitable.

Now many people only start earning at 21 or later, and aren't even able to support their parents at the point due to the huge size of mortgage and college loans.

LikesPwsh··on Unicode Roman Numerals and Screen Readers
Some people still use mm/dd/yy, or inches.

There's always going to be a painful tail of slow adapters with standards.

LikesPwsh··on There Were Half As Many Affordable Homes For Sale In 2022 As There Were In 2021
If letting was illegal the cost of housing would move to reflect that.

Possibly to the point where a mortgage would be cheaper and easier than a rental is currently.

Governments could set themselves up as a monopoly landlord for those people unable to afford even cheap homes.

LikesPwsh··on U.S. on Track to Add $19T in New Debt over 10 Years
I wouldn't take those bitcoin forecasts too seriously.

Some of them honestly believe that halving inflation doubles price no matter how many times you do it.

LikesPwsh··on Efficient and Compact Spreadsheet Formula Graphs
One data table per sheet and separating data from presentation is normal for experienced Excel users.

It's almost-required for Power Query.

LikesPwsh··on Watchdog and West Yorkshire police raid crypto ATM operators in UK first
How could someone apply aml/kyc without removing all the actual purpose of a crypto atm?

The haircut is so large on those machines that the only use cases at the moment are financial crimes.

LikesPwsh··on Ask HN: Why do games (as media) make so much money?
Casino apps are exactly that, and highly profitable
LikesPwsh··on Tax System in the Faroe Islands
The imbalance is that it's more like 2% of tax complexity but 80% (made up numbers) of time spent.

Assuming no submission is equivalent to a submission with earned income only (standard in Europe) would save an incredible amount of time.

LikesPwsh··on How we slowed the subway down
"redundant systems"
LikesPwsh··on Firefox 2022’s top features
uBlock Origin.

Ads on mobile are generally a big impact to user experience (small screen, data limits) so blocking them is a killer feature for Firefox android.
