Izmaki··on Let's Encrypt bans certificate usage in any US sanctioned territory [pdf]
Say what, now?

Anonymity and encrypted communication are two very, very different things. Have one but not the other and you're essentially handing off your private data incl. passwords to whoever that has a tap on the communication between you and the server can fetch them, too. Have the other but not the one and everyone will know who you are, but they can't eavesdrop.

Izmaki··on Siri AI
I wonder if the language support is the voice part of the assistant? It took a while (years) for Siri to speak my native language back then.
Izmaki··on Zig Zen Update
I'm wondering the same: why is this change significant enough to reach the frontpage on Hacker News?
Izmaki··on Danish Pension Blacklists SpaceX over 'Catastrophic Governance'
This sounds amazing until something needs replacement. Until data centers on earth has a 99.99% (or higher) level of autonomous operation with very minimal requirements to maintenance and part replacements, they're not sending anything into orbit...
Izmaki··on Search engines alternatives now that Google isn't Google anymore
I didn't know about https://duckduckgo.com/settings at all, thanks. I really liked the customization of "Startpage".

I'm also REALLY happy to see that you can actively disable not just adds but also suggestions to install tools/apps and newsletter requests. Thank you!

Izmaki··on Claude Code as a Daily Driver: Claude.md, Skills, Subagents, Plugins, and MCPs
I imagine that the companies that earn money from input and output tokens really, really like excessive skills because of the sheer amount of potentially pointless constraints and instructions being sent back and forth ("don't store passwords as plaintext", "always check for syntax errors" and other obvious guidelines).
Izmaki··on Search engines alternatives now that Google isn't Google anymore
I'm curious: what is your use-case for a search engine that justifies Kagi over free search engines? Are you not finding your results on page one, first try, with other engines?
Izmaki··on Mozilla to UK regulators: VPNs are essential privacy and security tools
By your logic it's also better if Ray-Ban and Oakley don't publicly state that UV light is dangerous and that people should use sunglasses if outside.

That sounds silly.

Izmaki··on Mozilla to UK regulators: VPNs are essential privacy and security tools
They also advocate for if not enforce HTTPS. Would this be bad if they were also a trusted CA selling signed TLS certs to companies?
Izmaki··on Mozilla to UK regulators: VPNs are essential privacy and security tools
I think North Korea is attempting to do this, for example by punishing not only the criminal but also their immediate family to a life-sentence in working camps, if the person commits severe enough crime.

I don't think it's as successful as it sounds on paper, from the comfort of our western society homes.

Izmaki··on Forking the Web
My moustache filter says I'm above 13, thankyouverymuch.
Izmaki··on Forking the Web
"Dillo Browser" was not what the first thing I read and wondered if me clicking the link was even a good idea... xD
Izmaki··on Is my blue your blue? (2024)
It’s 01:30 in the night you cannot just drop lyrics like that, I’ll have the song stuck in my head for hours.. :(

For this, you just lost The Game.

Izmaki··on Vercel April 2026 security incident
A "limited subset of customers" could be 99% of them and the phrase would still be technically true.
Izmaki··on Ask HN: Who is using OpenClaw?
I still haven't found an actual, useful scenario where something like OpenClaw would be a benefit to me. I don't regularly order arbitrary airplane tickets and I don't have a cluttered Desktop that I need AI to organize into folders. I don't run a YouTube channel with a "need" to do research on competitors and I don't get emails in a volume so large that I need automation to filter and summarize it, instead of just spending literally 10 seconds to delete my newsletters that I never read anyway.

I also don't trust AI which hallucinates answers 4/5 times that I ask it, for my technical work, thus I can't use it for PR reviews even if my company was OK with me feeling company property to it.

I also don't go grocery shopping random items and thus don't have a need to ask an assistant for "an inspiring and tasty recipe using the following ingredients".

I feel that OpenClaw and other similar "agentic" solutions are catered to me. But I also feel that I don't need any of it, because at the end of the day, it all just feels like a bunch of "Hello World" quality examples that cannot be applied to everyday life.

...heck, even a "get ready for work" assistant would be pointless, because I don't wake up and get ready with 20 minutes to spare, for some AI assistant to "recommend me the ideal time to leave my home, to arrive in time". Who does that? Who would sit around and do nothing for 10-15 minutes just because an AI agent told them that they didn't need to leave early?

