Ingaz··on People paid to train AI are outsourcing their work to AI
Today when I see misspells in articles I think: - they forgot to spell check - but at least it's human

I suppose robots will soon do mistakes intentionally

Ingaz··on MDMA moves from club drug to real therapy
It was meant as first aid for treating scratches and similar not serious traumas. It makes blood curdle faster. So instead of applying plaster you just press pencil along scratch and bleeding stops
Ingaz··on Why not tell people to “simply” use pyenv, poetry or anaconda
There a lot of way to produce self-contained binaries but .. there are a lot of buts.

My hopes in PyOxider path.

Look at Anki SRS build

Ingaz··on MDMA moves from club drug to real therapy
More than that: MDMA is kind of "anti-addictive" drug.

You try it first and feel that "MDMA magic". You try it again and yes, you still feel something pleasant but the magic is lost. Most probably forever.

I heard it many times and experienced myself.

In my late 20s MDMA did something wonderful for me. It was like going from BW interlaced 320p to TrueColor 4K.

But it was 3-5 times most. Every 2-3 years I tried again but no luck

Ingaz··on MDMA moves from club drug to real therapy
But for another purpose: it was intended to stop bleeding. It was manufactured in form of pencil.

Psychoactive properties were discovered later

Ingaz··on Could seaweed be the 'fastest and least expensive' tool to fight climate change?
Hm. Is that seaweed is edible by other organisms?

Then: more food -> more organisms -> more CO2

It's a level of middle school

Ingaz··on Solar will soon eclipse other forms of energy generation
I don't think it's a positive news. Instead of eliminating deserts let's make them even more terrible so there will be no hope in future to make them green
Ingaz··on Rye: Flask author's new project for Python bootstrapping
I encountered problems with dependencies in python projects only when AI/ML libraries were used pytorch/scikit-learn/etc

NPM on the other hand: it broke in every project and in trivial cases. E.g. upgrade of postgresql lib.

I hope that deno/smth other will make possible to forget npm finally

Ingaz··on Dutch journalist who writes critically on China targeted in intimidation scheme
I think "Stealing IP" phase finished for China a long time ago. Like for Japan of 70s

I can speak only from my experience.

In 2000s we heard that Huawei GSM is copycat of Erricson and Huawei CDMA is Qualcomm.

I had very limited experience with both GSM and CDMA switches - I saw nothing similar.

I can't say for sure about CDMA but Huawei GSM was certainly different from Erricson switches I saw

Ingaz··on Dutch journalist who writes critically on China targeted in intimidation scheme
"Free trade" with China ended many years ago. Just look what they did with Huawei in pretense of security.

If that's free trade - then I'm Santa Klaus

Ingaz··on SQL is dead – long live Prisma
Oh, no. Here we come again.

SQL is just an API.

If you don't provide this API - OK, that's your decision.

Maybe that's a correct decision for your system.

Maybe you'll decide to add this API in future.

By itself API could not be wrong or right - it could be suitable or not suitable for task.

Ingaz··on What Is Systems Programming, Really? (2018)
IMO the best answer is Alexandrescu: "A systems programming languages must be able to allow you to write your own memory allocator in it."

Without any philosophy, clear and concise.

Ingaz··on I Thought I Was Saving Trans Kids. Now I’m Blowing the Whistle
South-Eastern Asia are forerunners in transgender. Traditions are from ancient times. "Lady boys" in Thailand are not something rare.

Another "leader" - Iran. Muslim authorities are strongly contra for homosexualism but gender correction is a right thing

Ingaz··on I Thought I Was Saving Trans Kids. Now I’m Blowing the Whistle
"Gender dysphoria" - it's a kind of "body dysphoria" - right?

I have such dysphoria whole my life: why I don't have body of Schwarzenegger?

And don't laugh at me: it's actually source of many psychological problems, it's quite painful.

But everybody feels the same. Women even more

Ingaz··on I Thought I Was Saving Trans Kids. Now I’m Blowing the Whistle
"People are strange

When you estranged

Faces look ugly

When you're alone"

J. Morisson

(Everybody is strange and weird in their own ways)

Ingaz··on I Thought I Was Saving Trans Kids. Now I’m Blowing the Whistle
Sorry but no.

We're not living in computer game or virtual reality.

Technology still far from providing us freedom to change our bodies as we want.

It's not about even transgender operations - we can't achieve even smaller goals: to be more healthy, stronger, more beateaful, younger or more mature.

Nobody likes themselves in current state - you, me , my son, my parents, everybody.

Transgender operations should not be taken lightly because they are not transgender in reality.

The one who decided on such path should that it's something heroic in self-modification of such scale.

They'll pay a lot without any guarantee they will earn something.

I think that 100 clinics .. sorry, strong words: I think it's a crime.

Literally. Those "doctors" are not helping weak and unhappy, they're selling what they can't provide, they make people even more unhappy

Ingaz··on Is Google’s 20-year search dominance about to end?
Now is a good time for newcomers.

At least I hope so.

Ingaz··on Is Google’s 20-year search dominance about to end?
Actually Youtube is not so bad.

Youtube Music is really .. strange.

It looks wrong/outdated everywhere.

Generated playlists (recomendations) are always (for days/weeks) the same. Not a bit randomization. It feels like they were approved by party commitete for years.

