Aptos and Capitola are really nice areas for sure! But I don’t think they’ll be overrun any time soon as there’s nowhere to build :) and I agree, there is much more to California than the Bay Area. Across the bay there’s PG, Monterey, big sur. Further down you have SLO, Santa Barbara, Santa Monica, Laguna, San Clemente, …
I went from WD Red plus (SOHO, 5400rpm) to WD and Seagate data center drives because I wanted 18Tb drives and both the Exos and WD data center drives are significantly louder than the Red Plus. I was after density but if anyone really wants a NAS in a home environment, seriously consider consumer/smb drives or going with flash if you value silence.
There are still processes that benefit greatly from cpu advances. Something like compiling code, for instance. But even if this were the case, high end cpus like these can now be used with several gpus where a lesser cpu might be able to only feed n-1 gpus. Density is pretty important in data centers and elsewhere. Think ML researcher with 4 big gpus in their desktop
Yes, it was funny the first time I noticed the sizing in a sweatshirt of mine. I was a Medium in all countries listed but the single Asian country were it was considered an XL.
Agreed. Or if one lives near large research universities, they often sell off the equipment they no longer need for a solid deal. Sometimes they do sell computers, servers, monitors and such by the pallet, however, and I’m not sure anyone really needs a cluster that large at home haha
Was hired as a software engineer at a tiny company, in April of this year, that produces surveillance cameras. They had me building and repairing their cameras which involved a non-trivial amount of soldering. They never told me I was handling lead and I wouldn't have known if I wasn't a curious person but it turns out they thought lead-free solder "sucked" and wouldn't switch.
No so. You could run it on your laptop just like you do with your other process. Sonarr would simply automate what you have been doing manually. No media server necessary.
“external USB3 SSD... slowly” so which is it? Sata ports aren’t exactly faster than usb3. If you want speed you need pcie drives. Not sata. Thunderbolt is a great solution. Plus, my network storage sustains 10Gb networking. There are other avenues
I just traded in my 12in pro for this reason. However, I think a MacBook Air may be a better reading device because it will prop up the display at whatever angle you need it to be for comfortable reading, while remaining ultra portable or easily resting it on your lap or chest (if you like reading lying down).
Haven't seen NIPS in a while! Think they changed the name a few years ago to make searching for the conference from work a bit less likely to send you to a NSFW site. For anyone reading and wondering, it's NeurIPS.
If these server boards support thunderbolt AIC's, and I believe they might as my Threadripper Pro board does, daisy chaining them together could get you 40Gbps somewhat easily, if that is sufficient.
This would be truly great. I have been pushing back the task of itemizing all of my belongings into a spreadsheet in the event of a natural disaster/fire/theft and having an assistant that I could say, "I have this road bike I built" and have it look through my emails and gather all the components and associated costs, then add it to a spreadsheet, would be a boon to many people. Of course, having it do it automagically from my purchases would be even better.
Currently worried about this. My employer asked me to help the production team with some assembly of the product which involved a good amount of soldering. Turns out it’s leaded solder and the owner doesn’t believe in venting the solder smoke to the exterior of the building. The tiny fans used are a joke. I’m in software and won’t be doing this regularly but it’s still incredibly worrisome as I don’t see employees washing their hands after handling it so it could be everywhere.
This would be great. Google sent out an email not long ago that they were discontinuing nest cams. Mine still works great but soon will become a paperweight, otherwise.
As an avid cyclist who does both mountain and road cycling, it’s pretty cool to see the conversations going on in this thread. Also kinda challenging to not be a know-it-all
I discovered the difference in these two types of students much later than I would have liked: last year of college. I like you, felt like I really needed to understand the material to do well, and I did, but there were so many students at discussion sections and office hours with much shallower understandings who would perform better on exams and assignments. These students often ask questions like, “is it always the case…” looking for a hammer they can apply to all similar problems rather than trying to understand nuances. Learning how to get an A in the course is very different than learning the course material.
You’re right. I first discovered Gear Patrol many years ago and they featured some pretty cool products and I was a huge fan of the photography and aesthetic of the site. These days, I can’t help but notice just how often the same articles circulate the site and always with affiliate links. I have been visiting it less and less along with Uncrate.com (which did similar things).
Great news! Hoping to be able to hike and mountain bike the new trails in a few years. The trails around fort ord are more popular than ever and this should make it easier for people to have more space, if they want it.
Maybe this doesn’t happen to you but: my infuse app on my Apple TV constantly clears the cache because it gets full. This requires it to rescan my library before I have access to my media. Kind of a pain. Server side processing like with jelly fin would prevent this from happening. This is the reason I bounce back and forth between infuse and Plex on my Apple TV.
So many advertisements in the app. I use the browser on my phone and have tried, on a few occasions, the app and giving it a go, but am quickly deleting it after being bombarded with all the ads. They’re less pervasive and in your face on mobile web and I think I see fewer of them.
