Grow up, and quit attempting to apply and project your moralism and sexism to other cultures.

You should ask your nephew how it is going. As an adult.
Icedcool··on A Floating Mass of Fire Ants in Texas
I'll take the risk. Lyme's disease is a life long issue. Fire ant stings last about a week at the most.

Well said.

I present the Streisand effect: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Streisand_effect

That prolonged suppression only works specific environments where control is total.

The USA is not that, and censorship attempts often provide further platform for the information.

Icedcool··on Peanut allergy cured in majority of children in immunotherapy trial
What I understand is that no, because the probiotic is just a digestive support and used in the study as being a 'supportive' agent. The real actionable item is adding the allergen intentionally and increasing the dose over time.
Icedcool··on I’m an Ex-Google Woman Tech Leader and I’m Sick of Our Approach to Diversity
"In the name of diversity, when we fill quotas to check boxes, we fuck it up for the genuinely amazing women in tech."

Awesome. A plea towards hiring based on quality, rather than quotas.

Towards a group that is judged by the content and quality of their character rather than some of the variation of an attempt to combat discrimination through discrimination.

Icedcool··on IPv6 Adoption
I work for a major university hospital in IT, and when IPv6 was enabled as a default additional component to IPv4, it caused all kinds of hell.

The issues were generally around the OS prioritizing IPv6 over IPv4 which a lot of applications aren't ready for.

I know IPv6 is more secure, better, conditions your hair for you, but I am not excited to move IPv6 forward with our network.

This is yet another example of a need for some level of a bill of rights for our online lives/information.

Something that guarantee's proper and fair usage, with privacy. The decision making of which I'm sure would be a long and deep debate.

If someone stuck an rfid tag in your ear, and tracked where you moved and what you did, I would expect some compensation for that information. Yet we get cookies attached to our browsers, we are profiled and tagged to watch everything that we do online.

The de-regulation of the consumer information protection is important in that it is bringing attention to a bigger issue. The ISP's just want to do the same thing other companies have been doing all along.

Icedcool··on Author of ‘Sapiens’ on how meditation made him a better historian
Depends what kind of meditation. For the practice the author is talking about (vipassana) It became much more enjoyable and that didn't decrease the benefits I got. It moved beyond working through letting go of patterning, into understanding the nature of my human-ness and being able to work with that better(insight). And... I'm certainly not done with patterning haha....

I do think it starts to S curve on the benefits received against time committed. When you get to that point though, your overall life will be more than likely at a fantastic point.

Icedcool··on Unless You’re Oprah, ‘Be Yourself’ Is Terrible Advice (2016)
The worst thing that can happen, is that it'll work.Because then you have to keep it up. Not to mention, all the friends you have, people you connect with don't like you, but like this person you think you have to be.

You create your own hell.

Icedcool··on Unless You’re Oprah, ‘Be Yourself’ Is Terrible Advice (2016)
The author sounds like a 'fake it till you make it' type. Personally, I'm not a fan of that style of self improvement as it required so much work for me.

The problem with 'acting as if' is, say it works. Then you have to keep it up. So you gain all these friends, success, etc because you are acting other than how you are, and you only affirm that you have to be something other than what you are to get all those things. By trying to 'fix' the problem, you support it.

It becomes it's own hell.

My problem with his arguments is he is making sweeping assumptions about both 'high self monitor's' and 'low self monitor's', and blanket statements that immediately put his argument out of touch with reality.

It just seems like he doesn't understand the topic, because it didn't help him.

Icedcool··on Unless You’re Oprah, ‘Be Yourself’ Is Terrible Advice (2016)
Well put critique.
Icedcool··on Eating less and more than needed on alternate days prolongs life (2006)
Thanks for sharing.

I've taken up 24 hour fasts once a week, and have seen a ton of benefits. From increased mental clarity, to weight loss, and body overall feels better.

I kicked it off because I'm big into taoism and it supports my practices.

You could try intermittently adding cold showers to support your weight loss. (The benefits of cold showers I've seen are a ton, and I'm not totally sold on that it is consistently good for everyone.)

Or you could attempt ketosis style diets on the days you are fasting. That would be as simple as when you are intermittently fasting, to eat fats only, instead of protein or grains.

Good luck!

Icedcool··on How a French scholar was treated at US airport
Lying down and taking it is a negative opposite action to take(which isn't suggested), of which there are a tremendous amount of alternatives that have better outcomes.

Icedcool··on Raising the American Weakling
"One thing I have noticed: There are no 55- to 70-year-old powerlifters in the gym. But there are old bodybuilders who've been lifting for 40+ years with only the rarest of injuries."

I've noticed this as well, and I've heard it correlated to having an aim in the gym vs sticking to your regimen. That the body builder has an aim, and if something hurts a bit they'll work around it and let it heal. While a powerlifter will push through it (sticking to their routine) inevitably ending in injury.

The point being, don't give up power lifting.. but listen to your body and move away from the PUSH IT/Deviation from routine is failure, kind of attitude.

The idea is explored here by the glute boss, Bret Contreras: https://www.t-nation.com/training/why-bodybuilders-are-more-...

Icedcool··on Ubiquiti all the things: How I fixed my dodgy Wi-Fi
> I got a variety of responses including that I should install the open source dd-wrt firmware... No, no, a hundred times no...

Author didn't want to try a new OS on his device, and instead opted to spend an additional 2.1k on enterprise level devices.

While this did 'fix' it, he wasn't really innovative or creative. Just was willing to spend more money.

A similar example might be, "How I fixed my car" - Bought a new one.

Icedcool··on On Getting Older in Tech
32yr old here. This is interesting to me, coming from times of 28kbps internet where the dude with a huge beard was a tech god.

Reading this and reading the posts, I'm aware of what occurs to be a trade off in young/age, in that young can be cutting edge while old tends to have wisdom/smarter about approach/worldlyness.

Seems shortsighted to think that young is better.

Icedcool··on The unbearable smugness of the press
I am really enjoying pieces like this, of a dose of humility with self inspection in the wake of the Trump election. Call his election what you will, but if I see more humble news reporting, I'll call that at least some positive.

It's blowing my mind.

Icedcool··on Why Do These Straight Men Want Nothing to Do with Women?
I agree with you, in that there seems to be a.... lack of quality role models and certain cultural norms that play into men feeling like they have to be a certain way. Especially a very loud minority of women, who have certain men wanting to live up to those standards... and find themselves miserable as a result.

I think the biggest point of this is that, it is possible to get what you want, and there are others who want that.

And generally that if it is a quality point it is applicable to both genders.

To be happy and get what they want, people need to be clear on what it is they DO want. To have a successful relationship, people need to have good boundaries and know where they are willing to compromise. etc etc...

Women aren't the oppressors... or... whatever else. It is a person's agreement (because they don't know any other options) to be oppressed that is the real oppression. That they limit themselves.
