Jean-Papoulos··on Ask HN: How to be alone?
>Everything feels hollow now

You need to figure that one out if you want to truly get out of this funk. The rest is secondary.

If you feel like you have "too much free time" and you need to occupy it to keep bad thoughts away, volunteer. Also hit the gym/a sport (padel seems to have taken off !)

Jean-Papoulos··on System76 on Age Verification Laws
> We, collectively, only have ourselves to blame, and now it's too late.

Can't believe I'm reading this. I don't want age verification at all, whether it's self-imposed or not. I should be free to use whatever tools I want however I want.

Jean-Papoulos··on GPT‑5.3 Instant
This malformed awful website redirects me to the French version no matter what I do. I even changed the url to en-US and it still does. Stop treating me like a child, OpenAI.
Jean-Papoulos··on Nobody gets promoted for simplicity
I disagree with this, being able to take something and surprise your management with how few dependencies it has and how fast you set it up makes them want to work with you more, not less. The engineer making a new abstraction layer has management groaning at the idea of having to onboard everyone to it.
Jean-Papoulos··on Frankensqlite a Rust reimplementation of SQLite with concurrent writers
We need to ban this kind of AI slop yesterday.
Jean-Papoulos··on How will OpenAI compete?
Their existing users is an edge, but that's not much for the scale they're operating at. Users are lazy and even if you tell them "Gemini is 50 % better !" if ChatGPT isn't bad they won't switch.
Jean-Papoulos··on Minecraft Java is switching from OpenGL to Vulkan
They do have a bunch of add-ons now with Realms notably, but I wonder if this revenue goes to Mojang or to another Microsoft branch for tax reasons. To say nothing of derived media, plushies, Legos etc.
Jean-Papoulos··on GrapheneOS – Break Free from Google and Apple
>Because a phone running an unknown OS is significantly more dangerous than a phone that hasn't received security updates for years.

That's just straight-up false ; the phone without security updates has known exploits its user knows nothing about (and certainly not how to avoid them). The phone with an unknown OS has a user capable of installing said OS, at the very least.

Jean-Papoulos··on Is Show HN dead? No, but it's drowning
It took a billion years to get to the tool-making state, and then less than a 1000th of that time to making CPUs. Then a 1000th of that time to make LLMs. We are in a parabolic extreme
Jean-Papoulos··on In Search of a Discord Replacement
Matrix is awful. I don't know if that's still the case but when I tried it a year ago it took me more than 30 minutes to get it working. In discord, you sign up with email (very low friction), click the + button and boom. You've got a private server you friends can join by clicking a link. It Just Works and until an alternative has this level of convenience Discord is not going away.

This is to say nothing of the insanity of public, effectively unmoderated rooms on Matrix.

Jean-Papoulos··on Magnus Carlsen Wins the Freestyle (Chess960) World Championship
He could win bullet. No increment means his years of streaming bullet will let an edge when moving in the endgame, so he just needs to draw out the game long enough to get Carlsen either to 0 or in trouble. Somehow we got a chess format where mechanics matter :)
Jean-Papoulos··on I want to wash my car. The car wash is 50 meters away. Should I walk or drive?
It proves that this is not intelligence. This is autocomplete on steroids.
Jean-Papoulos··on Claude Code is being dumbed down?
You've reached the stage where if something is possible in CC, someone out there is using it. Taking anything away will have them ask for it back ; you need to let people toggle things. https://xkcd.com/1172/
Jean-Papoulos··on TSMC to make advanced AI semiconductors in Japan
Japan's foreign policy about Taiwan includes the notion that an attack on Taiwan is an "existential threat" to Japan, enabling a constitutional reasonning for a war in such a case.
Jean-Papoulos··on France dumps Zoom and Teams as Europe seeks digital autonomy from the US
>EU citizens have elected ineffective leaders for decades -- leaders that ignored the potential to set up homegrown cloud providers, software suites or tech companies.

France has been doing this since De Gaulle. That's why they're able to do this now, as well as produce almost everything they use that is defense-related.