I don't understand why they decided social network in music service.

Ah hell. CUE-lists are still too novice technology for them.

I still think that last.fm 15 years ago was the best music service.

Ingaz··on Is Google’s 20-year search dominance about to end?
I think that ChatGPT3 does not matter a lot.

But a lot of people fed up with Google and will be glad to try something different.

It's like when Apple came and eat 15-20% of market of notebooks.

Dominance of Microsoft still not ended.

Actually I suspect that Yandex search is better - I like how they preview answers for technical questions. Picture search - seems that Google is the worst.

Maybe it's time to start search different topics in different engines.

Hm. Actually AI could help to implement such functionality

Ingaz··on The C juggernaut illustrated (2012)
Even right now rust is quite adopted in PG community.

Looking on trend I expect that in near future it will be even more: - extensions - I expect rust to become first choice - core postgresql - I expect that rust to appear first in pg tools and then in postgres itself

Ingaz··on The C juggernaut illustrated (2012)
For me it was the other way: I learned programming in C and I loved and that's it's "the bestest"

But my first work was in Delphi. I've grown a lot as a programmer exploring VCL, professional tools but I still thought that C and C++ are superior.

My second work was in C. I was happy.

But then .. I started to see that not everything so beatyful.

It was like meeting with a girl you had a crush as teenager but now .. she's just normal

Ingaz··on The C juggernaut illustrated (2012)
Excuse me, but where do you see difference between C and Pascal?

Of course: curly braces and BEGIN-END and 'for' is much more elegant but conceptually they are the same.

Borland it demonstrated with CBuilder and Delphi.

Sometimes I wrote program in both of them.

Ingaz··on The C juggernaut illustrated (2012)
I like D.

Book by Alexandrescu was like a fantasy novel for young programmers in company where I worked.

One of us discovered this book and tell others. A bit later everybody was "infected".

Mostly javers and dotnetters and it was constant "Wow! It's possible to do such way? Why we don't do that?"

So, you influenced a lot of my friends in a right way.

Thank you!

Ingaz··on The C juggernaut illustrated (2012)
Look on databases today.

Especially on that area of Posrgresql mutants: similar ideas came to a lot of great minds: yugabyte, neondb, cockroach DB, timescaledb, even Amazon (Aurora) an MS here.

They are trying to do different things but common: - they're all tweaking storage in very strange directions - compatibility with core postgres - importance on top (timescale is still an extension to PG) - they all trying to achive a goal of cloud-native DB

And one thing is common: Rust! (cocroachdb are still on golang but they are exception)

And if look what's going inside core postgres you will discover that almost all APIs of PG are duplicated in Rust so in future we'll see quite rusty PG

Ingaz··on MDMA and psilocybin are approved as medicines in Australia
I had the same demons in past.

It's highly individual so can't be recommended but for me switching to:

- first to flupirtine which is legal in my country. It has "liver toxicity" but .. ha! comparing to alcohol it's less toxic

- and then to some ..khm.. illegal drugs

worked.

Ingaz··on MDMA and psilocybin are approved as medicines in Australia
It's very possible.

It worked for me. I had a period in my life of sliding slowly to alcoholism.

Ingaz··on MDMA and psilocybin are approved as medicines in Australia
It's actually could be other way.

There is an anecdotic evidence that bad trips on first intake are more frequent with lower doses of psychedelics than higher.

So it's very possible that those therapeutic sessions will be mind-shattering experiences and not like going to discotheque with friends.

Ingaz··on Production Twitter on one machine? 100Gbps NICs and NVMe are fast
Can you explain me what exactly meant by "success of Twitter"?

It's not sarcasm, I have twitter account but I never understood hype about twitter.

I see nothing in twitter from technical POW, closed twitter protocol looks very strange, they banned Trump, they were profitable in 2021, Elon Musk bought them for ~44 bln.

Maybe sellout of company with problems for such price is success.

Ingaz··on Production Twitter on one machine? 100Gbps NICs and NVMe are fast
I think that the main point of OP is that it's possible to serve production load using just one server.

I did not looked into source code yet but I suppose that OP if not implemented already than there should ideas for implementation.

In addition: from my POV implementation of scaling for such service should be trivial: - sharding of data between instances by a criteria (e.g. regional) or by hash - configure network routing

I think it should work

Ingaz··on Ask HN: How many of you are open to Piracy again?
The stupidest thing was that a lot of youtube channels in Russia were not monetized by views, they relied on subscriptions.

WH40K channels particularly: they don't have large audience, it's a hobby not for everybody but board-games fans usually earn more than average.

So "sanc you" hit the most on those absolutely apolitical guys.

They were apolitical before, they're apolitical even more now.

What was changed: - every significant channel is still alive - youtube lost their fraction of paymenents - now everything goes without them - channel owners .. I suppose they lost a bit of income. Now they rely on online donations more than it was previously

I don't understand what was the idea behind all that.

>> Russia no longer being able to watch shows demonstrates what 'content' is now about : 'content' that consumers pay for. I suppose that you did not understood: I'm able to watch *everything* now and it's the same as before. Nothing changed for me.

The real problem today is to find something interesting. Something that worth it's time to see. It's not a lot in 2022 - 5 fingers enough to count
