JeanMarcS··on An AI agent deleted our production database. The agent's confession is below
To be 100% fair, having only one provider for backups is really risky. A minimum 3-2-1 would be better
JeanMarcS··on The bot situation on the internet is worse than you could imagine
I'm getting this patern a lot on Prestashop websites, where thousand, to not say hundreds of thousand, of request are coming from bots not announcing themselves in the User-agent, and coming from different IP's

Very annoying. And you can't filter them because they look like legitimate trafic.

On a page with differents options (such as color, size, etc...) they'll try all the combinaisons, eating all the ressources.

JeanMarcS··on Things I've Done with AI
And like everyone else you trained the AI how to replace you by giving it more insight on how to prompt stuff.
JeanMarcS··on Dune II written in HTML5/JS
Just did the first level on my smartphone ! And won it. Totaly playable. Great work
JeanMarcS··on TikTok is tracking you, even if you don't use the app
Perhaps the title should be extend " as Facebook, X, and everyone else does"
JeanMarcS··on Trump says Venezuela’s Maduro captured after strikes
And that was when the "French always surrender" meme started to pop up on the Internet. US propaganda at the time
JeanMarcS··on Ask HN: How did you learn to code?
This and a Z80 assembler book to speed up a bit code because the basic was really too slow to do anything (had the 16k memory extention too because 800 and something octet were not enough)
JeanMarcS··on Former EU commissioner and activists barred from US
UN hq is in New York for exemple.
JeanMarcS··on Copywriters reveal how AI has decimated their industry
IMHO you can and should.

AI is a great assistant. Letting go the more experienced dev is a bad move.

We work in a field where you should understand what it is you're doing.

We had a wave of "dev" who where told that assembling libraries and API as Lego is the way. It's only a sub part.

Now with the AI fuzz, people think it's kind of magic and do everything by its own. It's not.

You can gain a lot of time with AI if you know how to prompt and are capable to understand what it spits out.

But beting the future of your business on less experimented junior for saving a couple thousand dollars is not a clever move.

(Again, my opinion)

JeanMarcS··on Microsoft Will Preload Windows 11 File Explorer to Fix Bad Performance
Agreed.

So it should be an independant app and not be part of a gaming system that have nothing to do installed by default on a pro computer.

When I needed this functionality and find out it was on the game bar I too was a bit shocked finding out it was installed !

JeanMarcS··on Ask HN: Is building for the web even worth it now?
At first I thought you were a bit contemptuous. After all, we don't know what OP is really doing on the net.

But after reading a lot of the other comments, I think you're on to something. A lot of people mistake social media with the Internet (not saying OP or any one here is), showing that they (SM) somehow won (for now) and it's sad.

It's the nineties back again, when most ISP logged you in their application (looking at you AOL) or on their website. People open their phone and go directly on Instagram, Fb, or whatever, and they're "on the web" they think.

JeanMarcS··on Retiring Test-Ipv6.com
"IPv6 only or at least dual stack"
JeanMarcS··on Windows 7 marketshare jumps to nearly 10% as Windows 10 support is about to end
You mean the software that can't open 2 differents files if they have the same name ?
JeanMarcS··on Survey: a third of senior developers say over half their code is AI-generated
This. For me (senior as in I am in the field since last century), that's how I use it. "I want to do that, with this data, to obtain that"

I still do the part of my job that I got experience on, analyze the need, and use the AI like an assistant to do small libraries or part of code. Like these, errors have less chance to appear. Then I glue that together.

For me the time ratio is best use like that. If I have to describe the whole thing, I'm not far from doing it myself, so there's no need for me.

Important: I work alone, not in a team, so maybe it has an impact on my thought

JeanMarcS··on Optimizing Your Debian 13 Desktop
I stopped reading at "Enable Snap and Flatpak"
JeanMarcS··on The AIpocalypse is here for web sites as search referrals plunge
I would add the search of an error message while developing. Mostly using the search engines for that.

But hey ! Now you can ask ChatGPT, Copilot or whatever for the same thing !

