how can these same people accept that they are engaged in torture and in the interest of "national security" they want it covered up but balk at the idea that someone else might be doing just that. democracy. right.

I think the follow up argument to make is that withholding evidence as a "State Secret" constitutes spoliation of evidence and should be considered in favor of the plaintiff. If it is that important to hide how the evidence was acquired then it must be more important than acquiring a conviction. Better 100 guilty men go free than 1 innocent man and such.

The proof that even the free democracies are slowly falling in a "no-justice" freefall. Sadly.

Falling into? When was this supposed golden age of democracy where the US wouldn't suppress evidence of its war crimes and torture?

Or evidence of its war crimes and torture against its own citizens, contradicting its own constitutional requirements.

We already have despots running the country.

As far as I can tell, the CIA has operated outside of US law with no real repercussions for its entire history.

This is not a new development. The rule of law has always been a sort of aspirational target, not the real state of affairs.

All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others. It's not a new idea.

America is not a democracy in the sense of the word (people rule). Unless you only count the about a thousand of actual Americas rulers as people (some judges, some senators, president and a few others). Thats about 0.0003% of the people, far from democracy I would say.

Can you name more than 5 countries that would meet your definition of democracy?

Switzerland for example is hybrid regime, since people there have ways to veto actions and laws by tyrants. Still not a democracy but a step in the right direction. I am sure no country has democracy where everyone has a say in actions and laws, rather than a tiny tiny minority (no matter if they were born into it, appointed or “elected”)

The government is legally above the law and constitution when they throw around the "state secrets" label. They can literally get away with anything.
