JohnIdol··on Show HN: Go-odbye – Twitter Follow/Unfollow Reporting Tool Written in Go
You unfollowed them back in revenge, of course.
JohnIdol··on Ask HN: Do employers care how long it took you to finish a degree?
They most definitely do not.
JohnIdol··on Am I really a developer or just a good Googler?
Google is just an extension of our memory nowadays - it's not worth it memorising stuff you know you can google, eventually if you google it often enough it'll stick. And googling will do you no good if you have no idea what you are doing.
JohnIdol··on Why Torture Doesn't Work: The Neuroscience of Interrogation
Jack Bauer would beg to differ.
JohnIdol··on New $1.6B supercomputer project will attempt to simulate the human brain
Actually if you read that link carefully - complete (or even complex) nematode behavior has never been simulated. Different teams have simulated different traits of behavior such as reaction to pokes on the head, non-spontaneous sinusoidal locomotion (there are different kinds of nematode locomotion triggered by the viscosity of the environment). Nothing resembling a learning nematode, indistinguishable from the real thing in terms of behavior, has ever been achieved (unfortunately).
JohnIdol··on Show HN: Our first iPhone app, built entirely in JavaScript
Speed is not the only benefit of Titanium. I recently submitted a phonegap app it was rejected on the basis that "It would be appropriate to add iOS specific UI and functionality". I am pretty pissed-off. You made the right choice.
JohnIdol··on Astronomers Discover Potentially Earthlike Planet Orbiting Binary Star
I thought discovery of 55 Cancri f was published in this paper on the 11th of July this year --> http://arxiv.org/abs/1107.1936
JohnIdol··on Astronomers Discover Potentially Earthlike Planet Orbiting Binary Star
"We're left, like the starving donkey equidistant between two bails of hay, unable to decide on what to celebrate" <-- the closest of these things is 20 light years :[
JohnIdol··on Best cover ever in the history of programming books
no kidding -- erotic nightmares!
JohnIdol··on Programmer salary in mainland Europe?
dude, you should be making way more than that - in Ireland (not even dublin) senior (perm) positions are going up to €70K
JohnIdol··on Programmer salary in mainland Europe?
It really varies a lot in my personal experience - in the UK/ROI salaries are much higher than for senior roles, salary basically spans from 45-50K to 80-90K euros, but contracting you can easily make much more than that. In Switzerland you get good deals, but if you cross the border to Italy you go back to figures similar to the one you mention for Austria.
JohnIdol··on Show HN: Let's end the Programmer Salary Taboo
Nice one. Other than secret pools, it would be very interesting to have a global pool where people could indicate country, years of commercial experience and salary.
JohnIdol··on Show HN: A Genetic Algorithm I wrote in JavaScript to evolve "Hello World"
Nice.

I did something similar in javascript --> https://github.com/JohnIdol/WasDarwinWrong ... and C# --> https://github.com/JohnIdol/typingmonkey

JohnIdol··on Ask HN: What do you want for Christmas?
an iRobot Roomba, 'cause I am sick and tired of cleaning 'manually'
JohnIdol··on Why IT Jobs are never coming back
maybe because they're all in ireland
JohnIdol··on Can a mutant douchebag change his life?
teenage mutant ninja turtles did change their lives
JohnIdol··on Why Germans have higher productivity and longer vacations
Even if it's true that from europe the impression is that ppl in the US have no holidays and do less in more time (here we go, appreciate the honesty pls), I think it's wrong to generalize based on a few examples, as a lot of it probably depends on size and philosophy of the company and, obviously, on how you measure productivity.
JohnIdol··on Kindle for the Web
Previews are cool, but it would be great if you could read all the kindle books you purchased in the browser.
JohnIdol··on There is no nanotech, stop talking about it and start laughing at it
what a bunch of bull
JohnIdol··on Ask HN: How have you learned a speaking language?
Need to have a grasp of basic grammar - after that it's all conversation, if you can't talk to real people watch tons of TV/Movies with subtitles (both movie and subs in original language of course).
JohnIdol··on Ask HN: I really want to start a startup but I don't know what to do.
welcome to the club!
JohnIdol··on ASK:how likely is it for a EU citizen to get a programing gig in the US?
Yeah - I know the UK is quite active at the moment. I am in Ireland at the moment and it's not too bad either. It just doesn't feel good that one cannot move around freely in the civilized world. Canada for instance appears to be much easier to get into.
JohnIdol··on ASK:how likely is it for a EU citizen to get a programing gig in the US?
If I had a green card I would not be asking. I am fluent in English and probably am not exactly average, but just wanted to get a feel for it. So no company is gonna bring you in and sponsor you for a green card unless you're one of those 'rockstar' developers, is that it? I am happy where I am now, but knowing there's places I cannot move to kinda sucks.
JohnIdol··on Alienware M11x gets Core i5/i7 performance boost and Optimus
too bad it'll suck no matter what 'cause it's DELL
JohnIdol··on 99designs Launches $99 Logo Store
99$ and 24 hours reminds me of Wokhei.com --> http://www.wokhei.com/ - with the difference that those are not templates
JohnIdol··on What's A Non-Programmer To Do? (How I keep myself busy.)
C was my 1st and it worked out fine - curious to know which language you'd recommend.
JohnIdol··on What's A Non-Programmer To Do? (How I keep myself busy.)
just joking :)
JohnIdol··on What's A Non-Programmer To Do? (How I keep myself busy.)
learn to code? :) --> http://www.cplusplus.com/doc/tutorial/
JohnIdol··on Ask HN:Artificial Neural Networks for electronics engineers
If you wanna implement logic operations using neural networks (you'll need 1 neuron for most of them - but XOR and NAND will require a few more and some tricks) and combine them to do some non-trivial computation - which is simple but good enough for a first year project - have a look at the first 3 chapters of this free book for an overview of this topic and have a look at the last chapter focusing on hardware for neural networks implementations (which will come in handy if we're not talking about software implementation) --> http://page.mi.fu-berlin.de/rojas/neural/
JohnIdol··on Simulating the Sea Slug, 7 neurons
interesting, but the C.Elegans has 302 neurons [ http://ims.dse.ibaraki.ac.jp/research/C_elegans_en.html ] so I'd expect a simulation of the sea slug (bound to have much more) to include more than just 7?
