Joona··on YouTube's paid subscription offering takes shape
It's great, but very late. I'm unsure about the pricing - $10 is very pricey (I pay ~$20 for internet). I would've /thought/ about it if it was $5, though, to be fair, I'm not a huge Youtube user.
Joona··on YouTube announces ad-free version for a monthly fee
It's about damn time. I hope the pricing will be reasonable, and that it will also remove all those "recommended for you" videos... Though, that sounds very unlikely.

Joona··on HN Cheaters: Catch me if you can
So how do you fix it? I don't really see another way to rank large amounts of stories other than points. Sure, you can try to detect cheating, but you want a minimal amount of false positives, too.

Edit: missing word

Joona··on VP9: Faster, better, buffer-free YouTube videos
It doesn't do anything for me, at least.
Joona··on How many people read HN?
I do love the comments, but I rarely have anything to add, so I don't really need an account. :)
Joona··on YouTube puts the final nail in the loudness wars' coffin
Definitely. It allows people to discover more videos without creating the annoyance of having to change volume for every video.
Joona··on How many people read HN?
Yeah. The main attraction of HN is the links. Comments are usually nice to read, but I rarely have much to add to the discussion.
Joona··on YouTube puts the final nail in the loudness wars' coffin
Good. I absolutely hate videos that are so low volume that I have to turn Youtube up to 100%, and then adjust volume in Windows too, to hear anything. And then imagine finding one of the louder videos next.

I've tried to give people advice on volume levels, but it feels like no one is willing to do it. Hopefully Twitch will do something similar soon, too.

Joona··on Ask HN: What do you think the biggest trends will be in 2015-2018?
I agree. MMOs used to fill this purpose for me, but recently they have been becoming less popular, with games like LoL taking over with rounds lasting <1 hour, after which you never see the players again.
Joona··on Ask HN: What do you think the biggest trends will be in 2015-2018?
eSports. There was a large CS:GO/LoL/SC2 tournament last weekend, where CS:GO gathered over 1 million concurrent viewers during finals (last tournament had 460K!). While LoL has been a big player for a while, and probably continues to be in Asia, CS:GO is growing rapidly in the west.
Joona··on Google Adds Song Lyrics to Top of Search Results,Points Searchers to Google Play
Finland too. Might be US-only?
Joona··on Ask HN: What would you buy school kids to help get them hacking and tinkering
If they have computers, or if you can get them ones, Minecraft is a good idea. Highly moddable, in multiple languages, huge communities and Redstone! Plus, it's fun.
Joona··on Euro ministers ditch plan to ban roaming charges
Why?! According to Wikipedia[1] there's been a transitional period since 2012 (for data transfer). I can not see any downsides to banning roaming charges (within EU).

Joona··on PayPal has ceased processing MEGA customer payments
What other, user-friendly payment providers are there for MEGA to use?

Joona··on YouTube: 1B Viewers, No Profit
I mean the (re-)encoding, not the resolution.
Joona··on YouTube: 1B Viewers, No Profit
Patreon-style payments are what I meant by donations, but I guess people just won't trust Google enough for that.
Joona··on YouTube: 1B Viewers, No Profit
Why does Youtube not have pay-to-watch channels, or just the ability to "donate" to channels? This is a huge deal on Twitch (channels have thousands of paying "subscribers").
Joona··on YouTube: 1B Viewers, No Profit
Definitely. They try to compress the videos as much as they can, load comments only if you scroll down etc.
Joona··on YouTube: 1B Viewers, No Profit
And the video quality is (still) terrible, or possibly even getting worse.
Joona··on YouTube: 1B Viewers, No Profit
There's this: https://www.youtube.com/feed/subscriptions Which displays the videos the channels your subscribe to have uploaded (newest first).
Joona··on Virtual Reality (VR) headsets and it's health risks
I got motion sickness from Rift DK2. The low resolution was the most noticeable thing, so I think it's a combination of things. Plus, some people get motion sickness, some don't.
Joona··on Help Me HN: I am getting overwhelmed
Do you direct users there for troubleshooting etc?
Joona··on Help Me HN: I am getting overwhelmed
Do you have a forum for the users? The amount of help your users can provide to each other is massive.
Joona··on Alt-C: A neat little app to copy text between your device and your PC
I actually thought about making an app like this. Glad someone made it! Any plans to include small file transfers (like photos)?
Joona··on How one man made 22 games in 22 years, mostly from his basement
Touhou is amazing. I don't really care for the games, but the community around it is huge and creative. ZUN's music is great, but the community also creates their own versions, in so many different genres.
Joona··on Show HN: FPV Drone/Quadcopter Racing League
Well, I'm not really sure what it is, but sounds exciting. You should add some pictures and explanation on what you are doing.
Joona··on [dead]
Well, in Team Fortress 2 you kind of do that... with deaths. You get a freezecam shot when you are killed, and "Press X to save this moment!", which when you quit the game, gives you Steam's picture uploading menu where you can name it etc.
Joona··on Apple CEO Tim Cook challenges Obama with impassioned stand on privacy
I think it's mainly about telling the readers who Tim Cook is. The name doesn't ring a bell for many, but when you refer to news about him, it's a bit easier to remember.
Joona··on Ask HN: Do you hate iTunes?
Can't say I hate it, I just had a bad experience with it yesterday. I wanted to buy an album, that's only on sale on iTunes. The following happened:

I could not buy it on the web - I have to download the program!
The .exe I was given did not work on my PC - I needed the 64bit one, which was hidden in some support article
In the setup I selected English, but the program launched in Spanish instead
The program froze when I changed the language
Nowhere could I see what format/quality the music would be
I did not end up buying that album.
