JakeAl··on VCs are scared when they should be greedy
This. Now do government contractors!
JakeAl··on We've known how to prevent a school shooting for more than 20 years
Mass shootings and stabbings happen all the time. We only hear about them nationally when it's convenient.
JakeAl··on Ask HN: Feeling burned out at an early stage in my career
1. Take a vacation where you get away from everything you know for a few weeks. 2. Start planning your career. A job is a stepping stone, know where it is taking you and where you want it to take you. 3. Get a mentor and get on a path that takes you where you want to go. Have a plan and review it and yourself at least yearly like you are your own supervisor and career coach giving yourself a review and planning goals for the next year that take you where you need to be. Rinse and repeat until you die.
JakeAl··on Why I Quit Google’s WebAssembly Team, and How It Made Me Sick
Never underestimate the important of good leadership. A leader can recognize these things and a lot more. It seems like companies don't hire experienced project managers/managers anymore but try to get programmers to wear those hats because they think programmers won't respect someone who isn't a programmer even if they are tech savvy. I can't say I blame them as marketing and BAs seem to end up in the manager role and that's often much worse. There used to be a middle ground in the days before agile. Now it's like it doesn't matter because fail first and fast is the M.O. and "don't worry, we'll fix it in a future sprint after enough people complain."
JakeAl··on Omicron Variant as Deadly as Previous Waves After Adjusting for Comorbidities
The last stats I heard was then when you remove co-morbidities and existing medical conditions the deaths were less than 13.9% for at least the UK (2022 data) and in the US was less than 9.3%, but the latter was back at the beginning (May 2020). Follow Dr. John Campbell on YouTube and he goes into all the papers and research when it comes to covid and it's treatment.
JakeAl··on The World Order Reset
Wokeness explicitly applies and relies an ideology of Marx's Conflict Theory, a paradigm that divides the world into oppressors and the oppressed and focuses on framing individuals as members of a group to label them as such.

The woke are incapable of making important distinctions and treating people as individuals outside of such groups. Distinction is the basis of rationality. Equality requires that, and demands that individuals supercede groups in the application of law and opportunity.

That's why wokeness does not focus on individual equality, but group equity, putting the collective ahead of the individual and exiling individuals when they stand for themselves and not a given group. Democracy as Aristotle explained, is the majority ruling over the minority. In other words, mob rule. Democracy is only good when it is not ruling and making decisions that serve everyone, and not just the majority, equally. This he called a polity.

"The right kind of democracy, if you will, is a polity: An ideal democracy that governs for the interests of all, not just the leadership." https://fs.blog/aristotles-politics/

JakeAl··on Getting hired after fifty
For males over a certain age, your mental acuity drop may be related to decreasing testosterone levels. Have your levels checked out. Medication may give you back that edge you noticed you are missing.
JakeAl··on Top US corporations raising prices on Americans even as profits surge
This is definitely worth looking at deeper. I don't have the answers just questions about what made Japan different. Did they keep printing money/borrowing when they entered the death spiral (debt/GDP ratio >120%)? Did they have massive welfare programs? Did they have other massive spending by the government (military or number of government employees for example)? Did they have really high taxes? What makes Japan's circumstances different than our own, or in the past Argentina, or Greece, or <insert any nation that has had over 120% debt/GDP ratio in recent times here>.

I also think saying 29 of those years they were wrong is not accurate. The inflation hasn't been there BECAUSE the Fed kept it from happening. They've simply been letting the water build up behind the damn (while all tat printed money went to major companies and industries as the IOU was written in the taxpayer's name), and we're now at a point where there's no more road to kick the can down. We're at the end of the road. The debt/GDP ratio has been over 130% since 2020. That by definition means we're in an economic death spiral. That doesn't mean it's not reversible as other nations have demonstrated. Our death spiral becomes irreversible by 2028 and the nation insolvent by 2040 unless something out of the norm happens, like a balanced budget amendment, austerity, reduced spending, an increase in the GDP, the forgiving of our debt by China, all of the above. I'm pretty sure that's where The Great Reset was supposed to come in. I'm also pretty sure the banks aka the Market Makers were well aware of this timeline as stocks started ramping up for the biggest bubble ever a year before the debt was scheduled to breach 120% (the timeline has been public record since at least 2014 which is when I first saw it on CSPAN during the 2015 budget review meeting).

