InvisibleUp··on Come back, c2.com, we still need you
There was a mirror at https://kidneybone.com/c2/wiki/ without the SPA stuff, but that seems to be 503'd right now. (And even if it wasn't, I don't think it has a root page; you'd need to type in one of the page URLs manually.)
InvisibleUp··on Electronics Lab Bench Setup Guide
Regarding point 1, USB-TMC is just as good as LXI, really. Completely industry standard, just like LXI or GPIB. LXI is great if you need it, but you probably don't if everything's on the same desk.

And there's even more instruments that just create a virtual COM port over USB and allow SCPI commands over that, and that's perfectly fine. You just have to configure it via something like [Keysight's Connection Expert program](https://www.keysight.com/us/en/lib/software-detail/computer-...) first.

InvisibleUp··on I want to talk about WebGPU
It looks as if it was simply drawn in Inkscape or a similar program.
InvisibleUp··on I Quit Reddit in 1 Day
They already killed the lightweight mobile version at i.reddit.com last month or so. I wouldn't be surprised if old.reddit.com is on the chopping block within the next few years.
InvisibleUp··on Gameboy Doctor: debug and fix your gameboy emulator
For people who want to get started with hobbyist emulator development, the Game Boy is the simplest "real console" that they can get started with, complete with tons of commercial games, community support, an active homebrew scene, existing emulators, etc. Even easier than that is the CHIP-8, but that's arguably too simplistic, and too limited in scope.
InvisibleUp··on Ask HN: Is RSS dying? Or coming back?
RSS doesn't work all that well across multiple devices, such as a desktop and a mobile phone. You can subscribe to them on both, sure, but they won't be synced with each other.

Apps such as Google Reader and such resolve that problem, but the death of Google Reader really shook a lot of people's trust in RSS, I think. Plus now RSS has to compete with social media feeds, which are where a lot of people are looking for updates already.

InvisibleUp··on Show HN: Typewaiter, the typewriter that doesn't wait
In the second link, it seems the typewriter writes wherever your mouse cursor is pointing.
InvisibleUp··on 7-zip 22.00 – APFS, Posix TAR, high precision timestamps
It would be nice if 7-zip added support for the new Windows 11 context menu. It requires that each context item is registered to an application and gets removed when the app is uninstalled, instead of the current free-for-all. [1] There's a fork, NanaZip, that adds this and a few more features, although the way it's structured makes it a non-trivial patch. [2]

InvisibleUp··on Viz Studio: code-based live animation editor
There's also VIZ Media, the manga publishing company, to confuse things even further.
InvisibleUp··on DuckDuckGo “down-rank sites associated with Russian disinformation”
It's worth noting that both of those examples were from the opinion section. Those aren't intended or required to be objective truth. And even then, they're just commenting on what Congress's position was at the time.
InvisibleUp··on Procrastinatory Doom Loops
Here is another excellent write-up on the struggle that ADHD can be: https://gekk.info/articles/adhd.html
InvisibleUp··on Procrastinatory Doom Loops
While the analogies in these articles are great, from personal experience, the second article's tips on how to beat procrastination are abysmal. Yes, breaking large steps into small chunks is good advice, but your goal should not be to live in a constant state of stress and anxiety by setting up "panic monsters". That's just a recipe for getting yourself burned out and becoming a "disastinator".

What I would instead suggest is reducing your workload, resting, and if that fails to fix the problem, seeing a medical professional to check for ADHD or other executive dysfunction issues. (It also really does bother me that Tim Urban never even mentioned that "procrastination" is known in the medical community as "executive dysfunction" and that clinical treatments are an option. Not saying that it's the root of all procrastination issues, but for major problems, it's worth looking at.)

InvisibleUp··on DuckDuckGo's daily search queries surpassed 100M, a 47% increase
Portland, OR has them on billboards and the radio. I'm assuming they're everywhere at this point.
InvisibleUp··on The Third Web
I have found that left-leaning techies (or at least the ones I've run into) seem much more interested in federated options such as Mastodon or the IndieWeb; distributing the costs of web app infrastructure into something local and negligible (ex: just running on a Raspberry Pi) and creating a whole network out of those, with moderation, administration, etc. done on a per-instance basis.

Granted, there's a few problems with the federation system (mainly that finding an instance whose admin you agree with can be daunting; Mastodon being a clone of Twitter and all its flaws; etc.) but I don't think they'd be solved by adding blockchain technology.

