Jsebast24··on Trump says US is officially renaming AI 'super intelligence'
And since it comes from Trump, we're all supposed to hate it.
Jsebast24··on Bernie Sanders proposes ban on artificial superintelligence after AI incidents
Artificial superintelligence scare is the new global warming scare.
Jsebast24··on Trump orders redesign of US aircraft carrier to use steam catapults for jets
- "Sir, we're under attack!"

- "Launch the F-18s, now!!"

- "Sorry Sir. The electronic catapults stopped working this morning and we need to wait for the supplier's technician to come with his proprietary software to evaluate the problem and order the parts."

Jsebast24··on US Senate panel votes to hold Fauci in contempt of Congress over Covid hearing
They interpreted that Fauci waived his Fifth Amendment right by delivering an opening statement. Also, a witness fully immune from federal prosecution (in this case by having a presidential pardon) cannot claim a risk of self-incrimination to avoid testifying.
Jsebast24··on Ask HN: Why does a messaging app need so many updates?
Maybe because of this human tendency to mess with and f*k up anything that works well and should be left alone.
Jsebast24··on Entrepreneurs don't have a special gene for risk, they come from families with m (2015)
looks like lapcat is a bot.
Jsebast24··on Entrepreneurs don't have a special gene for risk, they come from families with m (2015)
Another piece that tries to promote the idea that "following your dreams is dangerous" and that success has to do with privilege and not really with hard work. Beware of all these political ideologues trying to convince you that you are a born loser and there's nothing you can do about it.
Jsebast24··on Grok believes Trump won the 2020 US Election
Everything I mentioned is 100% fact, they're just not the facts you're interested in.
Jsebast24··on Grok believes Trump won the 2020 US Election
In the 2024 elections, I don't remember 5 or 6 swing states suspending the counting at 10:00 PM all at the same time and for no reason, expelling election observers from the building, patching glass windows of the counting areas with cardboard, countinuing counting behind closed doors all through the early morning, and suddenly finding hundreds of thousands of votes 99% all for Trump.
Jsebast24··on Why do people, like, say, 'like' so much? (2022)
Now do 'actually'.
Jsebast24··on USDA website blames "Radical Left Democrats" for shutdown
Only when they incite to commit a crime.
Jsebast24··on Virgin Births, Vegas Odds and Voter Fraud
It is a mistake to think of different religions as if they were different teams of the same sport.
Jsebast24··on In new level of stupid, RFK Jr.'s anti-vaccine advisors axe MMRV recommendation
Over 1 million babies killed by abortion every year. Thousands of sexual mutilations on teens every year in "sex reassignment" surgeries. But the MAGAs are the death cult. Sure.
Jsebast24··on A Complete Guide to Effective Incident Management
Incident Response is like Project Management: you have a long list of processes with acronyms and definitions that you are supposed to follow step by step if something happens. Oh, and the process can only be directed by someone certified to do it. You spend a lot of time and energy just to make sure you fill up all the blanks in the process —playing with the tool when you should be fixing the thing.
Jsebast24··on A Mathematician's Lament (2002) [pdf]
I once helped my math-hating niece with math. I was eager to go through her homework and show her how wonderful math is. Her homework: How do you call the curve that intersects this figure in this way? How do you call the angle that is shown in the other figure? ...etc. I said, "Is this a math class or an English class? Who gives a s*t about how a curve is named?" It turned out her math class was all like this. This is what she is being taught that mathematics is. I would hate it with a passion too if I had been taught that way.
Jsebast24··on Trump: It's Not Doable for AI Companies to Pay for All Copyrighted Input
Suppose you get a degree, say, in mechanical engineering. You later get paid for a job where you needed to apply lots of knowledge that you got from copyrighted textbooks. Is that copyright infringement?
Jsebast24··on Stone Age hunter-gatherers may have been surprisingly skilled seafarers
"They would have had to have navigated at least through part of the night, which would have required knowledge of the stars..." No sh*t. These people slept every night of their lives on the open dirt with nothing else to do but to look up at the light-uncontaminated sky.
Jsebast24··on Harvard's response to federal government letter demanding changes
That's right. Infringement of freedom and speech should be left in the hands of government funded institutions like Harvard.
Jsebast24··on A guide to using Signal for government workers
Why is the guide for "government workers" as in "federal government workers"? Why not just "a guide to use Signal"? Is this article intended to encourage federal government workers to use Signal to share official information related to their federal duties - where it would be untraceable and deletable? Because that would be...illegal.
Jsebast24··on Musk asks 'high-IQ revolutionaries' to work for no pay on new Trump project
"As a matter of fact, I'm preparing for a tough war. It will bring us neither money nor fame. Want to join?"
Jsebast24··on Why Is Light So Fast?
If the speed of causality were to suddenly change by whatever factor, would we notice it?
Jsebast24··on Why Is Light So Fast?
Einstein was not talking about light in his SR and GR theories. He was talking about the "speed" of light. As simple as that is, took me a long time to get it.
Jsebast24··on Global warming makes hurricanes stronger, but less frequent
Yep. That must be it.
Jsebast24··on Why refrigerators and other kitchen appliances break so easily now
Let's say you have these two options: buy a $4,000 fridge that can last 20 years or a $1,000 fridge that lasts 5 years. Think about it. With the $1,000/5 yrs option you'll get one new modern fridge every 5 years (add a bit more $ for inflation), or 4 brand-new in a 20 yrs period. If you go with the $4,000 option, you'll be stuck with the same equipment for 20 years.
Jsebast24··on Supreme Court rules ex-presidents have immunity for official acts
The deterrent for such action is that government officials are under the obligation to disobey orders that are unconstitutional. But that loyalty to the constitution doesn't seem to be strong anymore. High positions in the US government are now occupied by the kind of people who would follow those orders without hesitation.
Jsebast24··on Supreme Court rules ex-presidents have immunity for official acts
Add Ukraine.
Jsebast24··on U.S. surgeon general declares firearm violence a public health crisis
This isn't about public health or stopping violence. This is about disarming the people. Can't have full government control as long as the people are armed. Blame the gun, not the perpetrator.
Jsebast24··on Elon Musk does not grasp EU fears about disinformation on X, official says
Freedom of speech has never meant that you are not responsible for what you say. Bullying, death threats, slandering, etc. are not the same as expressing an opinion, an observation, or an idea. What these EU politicians want is to control the opinions an ideas that they don't approve; anything they see as a danger to their political agendas.
Jsebast24··on Elon Musk does not grasp EU fears about disinformation on X, official says
An EU politician wants to regulate freedom of speech, so you are free to say whatever you want as long as she is cool with it. Think about it - "regulated freedom of speech." That's an oxymoron. You either have freedom of speech or you don't.
Jsebast24··on Ask HN: What nonfiction books do you keep rereading?
