HunOL··on Goodbye Visa and Mastercard: 130M Europeans switching to sovereign payment
The title is definitely an over-exaggeration. "Goodbye" will happen when Europeans going abroad no longer need to take Visa or Mastercard cards with them.

What is currently happening is the solving of instant cross-border P2P transfers, which sounds like a very niche problem. Online payments are mostly a solved problem because payment gateways like Adyen or Stripe already support local payment systems.

HunOL··on Removable batteries in smartphones will be mandatory in the EU starting in 2027
All new phones sold in the EU already include information on declared battery life and the number of charge cycles before reaching 80% battery health. The vast majority of phones will meet this requirement.
HunOL··on All phones sold in the EU to have replaceable batteries from 2027
Isn't like most of the new phones claim at least 1000 cycles?
HunOL··on Daily Driving GrapheneOS
> Do you really need access to banking apps on the go?

Yes, I do.

HunOL··on /e/OS is a complete, fully “deGoogled” mobile ecosystem
Yes, but I made an argument about /e/OS and GrapheneOS. You never knows what will work or stop working.
HunOL··on OsmAnd’s Faster Offline Navigation (2025)
Yes, supported, but what is your confidence level in this information?
HunOL··on /e/OS is a complete, fully “deGoogled” mobile ecosystem
I'm currently looking for a new Android phone. I don't like the Pixel and deep integration with Google. I looked at the Fairphone with /e/OS and the Pixel with GrapheneOS, but unfortunately there's no certainty that everything will work or where the boundary is between Google Android and "clean" Android. For example, it turned out that Android Auto is essentially Google Auto and I don't what find out what is dependent on Google. I want something that just works. A phone isn't something I want to tinker with like Linux ten years ago. So basically the choice comes down to Samsung and Chinese brands.
HunOL··on OsmAnd’s Faster Offline Navigation (2025)
> Anyone have any solutions to this?

No solution. I am a big fan of OSM, but modern maps are not about street namesabd building, but about POI. When you go/drive somewhere you are going to store/museum/pharmacy and so on. If this data isn't reliable it's useless. Additional information like phone number, working hours and website is next level which isn't achievable by OSM.

HunOL··on GrapheneOS – Break Free from Google and Apple
It's clearly end user problem who is not able to book a ride. Root cause is on Uber side.
HunOL··on GrapheneOS – Break Free from Google and Apple
It's not breaking free from Google, but pretending it does not affect you. You are still at mercy of app developers and Google which may introduce some changes that will affect you. Additionally you never know what will work or stop working.
HunOL··on Europe's $24T Breakup with Visa and Mastercard Has Begun
But it's not the card. Wero isn't doing anything new. It's just yet one more payment method to implement. Adyen, Stripe, Shopify and many other already support different local payment methods.
HunOL··on Europe's $24T Breakup with Visa and Mastercard Has Begun
It's not about owning credit card, but about being able to use it in physical shop. In one of the parent comments author of comment to which I replied said:

> Why would you expect to be able to use a creditcard in a physical shop in the Netherlands?

And then

> Because this is a thing in most of Europe.

HunOL··on Europe's $24T Breakup with Visa and Mastercard Has Begun
No, in most of the cases government should not be the parent, but external arbiter.
HunOL··on Europe's $24T Breakup with Visa and Mastercard Has Begun
Solve the problem and people will come. I don't see which problem Wero is solving. Cross country p2p money transfers? Not something people do often.
HunOL··on Europe's $24T Breakup with Visa and Mastercard Has Begun
> Because this is a thing in most of Europe.

I think you wastly exegarate your observations.

HunOL··on Europe's $24T Breakup with Visa and Mastercard Has Begun
Very European approach: the winner is chosen by law. Is Wero really a success? According to this article, in 2024 it processed over €7.5 billion.

Polish BLIK, which is not even mentioned in the article and which has joined the EuroPA Alliance, processed €83 billion in 2024, with a 30% y/y increase in H1 2025. I understand that BLIK is much older, but it invested significant effort and money in marketing and promotions while delivering a good user experience. BLIK is now trying to expand to Romania and Slovakia, yet Wero is getting all the hype on Hacker News. Maybe this is a case of East, South, and West Europe being treated differently. Is the only “European” solution one that comes from Western Europe?

HunOL··on Self-hosting my photos with Immich
In the same boat. It seems there is API to export photos, so was thinking about some script that will export photos into separate folder and use hard links in order not to take more space.
HunOL··on Firefox profiles: Private, focused spaces for all the ways you browse
I hope that they will not remove old UI for profiles and do not decide to show old profiles in new UI.
HunOL··on Removing XSLT for a more secure browser
So XPath locators won't be available in Playwright and Selenium in Chrome? This could be huge for QA and RPA.
HunOL··on The Fairphone (Gen. 6)
Disappointed. No USB 3 and no AV1 hardware decoding in phone supposed to last for years?
HunOL··on Trees not profits: we're giving up our right to ever sell Ecosia (2018)
Yes, but opposite of "maximizing profits" does not automatically imply targeting consumer or better product. In this example they state that they interested in maximizing amount of tree they plant. Cool, good for them, but it's not something I'm interested in when using a search engine. After one of Vivaldi's recent updates, I was asked to try Ecosia as my default engine, and I did, but after a few days I went back to Google.
HunOL··on I Switched to Firefox and Never Looked Back
> It’s crazy to think that some software engineers might actually intentionally degrade user experience on non-Google browsers or for people using adblockers.

Pretty sure that was happening back in a days when Opera was using own engine (Presto). They shipped browser with scripts to fix some popular sites. Actually Firefox also has some fixes for particular sites about:compat

HunOL··on Stop Killing Games
No, thank you, I am tired of EU regulations. Vote with your money. Buy games that you could download (GOG) , avoid external launchers and make sure that it's possible to play a game without additional account.
HunOL··on The KDE desktop gets an overhaul with Plasma 6
> The nice thing about KDE is that so much is configurable, but finding configuration settings is still a challenge in Plasma 6. For example, the aforementioned setting to scroll virtual desktops is found in the Desktop Folder Settings application, but not in the System Settings application under the Virtual Desktop settings.

My current Linux installation on desktop is from 2016 and everything was configured years ago. Recently I had to install Linux in Virtualbox and decided to go with KDE. I was overwhelmed with settings not in a good way. Maybe when I was younger I was more enthusiastic and liked it, but now I want reasonable defaults and consistent UI/UX experience.

HunOL··on Ask HN: Nitter officially declared "over" today – alternatives?
Actually in case of Telegram you could open in browser public channels.

Example: https://t.me/s/durov/ https://t.me/s/telegram/

HunOL··on We don't have official RSS feed support for now, but we're working on a solution
I think this thread could good place to share services (self-hosted or paid) that allow to monitor site for changes and make rss/send notification.
HunOL··on Playstation is erasing seasons of Discovery shows from customer libraries
Could give examples?
HunOL··on Snaps. Why? Please Stop
> Or you go with a package manager that is cross-distro. > That’s why.

So flatpak?

HunOL··on Using extra Firefox profiles to make my life better
Profiles and containers probably are the reasons I am still using Firefox.

Profiles are super useful and allow to separate addons, bookmarks and history for different use patterns (normal browsing, dev, NSFW).

HunOL··on Qualcomm has open sourced its aptX and aptX HD encoders
> So headphones from 5 years ago are more useful than modern ones. Modern ones are so bad, if you stop a song you hear the song still playing a bit after you pressed stop.

I have similar observation. 3-5 years ago it was easier to find headphones with that support multiple codecs. Now aptx is kit always supported.
