IndrekR··on Get the location of the ISS using DNS
Considering the ISS orbits in ~90 minutes, the 15 minute TTL is quite a long time.
IndrekR··on 2025 Iberia Blackout Report [pdf]
Not only from 0W, but from negative capacity (max charging power) to positive capacity (max discharging power).
IndrekR··on Potatoes in the Mail
Have mailed live queen bees in Europe as well. Funniest was when receiving some (I think it was from Denmark to Estonia before we joined the EU) and one delivery got stuck in customs due to unpaid alcohol tax — someone had misread “Live Bees” as “Live Beer”. Fortunately this was cleared out within two days and bees were still alive (but a little short on food).
IndrekR··on How much do you think it costs to make a pair of Nike shoes in Asia?
> If you get sets designed in China and made at the same factories that make Lego bricks, they're like 1/3 the cost.

Lego does not outsource brick making. They tried it out back in 2005 with Flextronics in Hungary and got a painful lesson. Lego runs all their factories themselves now.

From PCB perspective, LPDDR5(X) interface is quite different from regular DDR5. Same with DDR4 and LPDDR4. Source: have designed few boards with different memory interfaces.
IndrekR··on The race is on to build the most complex machine
It is funny how “the race is on” when we have ASML/ZEISS monopoly in this sector.

IndrekR··on Reintroductions of beavers into the wild in several parts of England
Population control. Mostly hunting and demolishing dams. Beavers went extinct where I live in 1841. Reintroduction started in 1957. By now there is a very healthy population that stabilised around year 2000.
IndrekR··on Harvest the sun twice: Agrivoltaics promises sustainable food, energy and water
Almost 100% of the electricity you use indoors will be converted to heat (with few exceptions like charging batteries) that needs to be removed from the room to be able to live there. 150kW is a lot of power.
IndrekR··on Harvest the sun twice: Agrivoltaics promises sustainable food, energy and water
Interesting. That is like 52 sqm per unit, which is 2.9 kW/sqm — three times higher power density than the solar irradiance on earth surface. If this is used at full power, how are the rooms cooled? (most energy gets converted to heat in typical use-cases)
IndrekR··on Harvest the sun twice: Agrivoltaics promises sustainable food, energy and water
Sure there are reasonable limits. Where, is another matter. For example, I can not imagine a reasonable use-case for 1MW power-line per single apartment.
IndrekR··on Electronic devices used for car thefts set to be banned
Not just high end and insurance. In EU 100% of new cars have GPS installed. This is used for intelligent speed assist and eCall that are now mandatory.

IndrekR··on Estonia to disconnect from the Russian-run electricity network on Saturday
2024 average electricity price in Estonia was 0.08727 €/kWh. There was no trading with Russia during this time. This is open data. I have no idea where you get the 0.26USD figure.

IndrekR··on Estonia to disconnect from the Russian-run electricity network on Saturday
Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia (in that order) will disconnect from grids in Königsberg (Kaliningrad), Belarus and Russia (in this order). After that the area will be working as isolated grid for 33h, after which the grids will be connected to synchronization link between Lithuania and Poland. Königsberg will remain a grid-island. IndrekR··on Aluminum Batteries Outlive Lithium-Ion with a Pinch of Salt
Lithium tetrafluoroborate and hexafluorophosphate are quite common ingredients in lithium battery electrolytes.
IndrekR··on Human brain samples contain an entire spoon's worth of nanoplastics, study says
It would be interesting to see chemical analysis of those particles. Most common in the environment seem to be tyre particles (by a large margin), polyesters (textiles), polystyrene and polyethylene (both from packaging and single use utensils/plates/cups). Wonder if it is a different distribution in human body.

The course was S818.

IndrekR··on Sky-scanning complete for Gaia
And Gaia also has a downlink speed of approx 3Mbps. So it will process as much as possible on board and just send down less than 20 pixels per each star imaged. That is why you can not get a direct image out of it.
IndrekR··on Sky-scanning complete for Gaia
It takes about 14 pictures of each star during orbit (which is quite close to Earth’s orbit around the Sun), so approximately once per month, and then compares those to calculate the star’s distance from the parallax.
IndrekR··on Sky-scanning complete for Gaia
For real data you can use Gaia ESA archive: https://gea.esac.esa.int/archive/

I went to study MSc in Space Science and Technology as a hobby few years ago. In one course (2022) we had an assignment to find Supernovae from recent Gaia data (Python code). Then made sure this is observable by University’s robotic telescope (and compliant with local weather forecast). Next requested the observation from the telescope and if successful, received the pictures next day. Had to analyse the results as well. It surprised me how much data there actually is available in quite open format from ESA missions.

Controlling remote telescope few thousand kilometres away was also a nice experience.
