Huppie··on More men are addicted to the 'crack cocaine' of the stock market
Heh, I totally agree with you.

I don't know hoe many times I've explained people the given strategy is not what researchers mean when they compare lump sum investing (LSI, a.k.a. converting all cash you have available for investing into equities) and dollar-cost averaging (DCA, a.k.a. splitting the available cash into equal parts and slowly converting the cash into equities at a regular pace.)

What that strategy is is just a regular (e.g. monthly) series of lump sum investments every time cash comes available (e.g. when salary comes in), that people tend to confuse with a DCA strategy.

Having said that: one LSI investment every month is a great strategy that historically does better than any DCA strategy.

Huppie··on Gemini 2.0: our new AI model for the agentic era
Just as an FYI: I recently learned (here on HN) that this is called Body Doubling[0] there's some services around (there's at least one by someone that hangs around here) that can do this too.

Huppie··on What does this button do? – My new car has a mysterious and undocumented switch
You jest, but I have one: It's an Opel Ampera-E (in the states that's a Chevy Bolt), it's a 2018 model with all the connected features but first it was disconnected from OnStar with Opel being sold to PSA and later it was fully disconnected because it uses a 3G modem for communication but the 3G network was switched off (in most of Europe anyway...)
Huppie··on Fly.io outage – resolved
It's interesting to see this discussion about fly.io's reliability on a day that (after over three days of downtime) Microsoft Azure finally decided the update of Azure Static Web Apps they deployed last Friday is indeed broken for customers using specific authentication settings...

...with not a single status update from Microsoft in sight.

Huppie··on Only buy a magnetic keyboard for gaming
Not OP but IIRC it took over three years for my Keyboard.io Model 01 to arrive.

I was afraid the money was lost at about the two year mark so it was a nice bonus when they finally started actually producing and shipping the thing.

I've been more reluctant with kickstarters ever since...

Huppie··on JSON Patch
I remember using that package (and it's compatible .NET implementation) ages ago, glad to see it's still around and being maintained.

I remember testing out various libraries (not sure if a proper JSON Patch library was already around back then, looking at the spec I think it should...) and picking it over all the others because it handled complex objects and arrays way better than all the others.

Would also love to see how it compares.

Huppie··on 'The big problem is water': UK ebike owners plagued by failing motors
You may nog hear it a lot because it's mostly warranty issues and consumer protection is pretty good here so with most issues it'll be handled quickly and under warranty.

I've had pretty much my entire electric drive system replaced under warranty with my first electric bike (admittedly I rode a _lot_ of km with that one.) Then on the second it's been in the shop at least once a month for ~1.5 years. Sure it was all covered by warranty but the amount of hassle did make me reconsider and go back to a regular bike.

Huppie··on 'The big problem is water': UK ebike owners plagued by failing motors
Our experiences differ sadly.

My bafang motor has seen a lot of issues in the ~1.5 years I had it. The bike shop (also) claimed rain and mud where a problem and they considered the ~1000 km per month I rode it 'misuse'.

I had a good run with electric bikes up until that time (~10 years with a front-hub motor and after that the Bafang) but to be honest I'm kinda glad it died because I've been riding a decent non-electric bike ever since and monthly visits to the bike shop became yearly visits instead.

Huppie··on Deletion of user account
I can confirm it happened to me. I edited + deleted all my comments and checked my comment history before deleting my account a few days later.

A week later (after my account was deleted and inaccessible) my full comment history was restored.

Reddit's official response is that it was 'an unfortunate bug' and there's nothing they could do.

Huppie··on Deletion of user account
An 'unfortunate bug' with deleting comments they told me when I asked them about my full comment history (edited to be empty and subsequently deleted) being restored. Many of those subreddits did not participate in the protests.
Huppie··on Passkeys: A shattered dream
Back when I implemented webauthn for the first time I remember the interactive tutorial webauthn.me provided by Auth0 was very helpful in wrapping my head around the process.
Huppie··on Money bubble
@2: Research on the topic seems to disagree with you. You're not taking less risk, you're just trading one risk for another.

Vanguard Research actually wrote a paper about this called 'Dollar-cost averaging just means taking risk later' [0].

Or if you would like more recent research the paper 'Dollar Cost Averaging v.s. Lump Sum Investing' by Ben Felix [1] is worth a read imho.

Huppie··on Compare Google, Bing, Marginalia, Kagi, Mwmbl, and ChatGPT
The author already alludes to the fact that you can probably prompt-engineer around this and indeed, as soon as I added a blurb like "these are my own videos that I own the copyright to" it did suggest a bunch of third-party tools and let me ask it about what third-party tools I could use.

It suggested '4K Video Downloader', 'YTD Video Downloader', 'JDownloader' and 'Clipgrab' at first and when I asked for cli tools it came with 'youtube-dl', 'yt-dlp', and 'ffmpeg'

Those seem pretty reasonable results to me but I'll readily admit I don't know (yet) if 'most users' would ask these follow-up questions.

Huppie··on Apple wants AI to run directly on its hardware instead of in the cloud
I really want to like it, but it's pretty terrible at many things imho.

