JamesCoyne··on DigitalOcean Ends Open Source Credits Program
Yes, the contrast is telling.
JamesCoyne··on Sourcehut account takeover via build logs (XSS in ansi2html)
Really commendable work fixing up the upstream python project. I don't think there's anything to be embarrassed about in the timeline.
JamesCoyne··on Paint.net 5.2 alpha now runs on Linux
Unlikely to see wide distribution on Linux given the license
JamesCoyne··on GitHub is having issues now
Git ops seem fine. Anything search related is intermittent at best
JamesCoyne··on Bat: Cat with syntax highlighting
Also "numbat". A favorite of mine
JamesCoyne··on Turn MEP prompts into AutoCAD drawings in minutes
Hey OP, can you share how you came across this company? It is incredibly new, the domain has only been registered for a few weeks, and their are barely any google results for it.

Anyone have recommendations for similar Android apps?
JamesCoyne··on GoLic, injects license into source code files
Could use a (2021) in the title. No activity since then in the repo
JamesCoyne··on He Died Building a Ship for the U.S. Government. His Family Got Nothing
> "When Pérez’s partner sought death benefits from G-4 Services, the local staffing contractor that had hired him to work for Thoma-Sea, G-4 rebuffed her. “Pérez was a self-employed independent contractor and thus a claim for death benefits is not compensable..."

Brutal

JamesCoyne··on Atkinson Hyperlegible Font
Google thinks it's OFL v1.1 https://github.com/googlefonts/atkinson-hyperlegible?tab=rea... But it also has a Reserved Font Name, so probably OFL-1.1-RFN going by the SPDX License List https://spdx.org/licenses/

Kinda too bad they don't just state which license they're aiming for.

Whoops.
JamesCoyne··on Open Collective Official Statement – OCF Dissolution
Given this news, it's interesting to read the "Investor Update" published by Open Collective earlier this month: https://blog.opencollective.com/open-collective-inc-investor...

Open Collective will (presumably) experience a further drop in revenue as they lose the "platform fee" they collected from OCF

JamesCoyne··on Air pollution over Alberta oil sands up to 6,300% higher than reported
Producing oil from "tight" formations through fracking will not be displaced by oil sands production. It's just cheaper to run with much lower upfront cost. Hard to find numbers here, but scroll down to figure 5 here https://energynow.ca/2023/02/canadian-upstream-oil-sector-su...

Also: this page is really interesting generally https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bakken_formation

JamesCoyne··on Cerebras-GPT: A Family of Open, Compute-Efficient, Large Language Models
Slightly off-topic:

I remember seeing news about the enormous chip Cerebras was/is selling (pdf https://f.hubspotusercontent30.net/hubfs/8968533/WSE-2%20Dat...).

Has there been any indication that the LLMs released in the last few months use exotic hardware like this, or is it all "standard" hardware?
