KwisatzHaderack··on The California man who hid for 6 months in a secret room inside Circuit City
> can spritz some water in your face in toilets

I personally prefer spritzing my face with a faucet instead of a toilet.

I mean, does this _really_ count as being social? Even by nerd standards?
KwisatzHaderack··on Scientists rename genes to stop Microsoft Excel from misreading them as dates (2020)
So let me get this straight: Scientists would rather rename genes, than to simply use a tool other than MS Excel?
KwisatzHaderack··on Impostor Syndrome vs. the Dunning-Kruger Effect
The advice “don’t be too hard on yourself” only works on Imposter Syndrome. I don’t think this works on “Dunning-Kruger” though.
KwisatzHaderack··on My Birthday Gangbang a slutistical breakdown(NSFW)
Good for her.
KwisatzHaderack··on How Inuit Parents Teach Kids To Control Their Anger (2019)
I suspect this has a lot to do with the uncompromisingly dangerous and tenuous subsistence that is living in the Arctic. The inability to manage anger would be selected out as it would be detrimental to the survival of the tribe.
KwisatzHaderack··on Burger King turns hangovers into discounts with facial recognition
I don’t think a whopper is what people want when they have a hangover.
KwisatzHaderack··on China using largest known online disinformation operation to harass Americans
> Another post claimed that former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is “riddled with scandals.”

Not quite the example I would use as Chinese agents spreading “misinformation”.

KwisatzHaderack··on San Francisco Died, Again
> The world was eagerly, and somewhat justifiably, pondering the end of San Francisco in April 1906 after the almighty 7.9 magnitude quake

Not sure it’s a fair comparison between a massive earthquake and the anti-social problems in SF today. One is a once-in-a-lifetime natural disaster with a clear path forward (rebuild and repair). The other is largely man-made, with root causes still unaddressed and with no consensus on what the right solution even is.

KwisatzHaderack··on Goodbye, San Francisco
They also like to throw out the phrase “root causes” as an excuse to not to do anything now.
KwisatzHaderack··on The Mao-Kissinger Meeting of 1973
> sometimes used in West Taiwan

LOL. I was confused and thought you meant the Western part of Taiwan, which made no sense. But I get your joke now: West Taiwan = mainland China.

KwisatzHaderack··on The Mao-Kissinger Meeting of 1973
> the liberal/socialist government which was in power during it’s entire lifetime was so unstable and eventually collapsed because a significant proportion of the electorate continued voting for the bolsheviks

Seems to still be the case today: the far left fighting with the moderate left.

KwisatzHaderack··on A mystery buyer purchased entire California ghost town Eagle Mountain for $22.5M
Burning Man remote site?
KwisatzHaderack··on Yes, it's OK to be mad about crime in San Francisco
> Its not white kids in the marina that need to walk past piles of shit and needles

Cue Rob Henderson’s luxury beliefs theory: Many rich white liberals support policies that lead to crime/chaos because it signals their high status and the options it affords (ie. I’ll just move to my other house in Marin if SF gets too crazy)

KwisatzHaderack··on Grace Hopper on Late Night with David Letterman (1986) [video]
David Letterman is a real jerk. Watch his interview with John Waters where he treats him with disdain or when he creeps out Jennifer Aniston by licking her.
KwisatzHaderack··on A growing number of scientists are convinced the future influences the past
I feel like this assumes solipsism.

KwisatzHaderack··on IQ scores in the US have fallen for the first time in decades
I’m assuming you’re implying this has to do with immigration. Care to elaborate and/or back it up with citations?
KwisatzHaderack··on Half of Americans now believe that news organizations deliberately mislead them
Reminds me of a Richard Pryor joke: “Who you gonna believe? Me or your lying eyes?”

There’s been many times when news articles have been easily discredited by simply looking at the original source(video, image, research papers).

KwisatzHaderack··on Tell HN: DEI initiatives undermine the self esteem of PoC within a company
Not even joking, we should have affirmative action for ugly people. Everything they have they had to work twice as hard as attractive people for.
KwisatzHaderack··on Tell HN: DEI initiatives undermine the self esteem of PoC within a company
> If [Asian|Jewish] people (for example) are systemically [better at university] than white people as a group, it makes sense to [hold them to much higher standards than white people in university admissions].

Found the Harvard admissions officer.

KwisatzHaderack··on Tell HN: DEI initiatives undermine the self esteem of PoC within a company
> Asian people, if that is their only identifying class characteristic, are not discriminated against generally.

Harvard would like a word with you.

But in all seriousness, Asians face the discrimination of being perceived as foreign and “the other” more so compared to other racial minorities. So the claim that they generally don’t face discrimination is not true.

KwisatzHaderack··on Tell HN: DEI initiatives undermine the self esteem of PoC within a company
> and second, it undermines the importance of critical thinking and analysis in engineering.

I think this is the real harm being done here. Being trained to accept irrationality and poor judgment bleeds into engineering decisions.

KwisatzHaderack··on Crime App 'Citizen' Lays Off Dozens of Employees
Not everyone has the privilege of living in safe places like Mountain View. Please don’t diminish others concern for public safety as a “panic fetish tool”, especially for those of us who’ve been the victims of violent crimes.

> Whittle down your trust in your neighbors

Interestingly, being aware of the crime in my neighborhood (thanks to Citizen and NextDoor) has made me engage more with my neighbors.

> don’t advocate for different outcomes from your city

Where are you getting this from?

KwisatzHaderack··on Five mildly anti-Buddhist essays
> There is a dirty secret that basically everyone who spends time with meditation communities finds out. Which is this: people who let go of grasping as completely as you can—like, famous meditation teachers, or practitioners who have been at it for decades—still have problems. They are still neurotic and prideful. They still stress out about their social media accounts. They still engage in immoral behavior. While they might not report as much subjective suffering, they still act out in ways that objectively belie insecurity and dissatisfaction.

There was this documentary I saw (forgot the name) that had a zen master who was making fried dough and he was extremely neurotic. Made me wonder if the neurotic types are the ones who seek out Buddhism. The real laid-back types are already ‘Buddhas’, which ironically is why they don’t seek it out.

KwisatzHaderack··on How I survived a year in ‘the hole’ without losing my mind
> key insight that hit me was that that momentary break in my sense of security that morning, that's what the person who robbed me constantly lives in

Maybe for some, but for many it’s a job or hobby. Some actually enjoy it. I grew up in a rough neighborhood and know people bragging about robbing just for the thrill of it.

KwisatzHaderack··on Ask HN: What are the best books on the economic history of Japan?
Not a book but the Asianometry YouTube channel’s videos on Japan are excellent.
