Jean-Papoulos··on Why the Bronze Age Collapsed
>the event that really kicked things off was the explosion of Santorini

That was centuries before. Volcanic winter(s) for sure occurred, but they would be distant memory if anything by the time of the collapse.

Jean-Papoulos··on Systems that no one will test
Software is more than 10x more complicated than a bicycle though. Like, this is orders of magnitude off ; we're talking about comparing something purely mechanical to Turing machines inside Turing machines.
Jean-Papoulos··on Claude discovers a novel enzyme system with CRISPR-like repeats
>While this underlying RT, found in a jumbo phage, had been identified in previous studies, Claude appears to be the first to notice the system’s defining features—an associated array of non-coding DNA sequences and an additional accessory protein of unknown function.

So they investigated an already known thing. Not exactly "discovering a new system"... Anyone with money to throw at this already-known thing would have gotten those results I assume.

Jean-Papoulos··on Rust is tier-1 language at Microsoft
If we have AGI, it can just solve all the memory issues in the existing codebase instead of rewriting it all.
Jean-Papoulos··on Shopify is moving from React Native back to Swift and Kotlin
We have no idea how many of these engineers work on the mobile app. This comment is somehow both AI slop and human slop.
Jean-Papoulos··on How I advertise malicious software on Google Ads
Google is guilty of this across their whole range of product. We hear a lot about Youtube, but it's the same for Ads and Android. I had my developer account banned for a copyright issue, and to this day I don't know what the issue actually was.
Jean-Papoulos··on VMware migration reduces Tottenham Hotspur's licensing fees by 85 percent
“If [virtualization is] not built into a broader AI operation stack, the value is even lower again,” Pickering said.

For the love of god keep Gen AI off of infrastructure...

Jean-Papoulos··on GPT-6 Astra
>The harder question, in Chollet’s framing, is: how efficiently can a system learn to do something genuinely new?

The more diverse stuff it knows, the easier it will be to learn something new.

Jean-Papoulos··on On non-rooted Android 17, ADB uninstall of system apps fails
The people that go through the trouble of installing apks from random websites to not pay $1 are in the minority. What's more, most of them wouldn't pay that dollar if they couldn't find the cracked apk. So the only thing you're realistically doing is cutting yourself off of a huge market. Convenience sells, the Play Store does that
Jean-Papoulos··on Codex starts encrypting sub-agent prompts
You already have an agent freely doing stuff on your machine. Subagents prompts are a weird place to draw a line. It's not like you're reading everything the agent is doing in any case, let's not kid ourselves.
Jean-Papoulos··on Postgres rewritten in Rust, now passing 100% of the Postgres regression tests
It's useful to show the actual team that it's possible. From there, they can make the decision of whether to go the bun route with more information.
Jean-Papoulos··on Building relationships with customers through support didn't turn out as hoped
> I’m happy to explain why an essential app is worth your money

This is a podcast app. It's in no way essential, how did you use to explain this to your customers ?

Jean-Papoulos··on A Man Who Reads Books for a Living
So you think that it's mostly a lack of general "stamina" for actually doing things, over the lessening of abilities to do things ?
Jean-Papoulos··on AMD pulls a bait-and-switch on Linux users with Vivado licensing changes
Very few, entreprise users (aka volume) will pay the license, hobbyists will pirate it if need be. AMD doesn't want to do support for the hobbyists for free, that's all.
Jean-Papoulos··on The worst job interview I ever had
From the way this is written, it's clear that the interview was not about "at work". If it was the interview would have stopped OP to say it after the first question, which obviously didn't happen.
Jean-Papoulos··on Google says criminal hackers used AI to find a major software flaw
If this is true, I hope AI exploit-finding will force the industry to harden itself against supply-chain vulnerabilities.
Jean-Papoulos··on Maybe you shouldn't install new software for a bit
Of course, why didn't anyone think of that ? I bet if someone started to ship software that has no errors they'll make a huge amount of money, especially from all the people that are security-minded !