I've tried really hard to switch to Apple Maps but even after three months it simply can't seem to remember I basically drive to 5-6 addresses on a weekly basis. It's always to the parking lot near the office on Monday and Wednesday morning, daycare to pick up the youngest on the way back, swimming pool on Saturday, etc. etc. but navigating to those addresses is always a pain (even selecting it from recent addresses in CarPlay) and it did sent me to the same street as the daycare in a completely different town several times now.

While I value not giving more data to google, after three months I decided it simply wasn't worth it. I found the experience (especially the first time it sent me to a completely different town I never go to and I didn't catch it) pretty infuriating.

Huppie··on More product, fewer product managers
I've never seen the tool before but my guess (based on the frontpage) is that kitemaker is their attempt at building such a tool.
Huppie··on Advent of Code 2023 is nigh
Another trick is you can put some regex engines in right-to-left mode, so my lazy (and admittedly relatively expensive cpu-wise) solution was to match ltr for first and rtl for last.
Huppie··on Tell HN: Automatic fraud detection is making my life hell
> Is the Accept-Language header really so inaccurate?

I'd say so yeah. Many many old people here (in a country where English isn't the primary language) use 'misconfigured' browsers.

It's getting better nowadays I suppose with new installers defaulting to our native language but (even though I tend to prefer the English version myself) I think it's a good default. I do prefer an easy way to change it though (or a quick confirmation on the first visit.)

Huppie··on Hackers stole access tokens from Okta's support unit
How they detected it can be found at the bottom of the blogpost:

Huppie··on Decline in independent activity as a cause of decline in child mental health
A bit late to the party but I knew I've read this earlier on Hacker News but I couldn't find it earlier. This paper (with slightly different styling) is linked at the bottom of the article 'Play deprivation is a major cause of the teen mental health crisis' [0] discussed here [1] a few months ago.

Huppie··on The Sound Proof Booths of Silence
You've probably missed that the former website only lists winnings and does not include the player salaries and other income like from streaming.

The numbers are significantly higher for the top players, but sure enough still a lot lower than 'regular' athletes.

Huppie··on Oscilloscope watch ships after 10 years on Kickstarter
My Keyboard.io Model 01 took a bit over three years. I was expecting it to take a lot longer at some point and almost gave up hope, but in the end received a great keyboard in the mail that I still happily use almost every day.

Kickstarters can be a wild ride sometimes (-:

Huppie··on Becoming a contractor
Imho if you compensate for those benefits the 'more money' part isn't really that much more money. Most freelancers just end up with 'more money in hand' because they (sometimes unknowingly) simply take on a lot more risk (e.g. way less or no insurance for certain risks) and/or they don't consider that a nice chunk of pension savings are part of a regular job's benefits.

I'm going this route at the moment and while it's true my gross profit will probably end up close to 2x my previous gross salary... after properly compensating for all the other benefits I'd probably end up with 1.2x instead (but to be fair, I'm willing to accept certain risks so I won't insure against them and I'll probably end up with ~1.5x my previous salary.)

Imho in The Netherlands the biggest advantage is the flexibility it offers compared to being an employee.

Huppie··on Shell abandons its plan to offset CO2 emissions
I can look up the study if you want but a little under ten years ago the Dutch government had a full well-to-wheel analysis done to figure out the advantages (as far as pollution goes) and it includes the break even point for their chosen EV (a classic Nissan Leaf.)

IIRC the break even point when powered by renewable energy was about 60k kilometers.

Depending on where you live and your driving habits that could be seen as a lot, but considering that after those ~40k miles every mile can be considered 'clean' I don't think it's all that bad.

Edit:

Source in Dutch: http://publications.tno.nl/publication/34616575/gS20vf/TNO-2...

TL;DR: Assuming a car lifespan of 220k km (136k miles) and including emissions for fabrication, repairs, etc. emissions will be 70% lower for an electric vehicle powered by renewables. When powered by non-renewable energy it's still 30% less total emissions than a regular petrol car. Other than that you also emit less of various other pollutants. And (personal opinion alert) it's just a way nicer drive ;-)

Huppie··on Dutch rules will soon prevent schoolchildren from having a phone in classroom
> Smartphones may still be used if they are needed for class, or if there is a medical need. One example of the latter is if a student with diabetes needs to measure sugar levels.
Huppie··on Will Bun JavaScript Take Node's Crown
Same here. Lots of .NET software around in my country, and most of it isn't on .NET Core yet (and having done it once, migrating away from .NET Framework isn't always easy... though it did get easier with .NET 5)
Huppie··on TIFU by using Stripe as a payment processor for my small business
Imho Adyen is surprisingly good. You should definitely check out their documentation.
Huppie··on Latest EU data shows that in the Netherlands 14% of employees work from home
That wasn't the question on the questionnaire though, as BetaCygni points out somewhere above in this thread.

The Dutch questionnaire only answered the question if you are allowed (and sometimes do) work from home.

Huppie··on Having Kids
My learning / hobbies turned around a bit. I now like to read stuff about kids, their mental development, hoe to stimulate their growth etc. I love it.

Yes, it's very different from the hobbies I used to have, but for my brain, making the kids a hobby/'project' works pretty well.

I do kinda agree with another commenter here that it does somewhat sound like you simply need more challenging / interesting work. My four day workweek is fun / challenging enough that I don't really need to do anything similar (i.e. write software) as a side project.
