Leszek··on Why “Just let it happen, it’ll be over soon” is a rape joke
The reasoning of "it's a rape joke because rapists say it" is flawed. Rapists could say plenty of other things (e.g. "shut up") which, if repeated, aren't considered to be rape jokes; and there are situations where "just let it happen, it’ll be over soon" could be said in a non-rape situation, e.g. smothering someone (or even something less serious, like getting a tattoo).

I'm not going to make a comment about whether or not I consider this to be a rape joke, but I wanted to comment on what I consider to be an incorrect leap in logic.

Leszek··on Amazon's full size PDF reader, the Kindle DX, is back
This might even be the one with full free 3G browsing, full stop. I believe I remember that being available on the K3 Keyboard and the DX.
Leszek··on Buttons with built-in loading indicators
Something like this, but with a progress bar instead of a generic loading thing, would also be very nice.
Leszek··on Reversal: Australian Govt picks ODF doc standard over Microsoft
Because some idiot may get the formulae wrong? I don't think there was an actual Excel bug recently, just PEBKAC errors.
Leszek··on Are Current Web Design Trends Pushing Us Back to 1999? (2011)
A lot of good points there, and a notable exception to Betteridge's law.
Leszek··on New Kinect will sense more detail, heartbeat and minuscule shifts
It's not explicitly measuring the time from emission to reception of individual pulses, that would be (pretty much) impossible with light. Instead, it sends out periodic pulses of light, and measures the phase offset of the lighting of resulting images.
Leszek··on The Firing Offense
To be fair, it's a bit of a creepy thing to do. Just because you _can_ do something, doesn't mean you _should_.
Leszek··on The feds are making it hurt in every way for Weev, but for what?
Because it's a human being treated inhumanely?
Leszek··on Using Dispatch Tables to Avoid Conditionals in JavaScript
I don't know, in this case, with a bit of reformatting the switch can look pretty similar:

    function processUserInput(command) {
        switch (command) {
            case "north":    movePlayer("north"); break;
            case "east":     movePlayer("east");  break;
            case "south":    movePlayer("south"); break;
            case "west":     movePlayer("west");  break;
            case "look":     describeLocation();  break;
            case "backpack": showBackpack();      break;
        }
    }
Although that's to be expected, a switch on a string value isn't that much different to a string lookup in an associative array.

Yeah, that's basically what I do too. No \v on trivial regexes, \v on ones where there's more than one or two groups.
Leszek··on Classic Nintendo Games are NP-Hard
It's not about the actual difficulty of the games, it's about what sort of problems can be encoded using the gameplay.

Leszek··on ‘Human computer’ Shakuntala Devi has died
So like GPGPU, but with specialised parts of the brain instead? That's pretty cool.

Leszek··on Ex-Prime Minister Baroness Thatcher dies, aged 87
I very curious what the funeral will be like -- I imagine there will have to be a hell of a lot of security to protect the body and attendees.
Leszek··on The End of an Icon
As much as I hate to disagree with Aza Raskin, this is possibly the worst example of icons becoming obscure. The floppy disk icon is hardly going anywhere; it's pretty much ubiquitous and universally recognised, despite having lost the original meaning behind it.

If anything, it's similar to how road signs describing trains still have a silhouette of an old-fashioned steam locomotive, even though these days they're hardly anywhere to be seen.

Arguably, that's actually a messed up E rather than a C.
Leszek··on Can We Stop Drawing Trees on Top of Skyscrapers?
I was replying specifically to the question in the comment asking: "What harsh conditions are there in the side of a building that don't exist in nature? ([...] it would be nice for him to specify)". Whether those specified conditions are actually too harsh or not is not for me to say, I don't grow trees and I don't analyse weather patterns on skyscrapers.

Also, assuming you meant "you" as in me rather than "you" as in "one": I am quite far away from being a native New Yorker, and I don't appreciate the implication that I am "extremely unsophisticated".

Leszek··on Can We Stop Drawing Trees on Top of Skyscrapers?
He lists several. Actually, most of the article is listing these conditions.

> It’s hot, cold, windy, the rain lashes at you, and the snow and sleet pelt you at high velocity.

> Wind is perhaps the most formidable force trees face at that elevation. Ever seen trees on the top of a mountain? Their trunks bow away from the prevailing winds.

> Next let’s add extreme heat and cold to the mix. [Long paragraph of explanation]. The surface of a leaf—especially in direct sunlight, as on the unshaded side of a skyscraper—can be many degrees hotter than the air, up to 14 degrees C in some species (nearly 26 degrees F).

Leszek··on Can you pick out a brand just by their button design?
Also the same. I could sort of recognise the Amazon one once I knew which one it was, but even then I wasn't 100% sure.
Leszek··on The Python yield keyword explained
One of the false assumptions you're making here is that CS == programming. There's a difference between being a civil engineer, where you have to be able to calculate loads on beams, and being a physicist, where you try to understand why beams behave the way they do.
Leszek··on The Python yield keyword explained

College is (most of the time) American for university.
