Izkata··on What is going on with ceiling fans
I think they're suggesting a lightbulb equivalent of going from USB-A connectors to USB-C. Replaceable bulbs in sockets that are just as easy to use, but with a smaller profile.
Izkata··on Why don't more developers “use the platform”?
> And React certainly doesn't seem afraid to make big or breaking changes, from fibers to suspense to hooks to context, so I don't think it is resistance to change at play here.

As far as I know React hasn't had any such breaking changes. Those were all added on top without removing anything. Class components without hooks still work fine, for example.

Izkata··on The last time my family was replaced by technology
> Uber Eats : They've been experimenting with ways to replace humans for this. I think the most likely scenario isn't those silly robots on the sidewalks but rather just a Waymo. [..] We lose the door-to-door convenience but I think a lot of people would take that trade to eliminate the cost of tips and paying the delivery person.

Amazon is already able to do deliveries for some packages by drone in some cities. This seems perfect for it.

Izkata··on 500k facial scans at UK stations yield no arrests, 1 false positive
Around here it is, and I'm pretty sure elsewhere too: https://codelibrary.amlegal.com/codes/chicago/latest/chicago...

> Mentally ill man murders a woman on the train in a Tier 2 city, immediate nationwide breaking news.

Unless this happened a second time, it wasn't really reported on much until after it blew up on social media.

Izkata··on Everybody’s home. No one’s coming over
GP appears to be using the Myers-Briggs definition instead of the Big 5 definition. It's popular but has no backing like Big 5.
Izkata··on Everybody’s home. No one’s coming over
> I like the definition of extrovert and introvert that says that extroverts are regain their energy by being in group whereas introverts regains there by being alone.

That's the Big 5 meaning, which has some scientific backing. The other one that basically just means social/shy comes from Myers-Briggs, which while popular isn't based on anything and is pretty much just pseudoscience.

Izkata··on Plunging test scores are a slow-moving catastrophe
> I live in Alaska, there were only like 3 months were things were actually curtailed in any meaningful way.

Here in Illinois it was over a year, possibly two in some places. The schools didn't return to in-person right away after the government mandates were lifted.

Edit:

> But mostly, I think it's the phones that are having the biggest impact on social development and probably on learning too.

Please re-read the comment from the other person you originally replied to.

(2nd edit: removed something based on a misread)

Izkata··on Plunging test scores are a slow-moving catastrophe
> I have 3 kids

So they got at least some of what a lot of kids missed out on: socialization.

With homeschooling, parents go out of their way to find other kids for theirs to socialize with, but during lockdowns this wasn't allowed (if the parents even had any idea about it, since it was forced on them and not something they chose to do).

Izkata··on Too AI; Didn't Read
Emotions were removed, clichés and meandering was added.
Izkata··on Git-bug: Distributed, offline-first bug tracker embedded in Git
The issue there was collaboration, one person would be on master and see no hint that a case was already being worked on (status, comments, etc all being different until the branch was merged). The other bullets, that put the information in different locations, were attempts to deal with this.

A few months ago there was another of these posted, called Epiq: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=48155570

My comment on there is about a surge in popularity of these over a decade ago, with a link to a previous comment about problems I remember them having that prevented them from being usable for most people ( https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=47956979 ), because of their intended design rather than an implementation issue. For example bullet 3 was a problem in one, that another tried to solve with bullet 2.

I don't have time right now to look at this one to guess if these apply, but might be interesting/useful for someone else.

Izkata··on Ideas on modernizing the open-source desktop
Yeah, it's an X thing. But on X, the highlight/middle-click clipboard is separate from the ctrl-c/ctrl-v clipboard, so you can hold two things at once when moving text around. IIRC this was just a historical quirk rather than any intentional design, and I think in Wayland they duplicated the controls but also combined them into a single clipboard.
Izkata··on 'That's so AI ' What gen Alpha's biggest insult tells us
Median income probably also matches closer to Millennials, not Z and certainly not Alpha.
Izkata··on Samsung accidentally freezes its smart fridges with a software update
Having seen how an electric oven fails, I don't ever want to run it when I'm not at home. The heating element turns into a sparkler and it looks (and sounds) like fireworks.

Other way around: Artisan is the negative one with implied pretentiousness, craftsman is the positive one that implies high skill.
Izkata··on Apple has added persistent 'ads' to iOS, and it's driving users crazy
> Android has more ads if you buy it through a carrier

Or just none? I'm not doing anything special and the only ads I ever see are from some games.

Izkata··on A Necessary History of the Oddest Letter: W
It's the first part of its name, "double-u".

H doesn't contain its sound either, and G has only one of the two sounds it makes (and it's not the one unique to it).

Izkata··on English: A vs. An
I think you missed the joke: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danish_pastry

> A Danish pastry (sometimes shortened to Danish)

Izkata··on English: A vs. An
Yeah, definitely inflection-based. A more relaxed one would indicate "a small amount", which for the opposite could be directly swapped with "many".
Izkata··on AI chatbots are becoming experts at changing people's minds
I'm not quite sure I'd phrase it like this, but it's close to what I think: Even back in 2023 or so people outside of tech would regularly claim the singularity already happened and LLMs were sci-fi style advanced superintelligences, so whatever they said was obviously right.
Izkata··on Everybody's Lost Their Minds
I've seen this happen to multiple co-workers, in the span of months. Two were laid off so I don't know how it's going with them, and another has backed off but not fully abandoned AI code. I'm resisting it entirely because of these problems.
Izkata··on Anecdotally, programmers dislike "reduce"
That one is built in:

  sum([1, 2, 3]) == 6
Izkata··on Learning Programming in an Age of LLMs
If we're talking about what's in the name, then keep going: it's a language yes, but it's a markup language, not a programming language.

> but no comments about the software quality, which for a lot of SaaS has gone downhill. It’s why they emphasized LoC and number of PRs but hide the number of bug tickets.

And here's some numbers (gathered from telemetry over time) showing that: https://www.faros.ai/blog/ai-acceleration-whiplash-takeaways

Here's someone's breakdown (with some things from the full report that aren't in the Faros blog post), showing how it's even worse than first impressions: https://unessays.substack.com/p/talk-is-cheap

Izkata··on People who can't picture anything are rewriting the science of imagination
> If the gap were so wide it seems like there would be more obvious giveaways in human behavior.

There was a couple who streamed on youtube who reacted to meme compilations, and years ago one of the things they reacted to referenced a similar topic. During that stream everyone learned the woman has no inner voice (including herself, she'd never even thought about it before and had no idea an inner voice was a thing).

While he was asking her what it was like, he brought up the voiceovers in tv and movies that were supposed to represent a character's thoughts. She had no idea that's what it was supposed to be, and always just thought it was some nebulous narrator describing what was going on.

I think any such signals would be a similar "wrong mental model" situation where you can usually only tell by poking at it with very specific questions or actions.

Izkata··on I resigned from Anthropic today
The way the most recent season of the show ended it looks like humanity may have been misled about the war, so it may end up fitting that more closely once they're done (I haven't read any of the books, just going on your comment).
Izkata··on There's a new "Google Jail" for independent wikis
I have no idea what happened behind the scenes, but Memory Alpha used to have its own hosting and was migrated to the hosted wikia, I think between 2010 and 2015. The old domain still redirects: https://memory-alpha.org/
