JosephRedfern··on Python Asyncio
Depending on the specifics, a threadpool proabably wouldn't help with a CPU bound task due to GIL limitations. `multiprocess.Pool` might (though process pools aren' without their overheads)
JosephRedfern··on PO-80 Record Factory
The photo of the record factory on that landing page weighs in at 9.84MB -- the margin probably goes towards AWS bandwidth costs!
JosephRedfern··on Tea – the toolkit that builds the Internet
Huh, turns out it was co-founded by Max Howell, author of Homebrew: https://medium.com/teaxyz/tea-brew-478a9e736638
JosephRedfern··on Apple Made $6.5B USD by No Longer Providing Accessories with New iPhones
> Both the earphones and chargers retail for $19 USD each and since these items are usually cheaper to produce, Apple is saving approximately $35 USD per device.

I'm curious as to where this $35 USD figure came from. I'd be very surprised if headphones/chargers only had a ~8% margin.

I'd (perhaps naively) guess that at Apple's scale, we'd be talking low single digits for wired headphones/chargers.

JosephRedfern··on Why is the Simula One so expensive?
Very interesting. Thank you!
JosephRedfern··on Why is the Simula One so expensive?
I am curious -- why the 1:1 aspect ratio/FoV? A quick Google suggests the human eye is more like 5:3 (though vary variable).

JosephRedfern··on Europe's all-time heat record set in Sicily at nearly 120 degrees
It’s a single byte of information, maybe 4 at a push. It doesn’t take much to include and avoids a lot of ambiguity.
JosephRedfern··on Europe's all-time heat record set in Sicily at nearly 120 degrees
Fair enough. I’m just of the opinion that a single byte of extra data (assuming ASCII) conveys an awful lot of contextual information, and can see few reasons to exclude it.
JosephRedfern··on Europe's all-time heat record set in Sicily at nearly 120 degrees
> The real question I have is ... who really cares

Me, when the term “degrees” is used without further clarification.

JosephRedfern··on Ask HN: How do you track comment threads in HN?
I use a service called HN Notify to get email notifications when one of my comments has been replied to. It seems to work quite well. https://hnnotify.xyz

(To the author of HN Notify: if you're reading this, thank you!)

JosephRedfern··on Ask HN: Is this the most quoted quote on HN?
"...you can already build such a system yourself quite trivially by getting an FTP account, mounting it locally with curlftpfs, and then using SVN or CVS on the mounted filesystem."
JosephRedfern··on Stockfish 14
I guess a basic implementation might compare the moves performed by the player under evaluation against the move that an engine would suggest?

Presumably an excellent player might often make the same moves as an engine, so this measure alone isn't going to be perfect. But it could be a starting point. You might also look at the player's historical performance and watch for suspicious changes, or perhaps look for patterns in the time taken to play the move?

JosephRedfern··on Ask HN: What's your sleeping setup(bed/pillows/sheets)?
I have a Baavet woollen duvet (https://www.baavet.co.uk/), and I love it. It’s made not far from me, and regulates heat really well. Less of a fan of the pillows but can’t recommend the duvet enough.
JosephRedfern··on Mars Helicopter Lands Safely After Serious In-Flight Anomaly
It does sound like something you’d expect unit and integration tests to catch, but I am not sure that necessitates the use of off the shelf libraries?

In the context of a space helicopter, I’d guess that deep understanding and ownership of each software component is super important when you’re likely to have to support a debug it from millions of miles away. At this scale, and in this context, doesn’t “rolling your own” critical components, in some cases, make sense?

JosephRedfern··on Google have declared Droidscript is malware
Drozer does (did?) this, except with Python rather than JS. https://github.com/FSecureLABS/drozer
JosephRedfern··on AMA: Ivan Kutskir, creator of Photopea
TIL! Thanks for the explainer.
JosephRedfern··on AMA: Ivan Kutskir, creator of Photopea
Depends where you are. In the UK and much of the EU it’s a pension, as far as I know.

Either way, isn’t this mostly semantics? My point is that one persons priorities doesn’t necessarily match with another’s.

JosephRedfern··on AMA: Ivan Kutskir, creator of Photopea
Indeed, it sort of assumes that working at FAANG with a pension plan and 200k+ is what the author should be striving for (the objectively better option), and I’m not sure if that’s accurate.

While there are obvious benefits to FAANGing, there’s also a lot to be said for working for a smaller team, or even yourself. Money isn’t the soul (or even main) motivator for a lot of people.

JosephRedfern··on Archive Team: A Smattering of Tweets
In this context, an item appears to be a multi-gigabyte "megawarc" archive, rather than an individual tweet.
JosephRedfern··on VPN over SSH? The Socks Proxy
This title was pretty confusing. I assumed it meant running a VPN connection over SSH (for instance, by tunnelling).

This was a common technique in my halls of residence as an undergraduate -- tunnel OpenVPN over SSH, plug in an secondary Ethernet card to your computer, then bridge the virtual adapter and the new Ethernet adapter. You could then plug in your Xbox/PlayStation into the ethernet adapter and bypass the rather strict filtering that was in place.

JosephRedfern··on Suez Canal says traffic in channel resumes after stranded ship refloated
Lots of articles quote a $XXX billion dollars per day figure, but those numbers are normally for "worth of goods delayed" which, while interesting, doesn't tell the story to me.

Are there any estimates as to the actual cost of this "mishap", due to e.g. spoilage, financial/contractual repercussions of late deliveries, personnel/fuel costs?

JosephRedfern··on The Python Package Index is now a GitHub secret scanning integrator
Though this has been true for a while, it's not what this announcement is about. This is specifically announcing automated scanning and reporting of PyPI keys, which if exposed, could allow a bad actor to distribute compromised Python packages via PyPi (e.g. pip)
JosephRedfern··on Result from LHCb experiment challenges the Standard Model
The title of the submission no longer seems to refer directly to the content of the article. If the feeling is that the article is dumbed down too much (as some of the comments suggest), could the URL also be changed? Maybe the UKRI press release, or CERN update? https://www.ukri.org/news/result-from-lhcb-experiment-challe... https://lhcb-public.web.cern.ch/Welcome.html#RK2021
JosephRedfern··on Tesla orders its first 8k-ton Cybertruck casting machine
I don't know anything about car design, but always assaumed that crumple zones mostly protected passengers rather than pedestrians. Is that not the case?
JosephRedfern··on Gitlab.com was experiencing elevated error rates for Git, Web, and API
Except he doesn't, because GitLab isn't owned by Microsoft.
