LexGray··on Microsoft has laid off entire teams behind Virtual, Mixed Reality, and HoloLens
Just part of the standard OS install. Nobody notices bloat any more.
LexGray··on Is forced treatment for the mentally ill ever humane?
That question would be is forced denial of treatment for the mentally ill ever humane. I question how many mentally ill people on the street are there because they were given a choice to avoid treatment or if they were driven there by circumstances. The cognitive disruption of most mental health treatments would make most any sane person question their value versus quality of life.

I do agree that mental illness definitions are a problem. Even forcing treatment on just those who are a danger to society makes me leery given that hostile social posts are now a social danger.

LexGray··on While crypto bro scammed clients, reporters scammed readers
Spend some time on dating apps. I would estimate in a call center environment there is a high number of female employees running the those scams off a script. All sorts touting their investment opportunities to anybody desperate enough to listen.
LexGray··on The FBI alleges TikTok poses national security concerns
The main connection I believe is exploiting xenophobia with he goal of internet gatekeeping. There are always those wary of outside influences destroying local culture.

Still, even if they are the best at removing videos, they are also the best at breeding new issues which go viral before they are even recognized as a threat and siloing that content so only people vulnerable are exposed. A second possibility is that they may be creating a forum of disruptive content on purpose to keep people distracted with local issues. Additionally there are foreign agents, trolls acting from patriotic intent or even those who are paid, seeking to encourage problem activity or create anti-government movements.

LexGray··on Photoshop for Text
There are tons of filters people need today. There are no longer secretaries proofreading or lawyers reviewing given the get it done in an hour demands put on people. I would pay a ton for something that automatically fixes know what Twitter is angry about today so I don’t need to keep up on trends, be able to make sure language is gender neutral an unlikely to offend special interests, warn of internationally sensitive phrasing, reword anything that could be hate speech, warn when you are likely going to tick off the SEC. People are far too emotionally invested in what others say and it would be great if you could just send public text through a few filters in the name of not publicly embarrassing yourself. I should imaging a popup saying “that is dumb, illogical, and going to violate a TOS unless you change it like this” will shortly be a common popup instead of flags for review.

The surprise is not that it is coming, but that it hasn’t been a thing for years given how flammable the internet is.

LexGray··on PayPal’s updated acceptable use policy [pdf]
Good luck. I just tried... "Sorry, there's a problem."

Such a dark pattern making cancelation difficult.

LexGray··on PayPal’s updated acceptable use policy [pdf]
Zelle has different hurdles. I recently tried to pay someone and the maximum daily transaction with a single person was set at $500 with my bank unless there was some sort of "history". It took me 5 separate days of payment to accomplish what a single check could do. The identity and confirmation dialogues were exceptionally clear that the bank had no liability so I have no clue what their issue is considering what inflation is doing to the dollar.
LexGray··on Google is shutting down Stadia
Sounds like they need to make reporting dead simple. Put an alarm button on every badge reader. Hit the button. Pre-recorded “intruder who did not badge present. Everyone present please wait for security.” Then locks second internal door. Or even better just automate counting bodies vs badging on every entrance/exit. Lots of nfc/face recognition type technology to tell who is who.
LexGray··on Ask HN: Am I the only one who does not want IoT in their solar panel setup?
A little fuzzy AI and it will know your routine to the minute. It can guess what room you are in and what activity based on power usage alone. It is not only monitoring the sun, but how much power is left it can feed back into the grid.
LexGray··on Ask HN: Am I the only one who does not want IoT in their solar panel setup?
I would bring up all the things in this post in your advertising. Installation suitability reports about roof types. Functions without external configuration, off site monitoring, and shortened lifespan due to outdated software. The purchaser owns the equipment so not a permanent lease against the property.

Just creating awareness should drive a lot of business.

I think some variety of IOT is valuable, but it should have a web server backup that provides both html interface and raw data which does not require dedicated apps.

There should definitely be a disconnect from the grid option for the extended wind related power outages of the Northern California.

LexGray··on The U.S. military is growing concerned about UFOs. Should we worry?
Not like greed has a limit. When a measurable percentage of congress is invested in conspiracy theories seems like a good time to get a bigger cut of an even darker black box.
LexGray··on Show HN: Quake 1 ported to the Apple Watch
This seems like a good use of AI. Get some random good enough textures to bundle. Give me a lake of pixelated radioactive acid.
LexGray··on USB4 v2 is also 120 Gbps
Even easier. Just have the EU mandate that everybody will be required this year to support USB4 Gen4x2x2(v1) on all devices. This will solve everything!
LexGray··on Why the Windows Registry sucks technically (2010)
At least that used to be the macOS method. Once Apple moved most of their apps to the cloud there are constantly open databases pushing settings updates from device to device. Things often start breaking these days if you try to fix things through direct file manipulation.