Please grow a brain.

Jean-Papoulos··on The 'Hidden' Costs of Great Abstractions
Hardware is cheap ; human labor is not. Companies have figured out that the best way to extract monye from customers is to give them something that barely works now, rather then something that works great later.
Jean-Papoulos··on An AI agent deleted our production database. The agent's confession is below
>the question of model-level responsibility versus integration-level responsibility is a story I'll write separately

This guy blames everyone and everything but himself.

Jean-Papoulos··on An AI agent deleted our production database. The agent's confession is below
"I've put enough safety around the bomb that the bomb is worth using. The other people that exploded just didn't have enough safety but I do !"
Jean-Papoulos··on We have a 99% email reputation, but Gmail disagrees
You are spam. It doesn't get any simpler than this.
Jean-Papoulos··on Who is Satoshi Nakamoto? My quest to unmask Bitcoin's creator
This 5% increase is actually huge, because the amount of bitcoins in actual free float is very small. The same coins get traded over and over while the vast majority sits in cold storage. A 5% supply sell off would eat up all of the order books, and that's before everyone else starts selling off.

Do note that the selloff would be automatic, huge wallets are monitored 24/7.

If I was Satoshi, I would go a to big bank and sell the private key directly for huge discount. Still a billionaire, no trace.

Jean-Papoulos··on US and Iran agree to provisional ceasefire
The terrorism recruitement numbers are gonna go through the roof in the next few years based on this alone.
Jean-Papoulos··on How to get better at guitar
>When you hear the first guitar note, stop the song, find the note on the guitar, and write it down.

OP, you should have mentionned the prerequisite of absolute pitch...

Jean-Papoulos··on How We Rewrote 130K Lines from React to Svelte in Two Weeks
Would love to see how this has panned out 2 years down the line, to see if maintaining the AI code turned out to be a problem.
Jean-Papoulos··on The Strait of Hormuz Oil Shock Is Now Heading West
>Petrodollar hypothesis hasn't been a thing for decades.

https://www.wsj.com/finance/currencies/the-dominant-dollar-f...

80% of oil trade in 2023 in dollars. Mostly importantly, the gulf states do in exchange for US security guarantees, which Trump just blew up in spectacular fashion. Decades of Middle Eastern policy have just been undone because of the US half-committing to this war.

Jean-Papoulos··on Full network of clitoral nerves mapped out for first time
>1. It must increase the fitness of the organism that carries it, i.e. the likelihood of its carrier having descendants as compared to non-carriers

This isn't necessarily true. If you map out changes through the history of species, you'll find no significant changes but a lot of diversity for long periods, followed by big changes and low diversity for a short period. That's because during "abundant" times, the population will develop diversity as long as it doesn't significantly hinder reproductive rates. When an environnemental pressure comes up, the diversity dies down because the ones lucky enough to have adaptations that suddenly become useful and reproduce more.

So an animal might get a longer neck, but that doesn't significantly increase reproduction because food is aplenty. It's only when there's a drought that longer necks become an advantage and the trait is now selected for.

Jean-Papoulos··on Sodium-ion EV battery breakthrough delivers 11-min charging and 450 km range
>technically speaking, if every household had solar panels and batteries it would not only be cheaper than the grid

Absolutely not, economies of scale. To say nothing of the cost incurred when an issue appears with your installation (lightning strike, water damage, etc) would be much higher.

Jean-Papoulos··on Ask HN: How to be alone?
>Everything feels hollow now

You need to figure that one out if you want to truly get out of this funk. The rest is secondary.

If you feel like you have "too much free time" and you need to occupy it to keep bad thoughts away, volunteer. Also hit the gym/a sport (padel seems to have taken off !)

Jean-Papoulos··on System76 on Age Verification Laws
> We, collectively, only have ourselves to blame, and now it's too late.

Can't believe I'm reading this. I don't want age verification at all, whether it's self-imposed or not. I should be free to use whatever tools I want however I want.
