JBReefer··on Leaving NYC for Nashville
I paid $1450 for a 1 bed that was >1000 sq feet in Jackson Heights and it was _beautiful_. It's just not the Village.
JBReefer··on Tumblr will ban all adult content on December 17th
Tumblr has been repeatedly valued at around $0, and I believe Yahoo did a huge write down at one point. I think they know this will kill the site and that's intentional. Tumblr has never been successfully monetized for various reasons, and occasionally generates bad press. It's sad - the "old internet" is quickly dying off. It basically leaves image boards, non-default Reddit, and SA.

I've heard a lot of people are back on Usenet these days? Discord really doesn't do it for me.

JBReefer··on Tumblr will ban all adult content on December 17th
Far Right + Far Left !== somewhere good, you just get Reddit (or WW2). You need sane people to have sane conversations.
JBReefer··on Ask HN: How do large companies handle access to critical databases?
In my experience, poorly - the number of default passwords, copied-because-i-don't-know-what-it-does configurations, weird setups, lack of backups, backups to a local disk, backups to a mounted locally disk, etc. I've seen is shocking.

The fact that anything works has gotten way weirder to me as I've gotten older - I've seen a bunch of codebases and persistence setups, and it all seems so fragile.

JBReefer··on Forced Out by Deadly Fires, Then Trapped in Traffic
People don't like to hear that, or that they shouldn't live places without natural water sources
JBReefer··on Indigenous women kept from seeing their newborns until agreeing to sterilization
Canada is so weird to me - you have Trudeau, who is fairly left wing, you have the controversial C-16/speech stuff (I don't know enough to comment here, but progressives seem to like it), and then you have the Tar Sands, which are so environmentally horrible it's remarkable. You have Trudeau pushing for NAFTA to have language protecting native peoples - which is very progressive - and then you have fucking forced sterilization? It's mind boggling.

It wouldn't be so weird to me if they didn't act holier-than-thou about the US, but at least Americans readily admit we're weird and fucked up.

JBReefer··on SoftBank’s debt obsession
I don't know if the government does, but plenty of individual states have investment funds or pension funds that do VC work. Apprenda, my old employer, was partially backed by the a New York State pension fund
JBReefer··on Israel silent as Iran hit by computer virus more violent than Stuxnet – report
Israel's war record also has to give Iran pause - Israel does not fuck around. The 6 day war embarrassed a ton of leaders in that part of the world.
JBReefer··on Arabic, a great language, has a low profile
Sicilian is still spoken a bit in the New York Metro area - a lot of New Jersey Italians that speak fluent Italian have trouble communicating with people in Italy, because it's Sicilian!
JBReefer··on gRPC-Web is going GA
Isn't this just WCF reborn? Contracts, codegen no one will use, etc
JBReefer··on Carbon Removal Technologies
If someone can figure out how to make money to reverse climate change, that will be the end of climate change. The whole problem is that it's hugely expensive and only impacts each of us a tiny tiny bit _today_
JBReefer··on Carbon Removal Technologies
This doesn't sound relevant to carbon fixation:

"Witches, Midwives, & Nurses, first published by the Feminist Press in 1973, is an essential book about the corruption of the medical establishment and its historic roots in witch hunters. In this new edition, Barbara Ehrenreich and Deirdre English have written an entirely new chapter that delves into the current fascination with and controversies about witches, exposing our fears and fantasies. They build on their classic exposé on the demonization of women healers and the political and economic monopolization of medicine. This quick history brings us up-to-date, exploring today's changing attitudes toward childbirth, alternative medicine, and modern-day witches."

JBReefer··on The internet is enabling a community of men who want to kill women
If you told me 5 years ago that incels would commit repeated massacres and Pepe would have a controversial page on Hillary Clinton's campaign site, I would never have believed you. Of all the words of tongue and pen...

JBReefer··on Facebook Says Hackers Stole Detailed Personal Data from 14M People
Companies that do 1 thing tend to do that thing well. Companies like Facebook or Google that do dozens tend to be sloppy.
JBReefer··on US military grounds entire fleet of F-35 jets
War is Boring
JBReefer··on Declassified documents show why the US and the USSR came close to war in 1973
You're both right because you're talking about local laws and GP is talking about the post-war order, which is held together by American hegemony. It's not mentioned in the article, but people have argued that Nixon (who has a lot in common with Trump in general) held things together basically the same way https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madman_theory
JBReefer··on Ask HN: What can be done to prevent a climate catastrophe?
People on HN seem to believe the default state of humanity is driving everywhere and living in the suburbs, when that's only true in particular parts of the US for the last 80 years or so. A frequent question I see about not owning a car is "well how could I possibly get groceries otherwise??" The only way we can address our individual footprint and our isolation crisis is to build real towns and cities again, but I'm doubtful.

Don't have a lot of hope for this one, people are willing to tell others to change their patterns but will rarely change their own. That way, you get woke points but don't have to do anything. Plus that Tesla looks GREAT in the driveway, especially when you consider that climate change is all everyone else's fault.

JBReefer··on Do we really live longer than our ancestors?
The Book of Genesis is probably around 3000 years old - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book_of_Genesis#Composition
JBReefer··on A tale of the unending hunt for dark matter
Dark matter/energy always sounds like a restatement of aether - unknowable and unreachable, conceived to fill gaps in the knowledge of the period. I'm probably wrong, but the parallels are strong.
JBReefer··on New autonomous farm wants to produce food without human workers
*In San Francisco. My friend lives exactly the lift GP describes, but in the Hudson River Valley, in a beautiful Victorian house (with roommates). He's also incredibly jacked now. It's totally possible.

JBReefer··on The Private Blockchain Fallacy
This is a good exercise that the other answers fail at the twist.