With luck you might be able to find the correct terminal commands to disable services and fingers crossed they don't automatically restart themselves before you are done editing.

LexGray··on Apple Reports Third Quarter Results
There is iteration, but nothing like the scale and customer base which Apple can bring to the table.

I think Apple would just need to aim for a market that barely exists. Single person transport vehicles would be my guess. It would need a big name brand which emphasizes safety and privacy over noise and power.

There are gyroscope based motorcycles with roof shells which would be great for the average consumer which would be in line with their environmental goals. Combine that with a complete augmented reality surround experience and some sort of ridiculous safety features like multi-limb airbag deployment or emergency jet obstacle avoidance they are in a unique position to completely change personal transport.

Add in some alternate transport options which are not available at all which would require major corporation negotiating power. Short flights added in as an option dropping some wings to bypass traffic. Perhaps some sort of rail connection to hook into those single car tunnels or existing railway tracks. Open the railways for traffic each direction when not otherwise occupied. Perhaps an optional jet ski and snowmobile accessory. Make it buoyant so it never sinks like trashed scooters in the river.

I would imagine they would focus on ergonomics, smoothness of the ride and energy efficiency over power. All digital so lots of haptics. Light enough to take into an elevator to park in your apartment. Just flip a switch and the gyro makes it stand on one wheel to fit in an elevator. Imagine being disabled and it opens your front door and drops you off in your living room.

I should imagine they would combine some high resolution camera technology to easily snap photos in any direction of whatever is interesting, 5G cellular for live-streaming in vehicle with easy swapping between internal and external cameras, automated pickup so you could send your bike to the store for curbside pickup without going with it and taking control from home if necessary. Disable local control so can send it out to pick up the kids from school. Or send it to park when you have reached your destination and it pays for parking and comes back when you need it.

Perhaps OLED exterior so you can change the look on the fly. 360 degree camera coverage so you have no blind spots. Auto collision avoidance from any direction.

There is a huge wishlist out there and it is easy to brainstorm all sorts of things that small companies just could not pull off in any sort of scale. Production wise they already custom design all the phone manufacturing hardware which runs 24/7 and there is always the possibility of just acquiring what they need.

LexGray··on macOS screenshot tricks to impress your co-workers
Another option is when you press Command+Shift+5 select Options. From there select to Open in Preview. From then on any screenshot will open in preview automatically.
LexGray··on Apple, stop this nonsense and just put a decent camera in your laptops
Mostly by going with 5MP webcams in about 1mm thicker displays and wider bezels. Slightly pricier and uglier.

The hiccup of the latest Studio Display seems to imply there is a lack of collaboration with the device camera teams. Every year I hope Apple steps up as an otherwise excellent camera company and jacks up the price even more for better sensors across the board.

LexGray··on Apple, stop this nonsense and just put a decent camera in your laptops
The clip is an ugly solution, but still it seems better than any other I could think of off the top of my head:

- Wait to out until someone invents a unique light capture system in the future which meets expectations.

- Shoot the same image multiple times with multiple cameras and use ML to create a composite image of good quality.

- Shoot different quadrants with multiple cameras and stitch them together.

- Add a bump at the top edge of the screen to get the depth needed for multiple lenses and then a notch under the trackpad for the bump to fit into. The fact they have the huge bump on the iPhone Pro does indicate they are willing to compromise a bit on form factor for function and a notched trackpad would match them notched screen.

- Add a fragile spring loaded bump which pops out as the screen is opened.

- Add a fragile mechanical bump that needs to be lifted into place to enable the webcam.

- Put wide angle cameras in the bottom case for a reverse desktop view.

- Instead of an external clip bump the Apple up to the top edge for a magnetic QI charger built into the back of the screen (current solution without needing to carry a clip).

- Make the screen thicker and use the unused space for additional light weight battery capacity and/or some sort of ePaper scribble surface.

I hope they gather enough data from this clip experiment to justify experimenting with a compromise solution.