OpenClaw & Friends feel quite useless.

Izmaki··on US national level OS-level age verification bill proposed
They already have the data and much more of it. This has nothing to do with “Big Corp” wanting to know how old their users are.
Izmaki··on I run multiple $10K MRR companies on a $20/month tech stack
What a useful "my hello-world script is faster than your hello-world script" example.
Izmaki··on Veracrypt project update
I always believed that rather than publicly stating that they were about to be arrested or worse, which may alert regular, non-tech-savy people, he sent a hidden message in the arguably horrendous recommendation of replacing his tool with BitLocker.

I think he was trying to scream “Run!” without actually screaming “run”.

Izmaki··on Veracrypt project update
Reminds me of when users of TrueCrypt were urged to just install BitLocker instead. Sus AF.
Izmaki··on Trust signals as sparklines for Hacker News
Great way to gatekeep new contributors trying to be helpful with news. Run the link through URL Scan if you’re paranoid…
Izmaki··on Danish government agency to ditch Microsoft software (2025)
The branch of the public sector I'm responsible for is moving towards Cloud Native and Open Source where it makes sense. It's an interesting journey but far from cheap.
Izmaki··on Danish government agency to ditch Microsoft software (2025)
The “that’s nice but Denmark is small” comment is getting tiresome. Whether the country had 6 million or 60 million the bureaucracy is the same. It’s not about the size or the economics, it’s about the message.

It won’t be long until the rest of the public sectors follow along. There has already been plenty of consideration and desire to follow through. What’s holding them back typically is not the desire to stay with Microsoft et. al., but the investment needed to make the switch away from a live system.

Izmaki··on I'd tell you a UDP joke…
This one is the only one among the 10+ I browsed through on the website and read in the comments that actually made me laugh. Good one! Thanks for sharing. :)
Izmaki··on NTP at NIST Boulder Has Lost Power
The ability for humankind to communicate across the entire globe at nearly 1/4 of the speed of light has drastically accelerated our technological advancement. There is no doubt that the internet is a HUGE addition to society.

It's not super important when compared to basic needs like plumbing, food, electricity, medical assistance and other silly things we take for granted but are heavily dependent on. We all saw what happened to hospitals during the early stages of the COVID pandemic; we had plenty of internet and electricity but were struggling on the medical part. That was quite bad... I'm not sure if it's any worse if an entire country/continent lost access to the Internet. Quite a lot of our core infrastructure components in society rely on this. And a fair bit of it relies on a common understanding of what time "now" is.

Izmaki··on Data Bank – Nuforc – Latest UFO Sightings
I wasn't, I just missed the "not" in your reply that was phrased as an agreement. :) My bad. Sleepy eyes.
Izmaki··on Data Bank – Nuforc – Latest UFO Sightings
I'd love to believe you, but as a European who - for some reason - never get these sightings unlike Americans, I find it hard to do so. Either our mysterious alien friends really love USA or you guys have some condition that the entire Europe does not, e.g., permissions to test military equipment without having to announce it to the public, let alone the freedom to move around in a large area without it becoming a political drama.

Imagine if the German military started doing unannounced missions in neighboring countries... now imagine if a military base in the US send a couple of fighter jets from one state to another state and back. Only one of those situations would give a cluster f** of international drama, thus "odd sightings" i.e. covert military operations could be more common in the US than the rest of the world.

I'd love to believe... but it always only happens in USA.

Izmaki··on Why aren't smart people happier?
Being pulled aside by management because your desire for correctness and high quality got you in trouble when you wanted to correct project management kind of sucks. Having your “ah, that’s probably easy” attitude makes you seem arrogant and as if you want to “show off” - even if the thing objectively speaking IS easy to you and even if you could do a better job in less time than your colleagues.

It’s a blessing but when people are envious and agree that your gift is just arrogance from ignorance, then the blessing turns into a curse.

I can solve virtually any technical challenge that I am presented, given enough time (usually 1/10th the time needed by my colleagues) and yet I seem to get in trouble more times than others for the reasons above.

(For ref. I work in IT as probably most here, with an IQ of 135+, i.e. top-1%)

Izmaki··on Slack has raised our charges by $195k per year
Tell Slack to go ** themselves, and move everything to a free platform that the teens and kids already use: Discord.
Izmaki··on I ditched Docker for Podman
That's just one way. The alternative is WSL 2 with Docker Engine.
