Jedi72··on Confusion as Democratic Results Are Delayed in Iowa
The official position is that there was no foul play, but I still can't believe in this time of super-heightened cyber-security concerns, anyone in the Democratic party would try and use a smartphone app for anything election related. The whole platform (IMHO) is compromised when you're talking nation-state level adversaries, let alone when your opponent is the Commander-in-Chief of the NSA/CIA, the ones who we all know put the back doors in place to begin with.

Occams razor though - in 2016 Bernie got gypped and lobbied for a new process. Half a case of beer says that as soon as they have a proper accountability, it comes to light that nobody really has any clue how the system is supposed to work.

Jedi72··on Retailers are turning to facial recognition software (2018)
This is not a case of consistent logic through ignorance. The same friends who will literally go out guns blazing before letting law enforcement take their AR15, believe Snowden was a traitor and the intelligence agencies would never abuse their power ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Jedi72··on Retailers are turning to facial recognition software (2018)
I live in Texas, and I've seen awkward moments at dinner parties where pro-gun people say the government must not ever have a registry of owners or civilization will collapse. I bet that the next day, to let off a little steam, they bought bullets on their iPhone and had Google maps take them to the range...
Jedi72··on Oliver Cromwell, the man who wouldn’t be king
I highly recommend Mike Duncans 'revolutions' podcast for a thorough and entertaining history of Cromwell and the entire English revolution - as well as the American revolution, French (my current season) and about 6 others.
Jedi72··on Those Mythological "Jobs Of Tomorrow"
Dude they make you say the pledge of allegiance, every - damn - day. US schools are extremely culturally conditioning.
Jedi72··on Nuclear Power: Game over (2016) [pdf]
Regardless of the reasoning, if the US cant keep a site operating for even 100 years, how do we expect it to keep functioning for 10,000?

Storing nuear waste is a complete non-starter for me simply because of the timelines involved. Nobody can guarantee the safety of anything for thousands (!!) of years, when the USA itself is only ~400 years old.

Jedi72··on Ask HN: What are the best unknown books you have read?
Assume non-determinism - this is just pure pragmatism because if the universe is conpletely deterministic, what is the point of even this conversation? It would be immoral for god to create us without free will. If we have free will, we must be able to act immorally, else it's not really free will. So god is in a bind - he has to imbue us with the power to go against his wishes, morally speaking. Immorality in humans is a direct consequence of a moral creator.
Jedi72··on America’s aggressive use of sanctions endangers the dollar’s reign
It's more like gangsters providing "protection" to local businesses. When it comes to the US, you have no choice in the matter.
Jedi72··on Life at the End of American Empire
American pride won't save this country from long-term trends. Before any meaningful change can be made, the "we're the best" attitude has to go. Sometime in the next 2 decades China is gonna put a man on Mars before the US, I can't wait to see the shocked faces
Jedi72··on Tanka: Our way of deploying to Kubernetes
My 2020 prediction: k8 stacks are the new JS frameworks.
Jedi72··on Uber and Lyft Suggest the Days of Cheap Rides Could Be Over
Hopefully this bullshit opens up a new market for digital obfustication services. Pay me $100, I will show you how to save $300/yr in Uber fees by changing your digital appearance.
Jedi72··on Greensboro Man Creates Dating App Where He's the Only Guy Allowed
lmao, so I just ran this idea by my girlfriend and she said "yeah its good but there would be trolls, I would just put hideous women with hot guys, and vice versa" - so, not so easy to succeed at (also, what a catch my girl is :P)
Jedi72··on Greensboro Man Creates Dating App Where He's the Only Guy Allowed
This is actually a pretty good idea. I think women would really go for it, since most of the 'matchmakers' are probably other women
Jedi72··on Greensboro Man Creates Dating App Where He's the Only Guy Allowed
Soounds like OP just wants to formalize the existing process. Dating is expensive!
Jedi72··on TikTok hits 1.5B downloads, outperforming Instagram
Im surprised at peoples comments like "its not organic growth" and "they'll never be profitable" - how is TikTok different to snap/insta/fb in the early years? The thing that matters in that biz is hitting critical mass of users. Then they can spend the next 10 yrs bleeding their users in long tail of platform stickyness.
Jedi72··on Who is the real Dice Man? The elusive writer behind a cult novel
He uses multiple dice a few times, but its more that he refers to "the dice" as some kind of god of chance, like "I shall let the dice decide my fate".
Jedi72··on Bob Iger Takes the Gloves Off for Disney’s Streaming Debut
Once upon a time, Disney made films. Now they just make money.
Jedi72··on Former Twitter Employees Charged with Spying for Saudi Arabia
Am I out of the loop, what have Microsoft done to support open-source? Made linux containers easy to use on Azure? Wrote a code editor so that they extend and extinguish developer mindshare and get them onto Azure? Im being serious, what have MS actually done to claim they have supported open-source (and of course, open-source != free software)
Jedi72··on A CS degree is better than teaching yourself how to code?
The lack of appreciation of pure knowledge in this thread is truly saddening. If all you care about is getting a job, this question boils down to simple finance. If you want to truly learn, understand and engage in a topic, what can possibly be better than emmersing oneself in an environment of learning, inquisitive students and knowledgable professors full-time?
Jedi72··on Betrayal at Krondor
"Tremble and despair, for I am power!"
Jedi72··on We Need to Dream Bigger Than Bike Lanes
In Texas even motorcyclists dont require helmets by law (insanity IMHO).
Jedi72··on The demise of Docker and the rise of Kubernetes
Virdings law...
Jedi72··on Ask HN: How do you share/organize knowledge at work and life?
EDIT: Check OPs history, he asked this exact same question 46 days ago!

Ive never heard of this startup before, now they're all over this thread. Do you reckon they made this whole thread for marketing purposes? OP is a pretty anonymous user.

I already dislike them now & hopefully never have to use them. Someone else posted Tiddlywiki which is an amazing open-source program, suggest everyone at least check it out. It changed my life. I obviously have no stake in it, so why doubt me? No disclaimer necessary.

Jedi72··on Ask HN: How do you share/organize knowledge at work and life?
This is the best answer. Dont fall for these startups shilling their products here!
Jedi72··on Understanding the OWASP list
Yes, I'm guessing you haven't ever Googled 'web app security' or similar.
Jedi72··on Habits of Expert Software Designers
This is basically just marketing for a book
Jedi72··on Ask HN: What are some of your recent failures?
I've been trying to customize emacs into a useful editor for weeks now.
Jedi72··on The growing need for human robot-minders could juice the remote workforce
My 2c, instead of building autonomous cars/robots which work in our current cities, we should just redesign our cities to cater for these new ideas. We could have an autonomous delivery system with current technology if we just put aside some dedicated space for them to operate. No fancy AI, just good old fashioned sensors and control systems. Put roughly pallet sized tunnels under the roads, and it doesnt even have to encroach on public space. Way less problems in the long run IMHO.
Jedi72··on Hong Kong leader to announce formal withdrawal of extradition bill
I read this exact same comment on Reddit. Word for word. Very strange.

Edit: Its same user id, probably this user just cross-posted.

Jedi72··on More Fires Now Burning in Angola, Congo Than Amazon
I hear there are people protesting outside embassies about the Amazon fires. I agree with that, but I hope people carry it through to protesting Australian embassies aswell. We're just as guilty of destroying the Great Barrier Reef for profit (I'm Australian). Seems unfair to single out Brazil.
