I'm an application developer that does a little front-end work as well. Currently working for a small university's Educational Technology department and doing freelance work on the side.

I mainly do Ruby on Rails work but I've also dabbled in Node.js and Google App Engine (Python). I'm currently learning Elm and Elixir.

I could be wrong but I think all of this is AI generated. The images, the translation, and I think even the voice/audio
JohnKacz··on Free Public Domain Audiobooks
I just wanted to say thank you for your work. I’ve used m4b-tool and some other projects that use it as a dependency and I am glad to be reminded of tone. It was just getting started last I looked at the project.

Love it. This is now my convention. So it's at least TWO people in a random internet forum!
JohnKacz··on Developers spend most of their time figuring the system out
Forgive my possible laziness in searching, but do you by chance have links to some of the studies you reference?
JohnKacz··on Ask HN: Why is there so little debate about the attack on Vodafone Portugal?
I think GP is implying newly created accounts[0] may not be real community input but perhaps some sort of astroturfing/manipulation?

JohnKacz··on YouTube suspended my account for posting DeFi hackathon video
I'd add if you win the appeal you get your money back. That solves a few more of the problems I think.

Great video talking about just that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GjC5JLNFczY

JohnKacz··on Java 16
I saw someone recently post the idea that Java/Scala/F# almost functioned as LTS/Stable/Dev in reference to how these languages were sharing impact.

Not as long as the hiatus[0] several years back. I hadn't realized Jack had started posting again since then. Glad to rediscover this.

JohnKacz··on Show HN: Instantly search 28M books from OpenLibrary
Had to search by author and then add the general query via the url. As OP said, "built this in about 12 hours as a weekend project"

JohnKacz··on Show HN: Breathe – Peripheral Breath Trainer
Perhaps instead of allowing full control you could have different modes? I like using the 4-7-8 Method[1] but there are lots of different breath exercises.

JohnKacz··on How to play board games online with your friends
Looks good. I'd love to know what stack you're building with and what you're learning.

After seeing the readastorytome.com Show HN [0] was using Phoenix LiveView I was considering building a similar app to play spades or 42 as an excuse to learn some things I've been wanting to learn for awhile.

JohnKacz··on Property-Based Testing with PropEr, Erlang, and Elixir
I'm really interested in property-based testing but I haven't found any non-trivial examples out there. Anyone have any great repos or other resources they could point me to beside the author's work (which I plan on getting)?
JohnKacz··on Youtube-dl: Command-line program to download videos
Right. That's essentially what I was trying to say.
JohnKacz··on Youtube-dl: Command-line program to download videos
Gotta be careful sometimes. At least one tutorial video site I used it on (where an account was needed) I was blocked and had to open a ticket to re-enable my account by promising not to break their ToS which said something explicit about not downloading a bunch of their videos. (I was using it on whole courses and got flagged)
JohnKacz··on Taskwarrior, where have you been all my life?
Agreed. I thought it would not be the case but I’ve been bullet journaling for about 6 months and it’s been revolutionary.

I'm planning on getting a few Xenon from Particle to do something similar.

Welp glad to know I was trying to dig www.pornhub.com on my work network.
JohnKacz··on How to make a game from scratch using Lua and Löve
Wow, this is fantastic and I just realized Github has topics. Anyone have recommendations of other really well done complete tutorials on https://github.com/topics/tutorial ?
JohnKacz··on Don’t Quit When It Gets Hard
I would say that for an individual it might be hard to honestly determine between those two states. I'd say for myself there have certainly been times where I _thought_ I wanted to play a video game for several hours but ultimately I understood, based on how I felt afterwards, that is not really what I wanted.
JohnKacz··on The 7th Continent: An ambitious Choose Your Own Adventure-inspired board game
And the mechanism of being able to save a game solves the long play time problem assuming you could continue to play other times with the same person(s).
JohnKacz··on Sublime Text 3.0
Or give the diamond supporters the ability to vote on features. That may not be something Jon and Will would want though.
JohnKacz··on YouTube-mp3 agrees to shut down
Are there any other examples of a medium making this transition?
JohnKacz··on Show HN: How to discuss with opinionated people using the Socratic method[video]
(Slightly off-topic) In a graduate theological program I was introduced to the idea of "second naiveté." Simply, if the faith we inherit is a naive one and a process like a graduate education deconstructs such a faith, second naiveté looks like a choice then to return to an assembled faith held in tension with the modern criticism used in the deconstruction.

It's an intensive and disruptive process that I'm not sure many want or are able to go through, but I wish would. The key here is to walk through the entire process (one which is actually cyclical in my opinion) with the individual. Anything less seems malicious or inconsiderate at best. Said another way, to destroy someones worldview or belief system (even flawed or dangerous ones) and not help them rebuild something is not going make the world a nicer place to live in.

JohnKacz··on Hackers nab $500k as Enigma is compromised weeks before its ICO
Sorry for the uneducated question here, but I've wondered how those who steal crypto-currency "launder?" their ill-gotten coin. More specifically, how do they not get caught since the blockchain records everything? Take it out really quickly? Move little bits around to obscure ownership in some kind of shell game? Am I just totally off-base with my understanding?
JohnKacz··on Google launches Hire, a new service for helping businesses recruit
So I found this[0] but haven't read it yet. Was there something we should be looking for?

JohnKacz··on Should I invest in startup or in crypto currencies?
Sorry. Yes, this was a very sarcastic comment. Much like many of the others with people saying why not burn your money or buy lottery tickets.
