JetSpiegel··on Google Cuts Jobs in Engineering and Other Divisions
But is it? Was the Stasi responsible for the lack of advertisements?

I would argue it's completely orthogonal. You can selective adopt other cultural practices. Resistance to advertising does not imply mass surveillance, it's actually the opposite.

Bot one stuck in feudalism, with a king and fiefs distributed in smoke-filled rooms, or golf fames.
JetSpiegel··on Google Cuts Jobs in Engineering and Other Divisions
I don't think is socially acceptable in the West to mention the good parts of the other side of the Iron Curtain. You must always mention the Stasi.

Even though the Berlin wall came down 30 years ago, the End of History ethos remains.

JetSpiegel··on Maestro: A Linux-compatible kernel in Rust
Unless you consider systemd's security features (filtering available syscalls), there's literally no interposition between apps and the kernel.
JetSpiegel··on All DMCA Notices Filed Against TorrentFreak in 2023 Were Bogus
The complainers are not publishers themselves, there's nothing to take down.
JetSpiegel··on Blueprint health protocol
> To put it another way, pre-civilization life expectancy was somewhere around 30 years.

You probably mean life expectancy at birth. The birth and childhood were pretty tough, but if you lived to adulthood, life expectancy was just a bit smaller.

JetSpiegel··on Blueprint health protocol
> That in itself is a scientific claim that needs to be supported by evidence.

That experiment has been running for the entire human existence. Richer people live longer and better lives.

JetSpiegel··on Apple's Pro Display XDR takes Thunderbolt 3 to its limit
Better wait at the very least 20 years for the patents to expire, so I would bet good money on 50 years.

It's not a silver bullet anyway, but "become generic" is doing some extremely heavy lifting.

JetSpiegel··on YouTube blames ad blockers for slow load times, not the browser
There's no honor system, you cannot pay for the fruit.

Buying Youtube Premium is like installing an "official" ad blocking, you are just chucking money into the general Google money pit. You aren't paying for the content, because Google doesn't create it.

Same thing with Spotify, you are just financing Taylor Swift or Joe Rogan.

JetSpiegel··on YouTube blames ad blockers for slow load times, not the browser
But they just send it when you request it, is that theft?

Is is theft is you eat dozens of unlimited breadsticks?

JetSpiegel··on YouTube blames ad blockers for slow load times, not the browser
That's why Google is removimg ad blockers on Chrome, the second friction is then infinite.
JetSpiegel··on My techno-optimism
Parent-Child relationship implies future emancipation. Why would the megacorp laundering control through AI give up power?
JetSpiegel··on My techno-optimism
Whoa.

It's from the original script at least, not the batteries explanation in the final product.

xrandr: wdisplays, kanshi fpr automatic setup

xdotool: ydotool, but it might miss some features

xwininfo: this is compositor specific. Sway has swaymsg, that's what I use.

But you are still in Dubai. A cool skyscraper filled with water for diving, but also bus stops with AC.
JetSpiegel··on Argentina elects 'shock therapy' libertarian Javier Milei as president
Indeed, only his VP that believes the US-backed coup was fake news.

I love how libertarians are in favour of the state murdering 22 thousands people. Freedom!

I'm going to buy stock in Lockheed Martin, Argentina will need to buy so many helicopters to throw people into the ocean.
JetSpiegel··on A Timeline of the OpenAI Board
And immediately turn off access to Azure. I hope they have FDE, but it doesn't matter anyway because Microsoft can read the RAM.
JetSpiegel··on Details emerge of surprise board coup that ousted CEO Sam Altman at OpenAI
It could hack into NVIDIA and AMD, compromise their firmware build machines silently, then publish a GPU vulnerability that required firmware updates.

After a couple months, turn on the backdoor.

JetSpiegel··on Portugal's Tech Boom Challenged by Tax Change
What tech boom? People here being subsidized by the locals for working remotely, alone, for foreign companies? That's not a tech boom, that's a cheap hotel.

> "What has happened in the Portuguese technology sector since 2010 was something spectacular", says

Dude that takes a cut everytime someome moves here, and will see his income dry up. What's an "innovation consultant" anyway?

And then they repeat the stupid mantra of taking the marginal tax rate and applying it to their entire income. I though this was the cream of the crop of tech workers, but they are easily foiled by a piecewise function. They also badmouth the country that is stealing from their poor to subsidize their lifestyle, then wonder where the government acts as they do.

JetSpiegel··on Putting ads in hardware through HDMI
My cable box already disables the fast forward button for about 10s after muting, so that you have another hurdle when skipping ads. You need to skip first then mute, but still get that full volume ad jolt. I already pay for cable, there are ads in the broadcast, and ads when playing recorded programs.

Ironically, most ads inserted by the cable company are for their own competitors, Netflix and Prime Video.

Why not? Why not be their own label?

JetSpiegel··on Watch this guy work and you'll finally understand the TikTok era
> Like dedicated internet-radio stations, as opposed to IRL-radio stations who happen to have a web player.

Digitally Imported is still good, speaking as a happy customer.

JetSpiegel··on As Digital Nomads Flock to Lisbon, Portugal's Youth Are Leaving in Droves
https://www.pordata.pt/db/portugal/ambiente+de+consulta/tabe...

Actually, for 2021, earning 40k€ per year puts you in the top 10%. 4 in 5 families earn less than 27k€. Less than 5000 families earn more than 250k€. Top 1% is 100k€.

This is for a population of about 10 million.

JetSpiegel··on As Digital Nomads Flock to Lisbon, Portugal's Youth Are Leaving in Droves
> IMHO this was an overreaction. If the issue was pricing out locals, you could simply remove real estate as a qualifying investment under the visa and/or increase the minimum investment amount.

This is what the ban did. The golden visa for creating 10 non-temporary jobs remains, but for 9 years, there were 250 jobs created, with 20 takers (meaning almost all of them created the bare minimum 10 jobs).

JetSpiegel··on As Digital Nomads Flock to Lisbon, Portugal's Youth Are Leaving in Droves
Sure, no new licenses, but the entire AirBnB neighborhoods in the tourist areas are still there, sucking up valuable housing stock. There haven't been any reduction in the amount of AirBnB, just no new licenses are issued.
JetSpiegel··on As Digital Nomads Flock to Lisbon, Portugal's Youth Are Leaving in Droves
Same here, the system has been in place for ages and hasn't failed. Last I check it was fully funded until 2060 or so.

During the IMF "bailout" pensions were reduced nominally. This was a political choice, and the party that did that will never win an election again as long as all those pensioners live.