InvisibleUp··on Firefox is the alternative to a Chrome hegemony
They're referring to https://www.engadget.com/2017-12-16-firefox-mr-robot-extensi..., an event that occurred 5 years ago, was immediately rolled back after launch, and hasn't happened again.
InvisibleUp··on The metaverse is already here – it's Minecraft
The thing is, this was tried already with VRML in the 90s. And that totally flopped, because as it turns out, people would rather not deal with the clunkiness of excess skeuomorphism when they can instead just type in a text box or click on a button. Perhaps actual VR headsets could ease the pain of that, but it would have to be incredibly good for it to be a preferable alternative to just directly producing/consuming the relevant data via text messages, video chats, etc.

On that note, I feel that Microsoft has a better approach here of just "Teams but in VR", a nice simple scope compared to trying to reinvent the entire internet.

InvisibleUp··on A Solarpunk Manifesto
A lot of solarpunk art and such is about the exact opposite: reducing dependence on cars and fossil fuels and building local, sustainable communities. You're not ever going to see a strip mall or a bedroom neighborhood in a solarpunk utopia, and often times beyond public infrastructure there's not a big emphasis on high-tech living like there is in, ex: cyberpunk
InvisibleUp··on Learn American Sign Language Fingerspelling with Machine Learning
A lot of these sign languages were developed before the Internet or any easy mass communication via video. Each region developed their own language, and at this point it's so ingrained into local cultures that trying to get every sign language user to switch to some international language would be like trying to get everyone to switch to Esperanto. It's not happening.
InvisibleUp··on A salt monopoly could spike car accidents in the Midwest
Another alternative would be to invest much more in rail-based transportation methods, because iirc they don't need salting. Also, they'd avoid the issue of needing to educate every driver on how to avoid slipping and sliding in the winter.
InvisibleUp··on Money corrupts; bitcoin corrupts absolutely
> Why bother when there is no money involved

Because you want to make something useful and helpful for the world? Personal satisfaction? Passion? Necessity?

Granted, those are no arguments to work for free in a world where operating a business and keeping yourself fed cost money, but if somehow those weren't concerns, I can assure you people would still have plenty of motivation to innovate still.

InvisibleUp··on The tree-based approach to organizing documentation sucks
Arguably, if external (not comment-based) documentation is important, it would make sense to hire a technical writer whose sole job is to ask questions about the codebase and maintain proper documentation.
InvisibleUp··on Reddit: One of social media's oldest companies is also its most undervalued
https://i.reddit.com is the old mobile layout, and it still works fine for basic browsing and commenting.
InvisibleUp··on Who Is Still Buying VHS Tapes?
Try https://old.reddit.com/r/assholedesign/comments/crqx8r/the_s...

FYI, an archived post on Reddit means that it's older than 6 months and can't be commented on.

InvisibleUp··on Who Is Still Buying VHS Tapes?
Something I'm surprised wasn't brought up is the demand for recordable tapes. There's quite an active collector's scene for tapes that might contain old TV airings, commercials, bumpers, etc. Often these end up archived online, as a sort of civic duty of preservation. In addition, blank tapes are useful for creating a specific lo-fi visual style for videos and images.
InvisibleUp··on Remembering Windows 3.1 themes and user empowerment
This MSDN article (which starts by recounting a day in 1995) backs your theory up: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/previous-versions/ms364048(...
InvisibleUp··on Ditherpunk: The article I wish I had about monochrome image dithering
Another good article about dithering algorithms is https://www.freesion.com/article/3406137250/. It goes through most of the matrix-based dithering algorithms, including the more obscure ones.
InvisibleUp··on Ask HN: What are you surprised isn’t being worked on more?
I think a large part of this (in the USA, anyways) is due to how modern cities are structured.

It used to be, 100 or 200 years ago, that your workplace, your home, and your usual hang-out place were all within reasonable walking distance of each other. It wasn't a huge deal to go out and meet new people, as you'd naturally bump into them every day.

Nowadays we have a large portion of people in bedroom communities, isolated in a sea of houses. They drive in isolated cars to their workplaces, swing by to get some Starbucks on the way in, and that's the extent of their social interaction. Apart from libraries and parks, there's not many places that you can regularly go and just "hang out" without spending money just to exist in that space. It's incredibly easy to go for weeks or months without any substantial social contact outside of work or your few neighbors.

I feel like this is a reason why internet organizations and social media have exploded in popularity, for that matter. It's the new "default place" to hang out and get social interaction, for better or for worse.

(I expanded on this in an article I wrote, https://invisibleup.com/articles/31/, if you want to check that out.)

InvisibleUp··on The Guy I Almost Was (1998)
As a personal anecdote, I'm a college student who started at community college, worked during the summers, and even worked during the semester at jobs paying over $15/hr. Despite all of that, despite rarely if ever spending any money on "fun" things, I'm $30,000 in debt. Tuition and rent are just that expensive now. It's almost impossible to save up when you're throwing just about every dollar you're making just to keep yourself afloat.