LexGray··on EU law will force Apple to blow open its entire hardware and software stack
My question is why are they only targeting very specific platforms. If they wanted to see true change they would target all platforms equally.

I challenge the EU to force all "gatekeepers" like the auto, health, banking and most of all start with government to also open their hardware and software stacks. Drink your own kool-aid.

LexGray··on I wasted $40k on a fantastic startup idea (2020)
Sounds like Yelp for drugs.

Your real profit would have been to follow the Yelp model to charge for placed ads and charge to manage reviews.

Just as Yelp gets a cut of online orders you could have partnered with mail order drug companies for a percentage to order directly.

If you wanted to get into really morally grey area do the doctor shopping too. Who prescribed what.

LexGray··on DuckDuckGo “down-rank sites associated with Russian disinformation”
Given the information controls since Vietnam we have been lucky so far. This may well have been triggered by regulatory grumblings and could be a sign of greater US involvement.

At least to me it feels similar to how big tech does weird things under gag orders.

I can guess once this is in place we can expect government mandated rationing with chips diverted to weapons.

LexGray··on I live in the country with the most expensive Apple products on the planet
From what I have heard the prices go up in Brazil and India are special cases because the governments mandate local parts and manufacturing. Their goal was never about cheaper electronics, rather to subsidize local expertise. The Apple cut is the same on a now more expensive item.

Those that smuggle devices often experience unhappiness about how they cannot get warranty repairs for foreign purchased phones because repairs must be made with more expensive locally manufactured parts and Apple refuses to eat the difference. I have heard there are papers that can be used to prove foreign phones can use foreign parts without fees, but the local shops/repair depots are unwilling/untrained to help process that paperwork (and the replacements need even more time to be imported).

Even when repairs were authorized shipping and parts issues would take weeks. And no home shipping because issues finding trustworthy delivery so often six hour drive to the store often to be refused service or have to drive six hours weeks later. I am sure Apple could smooth out these issues (and hopefully has) but a lot of the issues likely arose from being cautious to avoid extreme fines.

I would rate both those countries as near Russia on how fun it is to own an Apple product in need of repair. (Samsung I have heard does not have the same issues is the same region).

LexGray··on Germany aims to get 100% of energy from renewable sources by 2035
It seems last year one in five Russians were interested in asylum. Too bad the military likely avoids conscripting gays or domestic abuse victims or the Ukraine population would be increasing by every soldier sent in.

There is sort of a brother/sister relationship between the two countries and I suspect if the US agreed to float a basic income for a half a decade to defectors a good pamphlet drop on enemy troops could have them switching sides.

LexGray··on Germany aims to get 100% of energy from renewable sources by 2035
Maybe that is the end goal of this nonsense. Make Jan 6 look like a forgivable hiccup compared to loosing 200k armed conscripts. Suddenly Trump looks rational by comparison.

Importing gas from the US looks difficult given how polluting cargo ships are and the complete lack of capacity.

LexGray··on Russia's financial meltdown and the global dollar system
There is news Turkey is providing drones to Ukraine. Should this continue too long Ukraine may very quickly have the best armed military in the world.
LexGray··on Twitter based map of Russian troop movements
There is some indication that if Trump gets in for 2024 he has an eye on Mexico. https://mexicodailypost.com/2022/02/24/donald-trump-praises-...
LexGray··on Phone number has been used too many times
I was using a number with Uber Eats and one day they decided they didn't like my provider any more. Needless to say their service wasn't worth trying to figure out why they have a problem. I swear it feels like some sort of conspiracy to make sure major telcos get paid.
LexGray··on An update on AirTag and unwanted tracking
There would be the hazard that you can no longer say it was an accidental stalking if you use a professionally tampered with device. Given that there are a lot of iPhones out there even if your device doesn’t detect it your friend may ask what is up. Then law enforcement can use the AirTag serial number to track back to the account it is linked to.
LexGray··on Did HAL Commit Murder?
Also coming into play would be sovereignty in space. As HAL is not technically a citizen so would not fall under a national jurisdiction.

And good luck getting an investigator out to Jupiter to gather evidence for the prosecution.

LexGray··on App store bill sails out of Senate Judiciary Committee
That complex legislation is not going to happen because ad-tech has the money to stop it.

Facebook is right now taking a huge loss due to the fact the walled garden is working.

People compromise their privacy because they didn’t have a choice. Apple is providing that choice until you let Chrome only be installed from the Google store and web sites suddenly say “best with chrome”.