JakeAl··on Poll: Are you going to leave Twitter after Musk's acquisition?
If you think people on Twitter are crazy, go to your city council meetings. Especially if you live in a major city.
JakeAl··on Florida governor signs bill stripping Disney of self-governing authority
>as the company is actively attempting to sabotage his political moves I think you mean undermine his and the state's democratically legislated power and ability to represent the people of the state of Florida. It's that simple. Disney isn't even mentioned in the legislation, nor are the 6 other corporations affected beside Disney. They can try and fight it on legislative grounds, but if they try anything other than that they will open themselves up to outside discovery of all the things they have concealed while they have policed themselves, most notably crimes and their corporate liability related to children, guest safety, and environmental protection and hazards. Disney like one of those blurred out areas on Google maps when it comes to such inquiries because they police themselves. Unless they try to fight it on anything but procedural/administrative grounds. That's when they open themselves up to exposure.
JakeAl··on Elon has decided not to join our board
Joining the board limited his stock ownership to something like 14.1%. That's a deal killer when he can not be a board member and just keep buying up shares to take control.
JakeAl··on Some past Science News coverage was racist and sexist. We're deeply sorry
This is bollocks. Eugenics is simply controlled or selective breeding. It's like GMO, an overly stigmatized word that few know the actual meaning of. It's not all about pure-breeding humans and traits like an Aryan master race or franken-foods. Sure there are people labelled eugenicists who were racists or whatever that did that but their characterization of the word in this apology is something I hope they apologize for one day. Genetic engineers, gene therapists, and genetic counselors-- eugenicists-- interested in improving the quality of life for people would appreciate it.
JakeAl··on Ask HN: Starting a Career in Programming at 61?
I'm in the same boat. Really hard to find work despite 25 years of experience in software design and production for some of the worlds biggest companies. Everyone just wants labor, programmers, project managers or producers it seems. Can't find anything at my actual experience level. Lots of IT and programming jobs (all requiring X certification and X number of years experience in X industry with X language blah blah cloud this Salesforce that. It's all just software development in my experience and just more and more platforms. The same skills apply and picking up new software and platforms is trivial compared to say, learning and mastering a language as a programmer. I'm about ready to buy a van to live in by the river until I die. I just want to apply my experience as a leader of people who aren't really preparing the company or the employees for the future, but everything seems to be gig or contract work.

JakeAl··on DuckDuckGo “down-rank sites associated with Russian disinformation”
The same could be said of the US, especially since the NDAA made it legal for the government to use propaganda on the domestic population.
JakeAl··on DuckDuckGo “down-rank sites associated with Russian disinformation”
Back during the first Iraq war (Kuwait) my sociology class did an analysis of all the news to see how they reported it differently. We look at the 6:00 news on ABC, NBC, and CBS and I asked if we could also add CNN because this was when cable was still being adopted. What we learned was back then CNN largely reported the facts/observations with qualified statements and not much commentary at all, and all the other news outlets got the bulk of their facts (except for local news) from the CNN newswires/people on the ground and then fluffed them with their own subjective language. That was when CNN was just Headline News. They've really lost credibility since then. I'm not even sure if Headline News even exists anymore. It used to just be every 30 minutes the news cycled over and over and updated as new info came up.

JakeAl··on Ask HN: Any weird tips for weight loss?
Regular colonics.
JakeAl··on Supreme Court Supports Government in Blocking Torture Evidence
The government is legally above the law and constitution when they throw around the "state secrets" label. They can literally get away with anything.
JakeAl··on Nvidia hackers leak 190GB of sensitive data from Samsung
So does this mean we'll be getting some decent CFM for Samsung devices?
JakeAl··on Building a web app with no framework
I feel the same about single-page applications. Give me good old fashion static HTML and CRUD database calls on a single production server with a back-up server, development server and live-test mirror server and using 1995 hardware it could handle 250K simultaneous users easy. Things have gotten insanely bloated and big-tech dependent with a huge price tag to build and maintain.
JakeAl··on RT turns to Peter Thiel's Rumble after Big Tech companies block the network
Many non-state actors produce content for RT, including academics and celebrities, and almost all MSM outlets here in the US produce content sponsored/paid for by the US government. It's only propaganda when it's crafted by The State, otherwise it's just the marketing of ideas. The issue at hand is who is filtering/controlling what ideas people are allowed to have access to.

I recommend everyone read Neil Postman's "Amusing Ourselves to Death," and "How to Watch TV News."

JakeAl··on Why I will never buy another Samsung device
This is why sometimes it's worth it to get the protection plan/insurance. Sometimes tech just fails, and if it's out of the manufacturers warranty often if it can't be repaired for any reason they send you a replacement or the money for a replacement. Amazon offers such plans.

JakeAl··on Phone is still the best way to order pizza
I totally agree, especially when it comes to creating an account on a corporate/national app when the business I deal with is local only.

Having said that I think Domino's Pizza has a great process for ordering pizza on their web site where you build you own pizza and can then track the progress all the way to your doorstep.

JakeAl··on Spotify drops all Neil Young music after he demanded Joe Rogan removal
Th decision was not to drop Rogan.
JakeAl··on Ask HN: Is the Tech Bubble Crashing?
You can't exactly use tech stocks as a measure of investment as stock market performance is a measurement of trading and not tech investment. The major markets (NASDAQ, SP500, DJIA) are all manipulated/exploited by people who control the majority of the shares/price and are largely disconnected from actual company performance. Hence the "overvalued" tag that is often thrown around. Stock value does boost a company's market cap which does increase their credit limit allowing them to borrow more money to do bigger things though, which is important. But if they don't deliver and can't increase their value based on performance, it's just a ponzi scheme with regard to stock price.

Having said that, the Fed does also boost or squelch the ability of banks to lend to companies/their ability to increase performance not backed by actual profits and expenses (P/E). If you're an investor you look at P/E and the value of products. If you are a trader you look at stock price/performance almost exclusively. Traders trade both directions at all times (hedging long positions). Investors only play long positions. VCs seek to empower companies with potential.