We are surounded

JeanMarcS··on Simplest C++ Callback, from SumatraPDF
Don't know about the code subtilities, but SumatraPDF is a gift for viewing PDF on MS Windows. So big thanks to the author !
JeanMarcS··on Radio pulses detected coming from ice in Antarctica
I came to cite this book too ! Read it while in school when I was around 11 and it opened me to Sci Fi.
JeanMarcS··on Uncovering the mechanics of The Games: Winter Challenge
Well, in the 80's I had an Amstrad CPC, and there was a game named "Le passager du temps" ("Passenger of time") [1]. It was a text adventure game with some graphism in it. The goal was to explore the house of your uncle and find out where he was.

After a while, you found a machine and when you finally assemble everything and start it....the game stop working and loop in a "we're tired of hacking" message ! Of course, with the cracked version.

And it was clever, because

1) you tried the game and enjoyed it. And now you're frustrated and want to play it, so you might actually buy it

2) the anticopy test was late in the game, so everyone who copied it thought the copy was ok and spreaded it.

A sort of shareware.

JeanMarcS··on 'The tyranny of apps': those without smartphones are unfairly penalised
My brother doesn't have à smartphone (by choice).

For example, he cannot access his bank account via his desktop anymore. He have to go to his agency in person.

Well we all did that for years so it's just annoying, because he still have the possibility to do it and it's his choice.

But what will happen if all the brick and mortar close ? When will it be mandatory to get a smartphone for his bank app, just to have access to his money ?

And it's just an example...

JeanMarcS··on Half-Life 2 and Dishonored art lead Viktor Antonov has died
Well it seems I played almost all of his games recently. I have an Half Life 2 game in progress and finished Dishonored for the 4th time last december.
JeanMarcS··on Microsoft should be terrified of SteamOS
I've got a Windows XP virtual machine on my Linux desktop computer exactly for a similar reason. I start it when needed and close it.

And of course it's not connected to Internet.

JeanMarcS··on I Quit Spotify
And yet Money is aired alone on radio :-)
JeanMarcS··on WP21
Ok, sorry for this example. I last worked on one about a year and a half ago.
JeanMarcS··on WP21
WordPress is a great blogging CMS.

The fact that people use it for something else is what create strong opinions.

Example : woo commerce.

Products ? In the WP_POST db. Orders ? In the WP_POST db.

And in every post about WP it says that using WP_POST for storing your data is good practice.

Well I don't think it is (but it's only my opinion. A strong one).

And the problem is that a LOT of plugins and themes are like that.

JeanMarcS··on Twitter/X is now broken in FF when anti-browser fingerprinting settings are used
Is it ? If you add an exception, won't you be tracked by all X icons on every other websites ?
JeanMarcS··on Twitter/X is now broken in FF when anti-browser fingerprinting settings are used
Sorry for reddit link, only place I found confrimation of the information by now.

Got the surprise of twitter/X not allowing access on Firefox with message :

Firefox’s Enhanced Tracking Protection (Strict Mode) is known to cause issues on x.com

JeanMarcS··on EU opens child safety probes of Facebook and Instagram, citing addictive design
This exactly.

When our kids reached 12, they were almost the only ones in their class to not have a smartphone, nor any social media.

So what to do ?

Trying by ourselves to educate every parents whom made bad decisions letting their children get access to social media way too early ?

Continue holding to our valor and isolate them from any outside school social interaction with their schoolmate ?

Bend the knee to the power of social media that have rotten our society so deep, and let our kids use WhatsApp to communicate with their mates ?

Of course, in my ideal world, it would be the first option. But I've tried and failed (may be I'm not a good talker ?) so many times that I gave up.

So if any government rule was made to protect my kids and protecting other's ones, well I'll sure want a debate on it. And a people debate, not a lobbyist one of course.

JeanMarcS··on Infected blood scandal: Children were used as 'guinea pigs' in clinical trials
And that's why we end up with antivax, and anti science conspiracies.

This is food for their argumentation, and with that kind of stuff, it's hard to explain that science should prevail.

This is sad.

Sorry for editing the title but it was really too clickbait