Jean-Papoulos··on New York’s budget bill would require “blocking technology” on all 3D printers
I wonder if this could fall under the 1st amendement. In any case it is stupid, won't work and has nothing to do in a budget bill. Someone's getting paid
Jean-Papoulos··on Waymo robotaxi hits a child near an elementary school in Santa Monica
>driving 17mph (27kph for metric types) in this context is reckless and not something human would typically do

Unfortunately, a vast overestimation of human danger recognition. Or empathy, unsure

Jean-Papoulos··on The WiFi only works when it's raining (2024)
>With a bit of work, my dad set up a line-of-sight Wi-Fi bridge — a couple of high-gain directional Wi-Fi antennas pointed at each other — between the office and our apartment.

How was that not the first thing to be checked ? OP must have hit themselves over the head for not thinking of that one sooner

Jean-Papoulos··on A few random notes from Claude coding quite a bit last few weeks
>Generation (writing code) and discrimination (reading code) are different capabilities in the brain. Largely due to all the little mostly syntactic details involved in programming, you can review code just fine even if you struggle to write it.

If this is how all juniors are learning nowadays, seniors are going shot up in value in the next decade.

Jean-Papoulos··on Apple to soon take up to 30% cut from all Patreon creators in iOS app
Because apps are the lowest-friction path to users. If you publish a tool that targets an audience of more than a very specific niche of people, you'll get people asking for an app literally every day. My inbox used to be full of them.
Jean-Papoulos··on I was banned from Claude for scaffolding a Claude.md file?
>Yes, the only e-mail I got was a credit note giving my money back.

That's great news ! They don't have nearly enough staff to deal with support issues, so they default to reimbursement. Which means if you do this every month, you get Claude for free :)

Jean-Papoulos··on SpaceX lowering orbits of 4,400 Starlink satellites for safety's sake
From a comment :

>The first move in the coming WWIII, where the emperors try to expand their empires militaril,y will be to wipe out any orbit with Starlink satellites.

I find this highly unlikely, given Starlink is soon to reached 10k satellites and will continue to grow. Why expand 10 000 ballistic missiles to bring down one of many communications networks ?

Jean-Papoulos··on MTOTP: Wouldn't it be nice if you were the 2FA device?
I can chuck a brick at your head. Clearly the brick is broken
Jean-Papoulos··on Why Ontario Digital Service couldn't procure '98% safe' LLMs (15M Canadians)
>As Head of Product for the Ontario Digital Service

Ah, this explains a lot about the state of Canada actually.

Jean-Papoulos··on Apple picks Gemini to power Siri
Why would you not bend the key ? There's a reasonnable chance Trump is gone in less than 3 years and MAGA tears itself apart. Better bet on that than try to make a stand now and lose everything.
Jean-Papoulos··on Apple picks Gemini to power Siri
Why would a the curve of solar prices be in any way correlated with the curve of AI improvements ?

The deceleration of pace is visible to anyone capable of using Google.

Jean-Papoulos··on The next two years of software engineering
>The flip scenario: AI unlocks massive demand for developers across every industry, not just tech. Healthcare, agriculture, manufacturing, and finance all start embedding software and automation.

I find this one hard to believe. Software is already massively present in all these industries and has already replaced jobs. The last step is complete automation (ie drone tractors that can load up at a hub, go to the field and spray all by themselves) but the bottleneck for this isn't "we need more code", it's real-world issues that I don't see AI help solving (political, notably)

Jean-Papoulos··on Trump says Venezuela’s Maduro captured after strikes
Gaddafi was trying to establish a gold-backed "arab" currency system and wanted to sell his oil using it. This was a threat to the US dollar so Obama was very happy to see Sarkozy knock at his door asking to go get the oil themselves lol
Jean-Papoulos··on OneDrive just deleted all of my files
Microsoft developers are secretly the people doing the most work to develop alternatives to Windows, by making it hell on earth to use it
Jean-Papoulos··on Lessons from 14 years at Google
>Your job isn’t to complete tickets that fulfill a list of asks from your product manager. Your job is to build software that solves users problems.

While I agree in spirit, when you reach a certain amount of people working on a project it's impossible. The product manager's job is to understand real user problems and communicate them efficiently to the engineering team so the engineering team can focus on engineering.
