ID1452319··on Wall Street grudgingly allows remote work as bankers dig in
The problem is that even if everyone DOES come back to the office, you still end up spending your time on Zoom (or Teams in my case) in an office desk, as you inevitably have meetings with colleagues in different offices, countries or outside companies, suppliers and vendors - which negates the whole point.

ID1452319··on Ask HN: What are some technically inspiring movies, TV shows or documentaries?
I know what you mean about The Social Network and Silicon Valley. Not tech specifically, but definitely motivating and inspiring for me are:

Moneyball Margin Call Limitless The Big Short Wolf of Wall Street That Fyre documentary and at Christmas - Trading Places

ID1452319··on Ask HN: What are the problems that are willing to pay more than $1000 to solve?
I notice you mentioned trainers. I was thinking of using the free, publicly available course on sites like edX, coursra etc. and then providing mentors to help and support students. Any thoughts on that?
ID1452319··on Ask HN: What are the problems that are willing to pay more than $1000 to solve?
I really like your idea, it would certainly eliminate the timewasters.
ID1452319··on Ask HN: What are the problems that are willing to pay more than $1000 to solve?
Regarding your "Direct training-to-employment pipeline" I've been thinking about a very similar idea.

Do you think people would actually pay upfront to join on the promise they'll be refunded if they complete the course syllabus successfully?

I have assumed you'd have the offer the course for free and then make your money by placing successful "graduates" with employers who pay a commission for each one.

ID1452319··on How to think strategically in your job
That's actually quite an insightful piece. As it says, “Strategy” is a nebulous concept, but so are many articles about how to think strategically.

I find asking senior people about their vision (no, not their eyesight) is a good way to understand the background and context to many low level decisions.

ID1452319··on U.S. debt default could wipe out 6M jobs and $15T in wealth
As a Brit, can I ask why the US has a debt ceiling, as it seems like when total debt gets close to the ceiling, a vote is passed to raise it - but not before a lot of politician point scoring?
ID1452319··on Ask HN: Am I too cynical for my own good? (question about unicorns)
Sorry, Friday morning ramblings!
ID1452319··on Ask HN: Am I too cynical for my own good? (question about unicorns)
Mark Twain wrote a short story called The Million Pound Bank Note. In it, a shipwrecked sailor is given a bank note worth one million pounds as part of a bet between two rich and eccentric brothers (not Trading Places). The sailor finds that whenever he tries to use the note to buy something, people treat him like a king and let him have whatever he likes for free.

I'd imagine being the founder of a unicorn offers similar perks and opens doors, regardless of how "real" the value is.

ID1452319··on Ask HN: What problem are you close to solving and how can we help?
There is a juxtaposition in the UK job market. We have millions of people working in low-paid precarious jobs in retail, food service, warehousing etc. while simultaneously companies complain that they cannot recruit into highly-paid, skilled roles due to a lack of candidates.

Given that you can study Introduction to Computer Science from Harvard University, online, for free and in your own time, it seems like the barriers to building skills is lower than ever.

However, many people are put off or intimidated by the idea of studying such a course. My solution to this is some kind of mentoring, either 1-to-1 or more likely in small groups. However, this is very resource intensive for my idea to scale. I'd be very interested to hear how others might approach this, both the mentoring or the underlying encouragement to study.

ID1452319··on Why have there been so many own goals at the Euros?
There does seem to be a reluctance by assistant referees to flag very obvious offsides, such as Italy's against Spain, meaning players run off celebrating, while VAR is reviewed and the goal is inevitably disallowed.
ID1452319··on Why have there been so many own goals at the Euros?
I think the reason is because there is more at stake. Take last night for example. The defender busted a gut to get back to try and cut out the cross, even though the chances of doing so were minimal - the end result being he put it into his own net. In a normal league game the defender would likely have just accepted his team's fate and Sterling would have had an easy tap in.

ID1452319··on U.S. Supreme Court revives LinkedIn bid to shield personal data
In this case it would be the US courts. In Britain it would be the ICO who despite claims from companies like hiQ to be GDPR "compliant" they clearly aren't.
ID1452319··on Why America Doesn’t Make Solar Panels Anymore
"Whereas Japan had no solar industry to speak of in 1980, it was producing nearly half the world’s solar panels by 2005."

How does Japan manage to manufacture price competitive products while also maintaining a relatively high standard/cost of living?

ID1452319··on U.S. Supreme Court revives LinkedIn bid to shield personal data
I want some of my LinkedIn profile to be public. I DON'T want any random company scraping that PII data, storing it, processing it and making money from it.

Is that too much to ask?

ID1452319··on 80% of tech could be built outside IT by 2024, thanks to low-code tools
If I had a quid for every time during my 20+years of IT experience I've heard that code-generation, low-code, no-code was about to breakthrough, I'd have a private jet on 24-hour standby.

This bit made to laugh:

"“For instance, machine learning features for helping coding are available. One example is Microsoft’s Intellicode,” Kandaswamy told VentureBeat. “While such tools are in their infancy,"

Intellicode has been around for over a decade in Visual Studio!

ID1452319··on Why workers are calling BS on leaders about returning to the office
I can relate to that. The worst thing about being back in the office (other than it being a complete waste of time as all our meetings are still conducted on Teams) is the temptation to get something to eat from the canteen or vending machines.
ID1452319··on Ask HN: How to Influence People?
I always try to take people on the same journey that I've been on to reach my conclusion. Therefore, don't jump straight to your recommendation. Instead, lay out the options, articulate the pros and cons and then make a recommendation. That way people can understand the background and context of the direction you're trying to influence them in.
ID1452319··on Ask HN: I have no idea how to network in tech. Any tips?
Loads of good tips above. Another is conferences. Due to Covid many have moved online and as a result are now free to attend. You can listen to the talks, but also network with other attendees. This is a good way to strike up conversation and maybe even find potential job opportunities.
ID1452319··on Facebook faces a global backlash over its bid to 'bully' Australia
There is already a technical solution to prevent web pages from being indexed by Google, the noindex tag.

Why not introduce a nosocial tag, then newspapers who don't want their stories shared on social media can simply exclude themselves?

Oh, it isn't about sharing content you say? It's about shaking down Facebook and Google? Hmm.

ID1452319··on A network analysis on cloud gaming: Stadia, GeForce Now and PSNow
I've been playing Stadia since it launched. Now, I'm a casual gamers, I haven't bought hardware since PS2 and play games on my mobile occasionally, but I have been blown away my Stadia. I simply cannot get my head around how it can stream a game, in 4K, to my TV.

I recently purchased Cyberpunk 2077 and was stunned at the amount of complaining about poor graphics, glitches, gameplay etc. as I have experienced none of those.

As for latency and lag, my most popular game to play is PUBG, which is any game should suffer from those issues you'd think it would be a multiplayer, battle royale game like PUBG. But no, other than being very bad at it, I've never experienced what feels like input lag or latency issues.

Sales pitch over!
