KhalPanda··on Ask HN: Is it ok to make a list of female software devs available for hire?
It does make sense.

How does a curated list of women in tech available for hire help solve that? Won't both companies that pay and treat women fairly in line with men already be hiring them... and women already be choosing to work for them?

I think a gender-specific list of people available for hire isn't conducive to the actual goal. We need a way to change the culture of bigoted companies.

I agree a pro-active effort makes sense... just the question is: By doing what?

(Not trying to be difficult).

KhalPanda··on Ask HN: Is it ok to make a list of female software devs available for hire?
I don't see the importance in making a distinction. I can think of a very limited number of reasons a company would _specifically_ want to hire female devs? Why not hire the person best-suited regardless of gender?

...maybe I'm missing the point.

KhalPanda··on Docker is celebrating its 6th birthday with an easter egg
Normally I'd get your point, but it's untrusted code sandboxed inside a container...
KhalPanda··on Ask HN: Can Artificial Intelligence be used to mine Ethereum faster?
I'm not sure how that would work, without breaking the encryption the mining process relies on... but then it's not "faster", just "broken".
KhalPanda··on Ask HN: What happens to datacenter's servers once outdated?
> The seller personally delivered them in a van on a four hour drive

> ... after personally delivering a few of them several hours away.

Heh, and the cycle continues.

KhalPanda··on Redesigning GitHub Repository Page
I liked most of the changes, but it lost me with the final redesign. Three columns without much separating whitespace is quite jarring to follow. Maybe that would work better on a larger screen with some padding between the columns.

Fun exercise, anyway.

KhalPanda··on Ask HN: What AI Software Would You Pay for Today?
Saw this project the other day when looking through go resources, sounds like it's at least part-way to what you describe: https://github.com/photoprism/photoprism
KhalPanda··on Ask HN: Do you keep a personal knowledgebase? With What?
I use and love vimwiki[1].

I set my vimwiki directory to be in Dropbox, so it's safe/available on all my devices.

KhalPanda··on Show HN: Resume Worded – Write impactful resumes
At a guess, they're gleaned en-masse from the résumés of those working at 'prestigious' companies.

e.g. SWE at Google - "these résumé lines must be good!"

KhalPanda··on Ask HN: How often do you pull an all-nighter?
Never.

I think people that frequently pull all nighters (i.e. those claiming to do so multiple times per week) are probably missing the point that they'll get more work done with ~6 100% productive hours per day, than 18+ hours at fastly reduced productivity. It's not sustainable.

Yup, pretty much what I expected.

KhalPanda··on Org-Mode Is One of the Most Reasonable Markup Languages to Use for Text
I always liked the sound of org-mode, but as a long time vim user, I always found attempting to learn Emacs pretty jarring (I know it's just a matter of spending more time with it, but...).

For what it's worth, I found vimwiki pretty good for personal organisation/journalling.

KhalPanda··on Ask HN: Would you launch a startup with .xyz TLD?
Not unless your startup is called 'abc'.
KhalPanda··on Ask HN: What's it like working at a cannabis tech startup company?
Why would it be any different to working at a brewery or distillery?
KhalPanda··on Bitcoin network reaches 1 Exahash/s
That's a lot of power consumption.
KhalPanda··on The sad state of web app deployment
I quite like Node BB...
KhalPanda··on Ask HN: How do “introverted” entrepreneurs build a network?
Something I've been trying to tackle for myself recently.

I've been browsing some meets on meetup.com and intend on going to a few. Many people have reassured me that whilst I'm the introverted type and events like this make me somewhat anxious... a lot of people are the same. I'd say that in the tech/dev world, more people have some kind of social awkwardness than not. The people that immeditately gel and befriend everyone aren't common. Maybe I'm wrong. shrug

I've been making friends on interpals.net - I originally signed up looking to do a bit of a language exchange, but ended up talking to a bunch of people.

After that, I feel like I'm on a bit of a roll and it's just a case of continuing. It's quite refreshing to know I can make friends, it's almost becoming enjoyable. :)

- What's the worst that could happen?

- Take an interest in other people, ask them what they're working on, etc.

- You won't be the most introverted person at x event.

Good luck. :)

KhalPanda··on Tesla Energy
Thanks. Makes sense.
KhalPanda··on Tesla Energy
For those interested in investing and finance, I have a question.

Why would this news not cause Tesla's share price to go up?

It seems generally well-received (well, as much of an indicator as 812 points on HN is). Surely that's a good sign? Or did the announcement not live up to the hype, causing people to dump stock?

KhalPanda··on Ask HN: How do you keep track of your personal expenses?
I like ledger-cli.

Open source, command-line, double-entry accounting system that handles multiple currencies, stocks, recurring payments, etc with highly customizable reporting.

KhalPanda··on Twitch.tv account information leaked
I assume this was more of a notification, and hopefully there will be more of a 'post-mortem' yet to come.
KhalPanda··on Learning Vim while playing a game
Really? I'm right-handed, but don't have any trouble making any kind of key combinations at any speed with my left hand. Aren't most people (in tech, at least) ambidextrous when it comes to typing?
KhalPanda··on Aks HN:I'm searching for new clients for a WEB-Dev Company
In addition to kifler's comments, don't forget to service your existing clients. Repeat business is some of the easiest money you'll make. The client is already sold on you, you just need to continue to take care of them and upsell where applicable.

Also, you can't beat a referral from a trusted friend or colleague. Perhaps offer your existing clients x% off their next invoice for any success referrals, or figure out some similar affiliate scheme.

KhalPanda··on Ask HN: At what point should a startup pay for a personal cell phone?
Legalities aside (IANAL, not based in California, etc), can't you just reimburse employees for any extra expenses incurred outside of their tariff, rather than having an entire extra phone?

If an employee doesn't want to give their number out, just purchase a number that can be forwarded. Or if there is a large volume of company calls, I'd have thought you'd have been at a point financially where an extra phone is a trivial expense?

KhalPanda··on Ask HN: Windows VPS/dedicated server
Is Bizspark an option?

KhalPanda··on Ask HN: Who is your go-to web hosting company?
Even though it's obvious, it's considered good etiquette to disclose when you're using a referral link.

Also, you're on a new account. There's also another reply vouching for Vultr on a new account in this thread, albeit without a referral link.

Something smells.

If I were OP I wouldn't even consider vultr.

KhalPanda··on Sans Bullshit Sans
Scunthorpe*. References to that problem always greatly amuse me, I live literally down the road.
KhalPanda··on Clampdown on cold call companies unveiled by government
Same here. I love the Android feature that will display the company name (if it can find it/it's linked to a Google business listing) of whichever number is calling. Saves me Googling at least half the time.
KhalPanda··on Git-Stats – A local GitHub-like contributions calendar
I'm getting the same on Ubuntu.
KhalPanda··on Megaupload programmer goes to prison for one year
This just seems ridiculous to me. I may well get downvoted, but it needs saying. Why do 99% of the world's governments seem completely retarded when it comes to copyright laws?

How many tens of millions in legal resources were expended in bringing 'justice' here? And what does the outcome even matter? Good job, tens of millions down the drain for one year of an Estonian's time? The system would surely be better served if they just handed those millions to the actual copyright holders?

The only real victory (if that's what they'd like to call it) is having taken the site down in the first place, not that that did a single thing to kerb 'illegal' filesharing...

The industry has moved on and adapted just fine.
